On low iron you gain weight. It interferes with ones leptin levels especially if you are already overweight or has some type of inflammation. And that has nothing to do with exercising less as most people think.

Hi..I had my first infusion 12 months ago and 4 months later I had lost 2 stone 2lbs.....I put this down to the iron as my body was functioning properly for the first time in a long time.... However...my ferritin level has now dropped back down to 3 and I have gained 21 lbs in 2 and a half months....I teally do not think this is a coincidence.....Been referred for another infusion (whilst waiting for gynae surgery) so Im looking forward to seeing that weight drop back off

When you do not have enough iron in your body, you will develop a number of different symptoms. You may find that your appetite is decreased, which can lead to unexplained weight loss.

I have suffered from iron deficiency for a long time - when I am deficient I gain weight very quickly regardless of exercise or dieting. The more I tighten my diet the more fatigued I become and I suffer sugar cravings when I'm fatigued. Once I get my iron up to normal I feel much better and start exercising again. Unfortunately I've never been able to keep my iron at a normal level for me to lose enough weight,I start to lose weight but I always gain it back once I'm iron deficient again.

I have been fighting low irons for 7 years now. I am now at 3 on my recent blood work. I have had one blood transfusion and 59 iron transfussions.Does anyone else have problems explain to doctors how you feel, and most of the tine you feel like it goes thru one ear out to the other. I can tell most of the time . What level I am at around 60 sometimes I will miss place my keys around the house. 50's might forget a appt I had made a few weeks prior. 40's tingling in feet or hands. 30's somethings make me more nervous then usual. 20's legs start hurting like, I had been running a 5k all day. Under 20's start getting short of breath arm and legs start hurting more and more. Up thru the night more with leg cramps, acid reflux is more on set and arm pain. Feels like more things weigh heavier then they use too.
Teeth chip more . One thing that has help me with the pain is taking ibuprofen more when needed for the pain and adhd meds to help stay focus at all times.
Please let me know if any one else experiences these too.

Iron deficiency can be caused by a few things.

A) You could simply not be consuming enough iron-rich foods.

B) You are consuming other minerals such as copper in excess which throw off your iron levels.

C) You could have a serious underlying condition such as an ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc.

The IV fluids will most likely make you gain weight more than anything and this will be temporary. Most people who have gained weight from iron transfusions have reported eating more due to indigestion, the same thing often happens to some pregnant women with morning sickness, they eat more unhealthy items to quell the nausea. If you have a healthy diet and watch your calories, you should even out, if not lose due to having more energy. If you eat more, you will gain weight. Don't weight yourself for at least a week, IV fluids can make you gain 5-10lbs which is shocking, also watch your sugar on the days you have transfusion as I believe some formulations of iron contain sucrose (sugar), so diabetics may have issues otherwise weight related.
