I am new to this board and am looking for rays of hope. I was in a serious car accident on the weekend and immediately knew my foot was in bad shape and was rushed to the hospital. I was x-rayed and had CT scans and was told that I had a lot of strange things going on in my foot but the biggest problem was the lisfranc fracture and dislocation of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal and the shattered and fragmented 1st metatarsal. I was immediately taken to the OR and from the sounds of the responses on this forum that is a very good thing. The surgeon used 2 screws, no plates and I was out in about 1hr. Luckily I was feeling no pain thanks to a block and I went home around noon the next day. I am totally NWB and will be off for at least 12 weeks (likely up to 6 months apparently) and my main concerns are the long recovery and future pain, arthritis, and required surgeries. I was in a crash though so my pain is everywhere in my body and it takes a long time for soft tissues to heal. This is all very fresh for me so I am hoping for some positive recovery stories or at least some suggestions as to my best course of action to heal fast. My situation will be resolved through insurance and a legal lawsuit due to the fault of the other driver so I am wondering if anyone else in Canada has been though this and can shed some light on what I can expect. I am trying to stay hopeful but as a previously highly energetic and adventurous person, camping, hiking, and cycling, seems very far out of reach and my spirits are dwindling. I just wonder when I will truly smile again and be happy.

First of all I'm so sorry to hear of your accident! And I hope your pain levels arent too bad. I know it seems like a long dark tunnel awaits you and at times it will be hard mentally. It may sound airy fairy but the best thing you can do for yourself is remain positive, and see yourself getting better. PLEASE dont do what I did and trawl through these forums because all you're likely to find is doom and gloom, and it will get you down. Success stories are definately out there but if you think about it, it's those people that are struggling with their injuries that will be the ones to post on these forums. Also, every body and every lis franc injury is different so remember to go on the advice of your surgeon (get a second medical opinion if in doubt) and try not to compare! Yes it is a sh*t injury, but your body wants to heal, and it will! Yep, AWESOME that you got surgery right away or else the body will try to mend what it can, how it can. Whatever you do, do not rush this to heal. I did a beeeautiful job of my lisfranc, (11 screws, 3 plates, a staple and a wire) you can see my blog and xrays here: ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed with links to other lisfranc-ers as well.
I'm currently just over 5 months post injury, and 5 Nov had my second surgery to remove some of the metal. I'm walking quite fine, only a slight limp as foot is getting used to life without its majority of "scaffolding". Not too sore at all only when I do too much, I was even running several steps a couple of weekends ago (but dont rush it!). I just wanted to post this to let you know there is definately hope, but not if you keep reading through these forums! Google footdoc, its a great question/answer forum, really good for any questions you may have but often wont give a straight answer due to the fact that he doesnt have the facts on your own situation. Usually got a reply the next day tho :) Cycling will be FINE as your foot doesnt actually move that much. Apparently in the future it is movements such as an unexpected change in terrain (a rock or slope) that can cause pain. Yes there is the possiblity of arthritis in the future but put this out of your mind and focus on getting better. Take Omega 3, Glucosamine and Chondrotin and don't smoke! All the very best, you will be fine would love to hear how you go :) Take care..

Thank you for your encouraging words and I am so terribly sorry about your injury as well. I have always been a very happy person, cheery and sunny and I just feel that my happiness is being stripped away. I will try to ignore the web world and just focus on my recovery but it's always hard to ignore the tough stories. I have a long way to go and I am praying every day that I will recover 100%. Take care of yourself and I hope that I will have the same successes you are having. All the best.

DONT worry about the internet! (just take anything you see on here with a grain of salt) I can imagine soon it will be your best friend... lol or at least ive definitely nerded up a bunch since my injury. Ive kinda chosen the escapeist rout myself. Buy some books, get a netflix account keep yourself busy! See the difference between what you can and cant change and know the difference. Sorry only god related advice i have to give you. Read the bible? Do anything! And dont let yourself get bored! Cause then you worry and worry and its probably about things you wont know untill the time comes. I just broke a very tricky bone in my foot and didnt have surgery. The doctor said that i would be able to walk on the 27th of last month and would even be back to work all normal within weeks of that. Im still laid up with an aircast and its because thats what my bodies decided to do. No snowboarding this year, bohoo, but im lucky to be alive. So are you? You'll be better when your better. In the mean time use the internet to learn some skills, find funny blogs and follow them, try to make friends in different countries. Learn a new language. Be selfish because your your worst enemy right now. Sure your super spy powers of standard mobility are gone, and your not winning over the pride by challenging the alpha lion. That sucks im not going to lie its an emasculating feeling everytime i open my mouth. BUT, as hopefull thoughts, are hard to come up with some times. A LOT OF TIMES. Humor can always help, when i started freaking out in the first month I would lie in my bed looking out the window and do a maniacle jimmy steward impression from rear window. Remember the little things. I would not have survived if it weren't for ice cream. Ive chosen Ice cream over bread at the gas station because i couldnt carry both with my crutches and back pack. Things will be hard for a long time, so take some time, finally relax. Theres nothing i can see that you could do other than drink milk and eat vitamins for the next months of your injury so at least enjoy it as much as you can. Dont waste this time, it will change the way you think about life, and maybe for the better. Its up to you to be strong for your bones and its not that often they ask for that kind of help.

GOOD LUCK!

hulu's a goot time killer, get into w.o.w or something, i know it sounds terrible but anything that eats time right?

Thanks for the ice cream tip.  We now keep stock in our freezer!  A couple of extra lbs on my bones is ok by me to relax with a bowl of Chocolate.  Anyway, just thought I'd update a bit.  Yesterday I had a screw removed (I have 2) since it was coming out on it's own and I could feel it and was worried about it breaking.  I am very nervous now about the integrity of the joint and I'm wondering if there's anything to worry about.  I had complete fracture, dislocation, a shattered cuneiform, and broken 4th metatarsal.  My doctor was adamant that the screws should never come out but since it was backing out on its own he decided to take it out.  He has not given me much information, he's sort of a robot, so anything I ask him about my injury or what to expect is answered with some cryptic analogy that probably makes sense to him but not anyone else....  I am very worried about re-breaking the joint and am afraid to put any weight on it until the bone fills in.  By the way, the screw was huge.  I can't believe that the little metatarsal could actually sustain that in it.  Just saying.....
