Im 21 years old and I am day 9 post-opp. Before I surgery I had strep throat 5 times in 2 months. My doctor recommended it but I was so scared because I've never had surgery or been hospitalized. I had no idea what this would be like. The surgery was fine but to tell you the truth I don't remember coming home from surgery but I woke up in my bed in the most seering, most incredible pain I have ever been in. It was like I had strep but over 100,000 times worse. I really haven't eaten at all since 12 hours before my surgery but I also haven't been very hungry. I've been drinking a lot of water and I tried to eat a yogurt today and I vomited. It tasted horrible. This is the first day that I have not been in as much pain. But days 2-7 were the absolute longest and worst 5 days of my life. I've never wept so hard or been in that much pain before. I still can't open my mouth all the way and I have to keep sweet oil in my ears, I cannot talk and haven't been able to since day 2 post-opp. My pain medicine was every 4 hours and in between the doses I was miserable. I have lost 30 pounds since last Tuesday and I fear that I will never be able to taste again. I had a fairly high fever for 3 days and I thought I was going to catch pneumonia but I have been extremely congested, coughing and still have ear pain. My incisions kept scabbing and bleeding over and over again. This has been an extremely unpleasant experience but I'm glad that the pain of having strep is behind me. I pray for anyone that has this done.

I'm right there with you. I had my surgery on 6/23/16 and it's very depressing knowing what food is supposed to taste like and what it's actually tasting now. It sort of seems to be getting worse for me. Pizza and anything that has a tomato base is the worst for me. The adjustment is difficult, but I guess it could always be worse. Reading your post reminded me that I should be thankful and hopeful that my taste will one day return.

I have no taste at all apart from sweet and salt but no flavours whatsoever. It is very depressing and now is 11 months since tonsillectomy. I've been told it is very rare but no idea why it occurs. Any help gratefully accepted.

I feel your pain! I had my tonsils out over seven months ago. No sign of taste at all! I'm very frustrated. I've even went back to the surgeon and he says he has never had a patient to loose their taste after a routine tonsillectomy. I don't believe him at all!!

I live in the uk and had my tonsillectomy done 11 years ago. I lost my sense of taste after the operation and sorry to say it has never returned..... I have had a hard job to even get the hospital to admit that there is a link between my operation and my loss of taste. I have recently been in touch with a solicitor to now help me. Life is miserable, and i wish i had never had the operation. I was 50 years old when i had the operation. I dont know if that makes any difference, but i was never told prior to the operation, that losing my sense of taste could be affected.

I had my tonsillectomy in Jan 2016 and have lost all sense of taste apart from salt and sweet. There is NO flavour to anything and I can't even taste toothpaste. I was sent for a brain scan in case I had suffered a slight stroke but it was normal. I have been told it is very rare and no one has any further input. It is a life changing condition and really depressing. They have said it MAY return but I can't see that happening after 12 months. Has anyone got any comments/ help?

The dose of zinc needs to be quite high.Started small 15mg and world up to 80mg daily. Zinc is very important for taste and surgery and the stress of recovery also depletes zinc stores in the body. If you are zinc deficient you are going to struggle getting your taste back. Also take the other 2 supplements mentioned above to help with nerve growth/repair. Our surgeon says he sees one patient a year loose their taste to varying degrees. It so rare they don't bother mentioning it as a potential side effect!!.

Good Morning I have come across this board seeking answers as I just had my tonsillectomy on Jan 26, 2017, I am a 34 year old female and now have lost my taste. I was never told by my ENT that this was even possible, I feel like I was not informed of things that I should have been. I know I am very early in the recovery process I am hoping that my taste will return. This is absolutely miserable, and there is not one family member that understands how frustrating this can be. I am writing to see if anyone on this board has had their taste return since posting. Went to ENT post op day 12 for check up mentioned it to her and she said everything is inflamed from the surgery and is hopeful that taste will return once inflammation is gone, she stated she had a patient that it took a year for taste recovery. Thank you for your time it is greatly appreciated.

I too wasn't told that losing your sense of taste, or having your sense of taste change was part of the recovery process. I had to find out from here :-|

The good news for you is that this is normal :-) The bad news for you is that it is way too soon too tell :-/

In my case, i had slight taste loss in the back of my tongue, and a complete change of taste on the left side of my tongue. It was awful :-( The only thing that tasted good at the time was Cheetos. After about of month and a half after my surgery, I FINALLY noticed that my sense of taste was returning to normal. It was very weird too because it was like all of a sudden. Anyway, it took a full 5 months until I could say my sense of taste was completely back to normal.

Unfortunately, a lot of people in this forum have had their sense of taste ruined permanently because of this surgery, but this seems to be very, very rare. So try not to dwell on it (easier said than done, i know), and find foods that do taste good to you right now so that they can help you through this. You got this :-)

Hi, I had a tonsillectomy 2 months ago. I noticed you had some of the same issues with taste. Did it get better? The horrible dry, metallic taste is driving me insane!

Hi, it took 2 years but my taste did return. It's now been 3 years since my surgery. It's a hard road and I wish you luck!

I had one 5 years ago, lost the sweet taste, but it returned after three or so years. Stay strong, eat healthy so the neurogenesis is possible.
Best of luck

Good afternoon, I would like to keep up with this as much as possible I have been keeping a diary of daily changes, it seems that at day 45 some of my taste has started to return things are very very bland but I can taste onions, garlic, slantro, salsa A1 steak sauce, And steak.. which is super exciting,, I do still get very discouraged everyday as there is still much much more that I get no taste from.. sweets I cannot taste at all.. wether it is time, or prenatal vitamins I am not sure but I am trying everything possible!! On the day of the surgery I also had a lymph node biopsy which left the right side of my head numb, (yes it's still numb) they did a nerve block so it makes me wonder if these two things could possibly be interconnected. My ENT does not think so, and takes this so lightly "oh give it time it will hopefully it will return" yes let's pray it does!! I do I PRAY everyday and do believe that my taste will be restored through GOD if it is his will! He is the reason I have been able to continue moving forward, this is a journey no one can relate to until you yourself go through it, I will be completely honest I took the sense of taste for granted! I have researched so much and come up with not much information, it says maybe zinc is low, or other things that I am just not sure about! I wish I would have been better informed that was a big hurdle for me to get over as well, I like to know everything the good the bad and the ugly,, and I am also a fixer I like to know what I have to do to get things fixed, and this seems like time will be the only answer! Hoping this will give someone HOPE!!
