Hey all!!

It's been 7 months since my tonsils were removed and I wanted to share with you my recovery and my struggles.

Looking back, my recovery went well as I didn't have any complications during surgery, and I didn't have blood clotting problems or hemorrhaging. HOWEVER, I did have lose of/weird taste issues from day 1. I actually didn't think anything of it at first as I thought it was related to the healing of my throat.

At about day 9, I started to question what was really going on. The left side of my tongue seem to taste food normally, but the right side, as well as the back of my tongue, seemed to taste food differently or not at all, and sometimes food would even taste fowl depending on what I was eating. So I looked up the issue online and found a lot of forums, such as this, with people experiencing the same issue(s). Naturally I panicked, especially after reading that some people have never recovered from their tasting symptoms. So I called the surgeon and asked him about my concerns. He told me that it was quite normal, and that I should expect everything to return to normal in about two months. I was kinda peeved that this wasn't explained to me BEFORE going into surgery.

So about a month into my recovery, nothing had changed. I thought at least something would get better by then, especially if I was going to be fully healed by the 2 month mark my surgeon assured me with. So I started taking a daily Zinc vitamin (50mg) as I kept reading everywhere that it helped (hey, I was desperate).

About two months into my recovery, I was eating with my wife, and I ordered something that was my favorite. I totally forgot that it was going to taste weird, but it was too late as I already had ordered. The food comes to our table, and I reluctantly take my first bite thinking it wasn't going to be good. To my pleasant surprise, there was a huge difference! I kid you not, it was like all of a sudden I was better. Now, it wasn't 100%, but it was definitely better than before! I almost cried; I was that happy!

After that turning point, it took 3 more months until my sense of taste went back to completely normal (so 5 months total). I honestly can't tell you if taking the Zinc for the full month I took it helped or not. But I can tell you that it takes time to heal and that you need to stay strong. I have read that it can take up to a year for taste issues to completely go away, so again, hang in there.

If you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them :-)

Im a 33 male and had a tonsillectomy about 2 months ago due to tonsil stones. They were bad and I was picking them out nightly. It was terrible and I had a sore throat non-stop due to them. I finally decided to get them out. I figured it I would be miserable for a couple weeks then everything would be normal.

The first night after surgery I started spitting up blood and felt like I was swallowing blood. A few hours later I got light headed and passed out, and started puking up blood everywhere unconsciously. Ambulance was called and I lost so much blood I was close to dying. Woke up 5 hours later at the hospital. They gave me blood, saline and some drugs and actually felt great. I was released later that day when they knew the bleeding stopped. The next week was rough, but I was taking the pain medicine and could handle eating some foods and was OK.

After about a week my taste completely went to c**p. I couldn't eat because food tasted so bad, like a metallic weird flavor. I had to drink ensure and protein shakes just to down some calories. Finally, at about the 3 week mark I had no pain anymore, but my taste was still horrible and I couldn't eat due to this. I lost about 20 pounds and was depressed.

Slowly, my taste started getting better. Eggs began to taste normal and other foods as well. About a week ago I actually ate a full meal at the 7 week mark. And now I went out to dinner and it wasn't that bad. I think food tastes about 80% normal now with only a mild bad aftertaste. 3 weeks ago I couldn't taste sweets at all, but now I can taste them.

I was so worried about this and read alot of these boards, so I wanted to share my story. Its been a beatdown, I lost 20 pounds during this time, but I dont have to pick those damn smelly stones out of my throat anymore. I've been improving everyday and at this pace I think I will be tasting normally within the next month.

Just letting everyone know to hang in there. There is a chance your taste returns to normal. I didn't even know this would be an issue but I am improving daily.

It's been about a year and a few months for me and no taste. Did your taste disappear immediately after surgery? Mine was there initially then went away two weeks after the surgery

hmm.... i think it was immediately, but at first, just a bad change in taste. i assumed it was the antibiotics or whatever, but it ended up being this other thing. but it all resolved after ages!

I have just read a lot of the replies on this thread and it has not filled me with joy.
Having recently (3 weeks ago) had a tonsillectomy, I was under the impression that my loss of taste, was a direct result of the medication and gargles that I had been prescribed during my recovery.

I am no longer on any of these and still have no taste returned. Can ANYONE, tell of a return of taste? Or is it a case of 'it's not back by now...... It ain't coming back!'?

Like some of the other guys on here, my joy of cooking and dining out has been affected. I find myself over seasoning everything.

Any advise???

You're still in the early stages, so you shouldn't worry yet. My doctor said that it would get better at about the two month mark. I actually started noticing my sense of taste coming back/correcting itself after a month and a half. My sense of taste was completely back to normal after 5 months.

I read that taking zinc helps. I took a capsule (50mg) every day for a month straight. I honestly can't tell you if it helped or not, but I thought I'd mention it.

As for right now, find the foods that taste good. For me, cheesy snacks, like Cheetos, TOTALLY tasted great.

I'm from the UK and had my Tonsillectomy on 18th March 16. The first 11 days were horrendous. I ended up back in hospital for 3 night due to post op bleeding of the throat.

No things are healing and the pain is subsiding, I'm concerned I can't taste anything. I get a bit of taste on the tip of my tongue but after that it's just a nasty, bitter and metallic taste. It's that nasty it completely puts me off my food. My doctor said it could be the antibiotics I was given but I'm concerned it's something more serous. Has anyone's taste come back after their op?

I had my tonsillectomy done on March 7, 2016, and my taste is still off. My tongue also feels like their is a coat of film on it. Will my taste come back?
