I'm going through the same thing. It's been 2 months and I am going crazy with this nasty metallic taste in my mouth. I can't taste anything I am on the brink of going crazy the press is to say the least. I wish I had never gotten my tonsils pool at the age of 47. ~TwiinTammy~

I'm a month short of TWO YEARS after tonsil/uvula removal to remediate snoring. Snoring is pretty much gone, but so is 75% of my taste; steak, chicken, pork,fish--all might as well be tofu. I"m 74 and I think I"m stuck with this.

Be patient and learn to eat for textures and not flavor. It took me two years, but my taste did come back.

Hi I have been posting here since Feb 2017, I am just realizing the metallic taste is gone it took about 4 months, I am 5 and a half months post op. Hang in there it will get better, I did start a diet high in zinc, oyster a half dozen every other week, red meat, pumpkin seeds. Not sure if it was that that actually helped. But I am just now realizing it is gone as I was reading your post.

I am a 50 y/o Female, I had a tonsilectomy on July 8, 2017 I had an extreme amount of pain for nearly 3 weeks. The worst part is that my sense of taste has not returned. I am very depressed about it as I have always enjoyed all types of food. Now I find that I cannot enjoy much of anything. I cannot taste any type of sweets and breads or pizza are just like eating cardboard. The only thing I have found that has any flavor is cucumbers with a little soy sauce. It seems as though nothing can be salted enough. Nor do I want to increase my salt intake. Had I know that this would be the outcome I never would have had the surgery. I was not informed by my doctor that this was a possible complication. It has been life changing for me and not in a good way. I am hoping each day that it will get better but I am very depressed, when I read stories from others. If anyone has found anything that helps please post. I will update if anything should change.

I was in the same boat as you: Extreme pain for the first 3 weeks, and food had no taste or tasted bad (Cheetos were the only thing that i could taste, so I ate that alot, lol).

In my case after about of month and a half after my surgery, I FINALLY noticed that my sense of taste was returning to normal. It was crazy too because it was all of a sudden. It took a full 5 months until I could say my sense of taste was completely back to normal. I've read that it can take up to over a year for some people, but this is rare I think.

Speaking of rare, my doctor too didn't warn me. Apparently though, since this is quite rare, doctors really don't say anything about it. Two of my friends recently had a toncillectomy, and both didn't have problems with their sense of taste during their recovery (lucky bastards).

Unfortunately, when you read all the stories on this board, you'll find more negatively than positivity. Its a tough situation to be in. I don't though that a lot of people write one comment stating their troubles, and they never return again. This is most likely due to the fact that they got their sense of taste back :-) You're still early in your recovery, so hang in there, and try to think positively :-)

I had my tonsillectomy last year 2016 and It was a horrible experience.. I had a massive bleeding after 4 days post op and went straight to the operating theatre. Surgery went well, however, I noticed I can’t taste the food that they were serving. I thought everything was normal as the hospital food usually tasteless. I waited for a couple of days hoping my taste buds will come back, unfortunately, it didn’t happen. I consulted my doctor about my complaint, but he reckoned it was strange that it happen to me. I went into depression and lost 8 kilos. But I didn’t lose hope, I tried to take zinc tablets as some people claiming it will help. I tried to taste every single condiments we have at home and even learning the anatomy of the tongue (taste buds)

Continuation:

I did this for a couple of months, then just one day I was able to taste the cheese burger from McDonalds, it wasn’t strong but at least I can taste it. I continued taking zinc, tasting different condiments and even smelling the food before I eat. Gradually, I noticed the improvements of my taste buds and now on my 8 months post op, I can say that 80% are back. I hope I can give some hope to other people who are still suffering with the same conditions.

Wow, you had been through a lot with your tonsillectomy experience :-/ I'm very happy to hear that your sense of taste is almost completely healed. I'll bet when you realized you could start tasting that burger, you almost cried. I had this same experience with a different food item :-)

Thanks for sharing your story here. It's nice to read a story of someone who was truly tested in their tonsillectomy experience, but the end is in sight for them as their sense of taste is almost completely restored :-) We don't read enough of this here.

I had my surgery on May 31st 2017 and I can't taste food and have been told the longer the taste stays gone the chance of it returning is slim that is what my ENT doctor told me
