I had the IUD after my son was born, 5 1/2 years ago. I was told it was the most effective form of birth control and that it "discouraged" the sperm from planting on the egg. I honestly trusted my OB and didn't think much about it. I had totally normal periods all these years. In fact I had much less cramping and nausia then I did before it. I never noticed anything out of the normal or weird with my periods.
In January I started to be tired and my breast hurt like never before. I had some spotting and thought it was just PMS. Finally the period stopped all together. Needless to say I was pregs.
I started around 15.5 weeks to wake up and feel my stomach contract. I wasn't sure at first what it was because it was such a small part of my stomach. Then I woke up that Tuesday feeling really tired and pain started up my right side. I went and saw my doctor, they thought it was appendicites but sent me in the next day for an ultrasound.
The pain the next day was better by 80% and the baby was fine along with all of the insides of me so they sent me home. That night I couldn't stop vomitting. Sense my White blood cells where so incrediably high my doctor told me it was probably the flue. That night my water broke and I delivered my baby at exactly 16 weeks. It was soo awful. My family doctor was shocked and felt awful, he didn't think it was the IUD but when my husband told him he thought it was the IUD my doctor just looked at him and said I am not telling you to count it out. My OB who did my D&C said he didn't find anything out of the ordinary.
I understand doctors and medicines fail so I am not angry at them, I would though never get another IUD. I hope if you are considering you weigh out your options. I won't go on another birth control. I don't think any form of altering your body to disscourage pregnancy is healthy.
I think at the end of the day, my diagnoses, since it is my body and I know it well, the IUD caused me to go into early labor with contractions and eventually delivery of that tiny life that God gave to me for a very brief time.
If you are having problems with your IUD and you periods or you don't feel or seem right, really consider taking it out. Thanks for your time, hope this helps. jenn

My heart really goes out to you in this story because it sounds like you went through a realy hard time and I'm glad to hear that you are doing well now. I'm glad to know that you're doing well now as well because it must have been hard. Now my question for you is are you and your husband engaging in an alternate form of birth control like say using a condom or the rhythm method instead? Thank you for posting this story.
