Wow! This is the most helpful blog I've read in a long while. I worked out (for myself) some time ago that I had a mild to moderate allergy to sulphur and, hence, sulfites. I also thought I had an allergy to crustaceans but see that these are on your list - I'd never connected them together! There are also a few other things on your list that I know I have a problem with but hadn't connected the dots. Thank you so much! Thank you also for the magnesium tip. I've recently had an extremely itchy rash all over my trunk and some other areas, and a skin specialist told me to stop taking all my supplements - including magnesium. I'm going back onto the magnesium today! As so many of you have said - doctors don't help.

I can also add that I don't seem to have a problem with pumpkin seeds but do with sunflower seeds and sunflower oil - just another thing for some of you to watch out for.

Does anyone else also have a problem with rag weed?

Agree with all of you, great blog. It hit me when reading one of the above with symptoms that I too could have sulfites allergy. Already dairy intolerance, probably cause for leaky gut. Also

These blogs/sites are so helpful and comforting! When I tell people I have this allergy, they think I'm crazy. Thanks for sharing!

I had similar symptoms but not quite as extreme as joint pain, muscle aches, and bloody stools. Mine were more like flu symptoms but like you, I get brain fog, tired, groggy, elevated heart rate, anxiety, sinus headaches, congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, bloated, water weight gain (since this triggers the inflammatory process in my body), itchy and if I eat food with sulfites for more than 4-5 days I will break out into hives.

It's also been about 5 years since I diagnosed myself through the process of an elimination diet. Yep, it's been all about trial and error for me. I have found that organic cashew butter (with no palm oil) is delicious and seems safe for me, pure raw honey is great and I've been trying to find fresh herbs (basil, rosemary, etc.) that don't seem to have been sprayed with sulfites. Tried one farmers market, going to try another... I bought a food dehydrator so I can start to make my own spices, once I find suitable fresh ingredients. I make mayo from avocados and freshly squeezed lemon juice, and use it to make egg or chicken salad.

This has to be the most annoying food allergy known to man! But I'm working my way through it. Good luck to everyone!!!

Wait, brown sugar? Onions & Garlic? Shrimp??? They have sulfites in them???? Ok I've never found those on the lists that I have been given with sulfites listed. What the heck??? I was diagnosed with a sulfite allergy like 10 years ago. I had massive massive headaches and I would break out in hives that would be all over my face, my throat, my chest and start spreading down my torso. I felt like I was on FIRE (and looked it!) and I would be swelling up. And I never realized that some of my other symptoms may be related too... I was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia YEARS ago - as well as IBS. I've had joint and muscle pain for as long as I can remember. As well as nausea and bowel issues, cramping, etc. I have had sinus congestion that is not allergies (had the allergy testing now multiple times - I am not allergic to any outside things like plants or dust or anything like that). I had sinus surgery even to try and clear my airways - no luck. I still have trouble breathing (all the time). I have had skin crawling issues randomly off and on and it's just always unexplained. Just happens sometimes. I also have weird twitching like you know how you get a tic in your eye? And you can't make it stop whatever you do? That happens to me. And it's not just my eye but that is the most common. My brother laughs at me and talks about my twitchy eye. But it will happen in other muscles and I can't make them stop twitching and it drives me nuts.
My heart will sometimes just race for no reason (I don't drink any caffeine - never have - hate coffee and don't do soda). I have very low blood pressure but a fast pulse. And sometimes I just stop moving and start trying to breathe slowly because I feel like my heart is going to come right out of my chest and I don't know why. And sometimes my face will flush and it's like it's on fire and I haven't eaten anything. And no I'm not old enough to get hot flashes! So I cut out the things that I knew had sulfites but no one ever told me about onions, garlic, shrimp, brown sugar and trust me - I eat a lot of those - especially brown sugar!!!! But also the onions and garlic! Damn!

My sulphite allergy became apparent when I connected my occasional wine consumption to next day diharrea, which then progressed to heart palpitations, then chest pains and left arm pain. Multiple ER trips resulted in repeated misdiagnosis of anxiety - which I KNEW I did not have. Finally the "allergy bucket" overflowed just before my first covid vaccine when I was reacting to seemingly everything - I connected the dots after consuming hard cider for the first time, my voice went hoarse and I got extreme chest distress. Then the vaccine caused the same issues within 10 mins, plus stiff face muscles. The reactine I wrongly took to combat all these sudden "allergy" symptoms only exaggerated the symptoms. More research showed me that I was also reacting to PEG - polyethylene glycol (vaccine stabilizer) also found in reactine, and literally every allergy medication on the shelf except liquid benadryl only and Claritin! Even regular benadryl has PEG. I was trying to combat what I thought was swelling vocal chords, but was actually constricting muscles - I removed all sulphites from my diet as much as possible, avoid all PEG products (SO many! Crest toothpaste... just so many) and started taking Quercitin (naturopath recommended) and was able to build up my system enough to get my 2nd vaccine incident free! I am now an insta-rmeter for sulphite detection- hoarse voice e within moments of consumption. Grateful to FINALLY know! Anxiety my foot! Doctors, educate yourselves. Absence of diagnosis should not default to a diagnosis of anxiety.

I'm so sorry for your experience, but I'm also so happy you shared it here. I've been dealing with almost identical symptoms, especially the diaphragm cramping and the bit you mentioned about the ATP. I had been told it was all in my head before, and I was getting discouraged after doctors had no clue as to why my joints felt like they were being suffocated, I was SO itchy, even on my the soles of my feet. I was writhing around in pain, and my diagram and liver hurt too. Drs chalked it up to gallstones even though they can never see any of Ultrasounds

Is there a best form of magnesium for this?

While this is an add on to an old post, I thought others may wander across this. Recently figured out my son cannot have added sulfites to food (okay with naturally occurring sulfur in moderate doses). He also presented with disabling fibromyalgia and IBS. What I learned is that he has a genetic phenotype that led to improper sulfur processing in the body (CBS and SUOX genes, also issues with MTHFR and MTRR feed into that imbalance). In addition to magnesium to transform sulfur, molybdenum is very import to help clear excess sulfur products from the body. I give him 25mcg every three days. While we are at the beginning of the healing journey, I can say that molybdenum was helpful in recovery.

I agree with, and understand, you ......totally! I have had the same nasty experiences especially the very scary 'round the body' dreadful pain and also bringing up phlegm etc. - I thought I was bordering on a heart attack! Was assured my heart x-ray was fine. No diagnosis. I self-diagnosed on the 'sharing of jelly two Sundays in a row with my husband'. That resulted in tongue swelling, the usual anaphylactic symptoms I often suffer, treated with prednisone etc., I then found gelatine was a 'sulphite', knew my reaction to msg (nasty experience) and your other reactions and went exploring! Now solved. Thank you SO much and thank you to this site for keeping your information here. I have your list printed for reference! Avoid wasps!!!
