I am a mother of a 5 years old daughter. She goes to kindergarten and often gets sick there. Sometimes I give her antibiotics, but sometimes just paracetamol syrup. I am interested in mechanism of action of amoxicillin. Because it is about my child, I am worried if it may be harmful.

Amoxicilin is an antibiotic, belongs to group of bacteriostatics. It doesn’t kill bacteria, just stops their multiplying. Amoxicillin is effective against Escherichia coli, which often causes urinary infections. It is also used against Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococci and Staphylococci. You should give antibiotics to your child only when doctor prescribes. They are helpful, but just if used properly.
