I know that meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, membranes that cover brain and spinal cord. I have heard that many of the bacteria or viruses that can cause meningitis, and are common and are more often associated with other everyday illnesses. What worried me is that is possible for those to be sometimes spread to the meninges from an infection in another part of the body. That is why I am worried about my child, who has infections quite commonly. Can you tell me some symptoms of meningitis?

The symptoms of meningitis usually vary and may depend on the age of the child. Symptoms are different and when are caused by different bacterium or virus. The symptoms of viral meningitis are usually milder than symptoms of bacterial meningitis. However, symptoms of bacterial and viral cases can be similar, particularly in early stages. This makes prompt, accurate identification of the infectious organism crucial to effective treatment and patient's recovery. The first symptoms of meningitis may surface several days after a child has had a cold and runny nose, diarrhea and vomiting. There could be presented and some other signs of a bacterial or viral infection. Some of the more common symptoms of meningitis include fever, lethargy, or irritability. Older children may complain of a headache, photophobia, and a stiff neck. This is often noted by the doctor during a physical exam. Meningitis also can lead to skin rashes, although rashes caused by bacterial meningitis look different from rash caused by viral meningitis.
