Methadone & Effects on Sexual Function

I don't know how old your hubby is But im a Veteran of the US Navy and probably older than him and my drive has decreased but once my wife and I get our alone time, But with pressure and family bs im not surprised because that's a side effect. The doctor might want to rx Viagra.. I don't need it because im not human. I have more problems than I care to admit But I had a higher drive before I took the pills . If I took a Viagra look out.....she would run...everyone has there own needs and desires. perhaps another opinion would be in order.

I understand mine is doing the same thing...I've been told it's a side effect but I don't know if it goes away or not.. I hope it does,I'm going crazy

I been on methadone for 9 years and have had problems getting and keeping an erection. also when I did have erection it depended on the time of day of i could get off. I always dose in the morning and if I waited at least 12 hours after I would have better success. One thing that has made a major difference is being on testosterone with viagra or cialis. When I timed it up right it was great. I had strong erection confident was able to control when I ejaculate it has helped a lot it had also helped lowering my dose. I was on 100 down to 40 that made a big difference too.

I have been with my boyfriend for 5 yrs. I never knew he had a drug problem in the beginning. We separated for a year when I found it all out, he actually left me when that happened. He started treatment so I gave him a chance because treatment is suppose to be a good start. But, WOW- I had no idea "treatment" would be worse then pills. When he took pills before I no idea, aside from long mid day naps, sadly he hid it well. But, on Methadone he is a different person all together, he is like a Zombie all day, constantly dozing off mid conversation, non-emotional, basically numb all the time. He lies all the time too, like he covers up for his treatment as if it were just like any-other drug. So we have a ton of issues including trust. The worst issue is the Non existent sex life. We have been back together for 2 years now, we have had sex only 7-8 times. And every-time it's like he forces himself. I have lost interest in him. I am 29, he was amazing in bed before but now there is nothing-- no spark, no drive, nothing. I am so depressed, I go though the whole emotional issue myself, of questioning my looks, my body, ect. Even though I know it's the methadone. I love this person, or the person he was before, but I only get small glimpses of his personality now. I bought him Vitadone with hopes that he would get better, but checked the 2 month old bottle today to find all the pills in it! So again he lies as if he is a drug abuser rather than someone in treatment. He told me 2 wks ago he is lowering his dose and for me to be patient with him; I think he is lying about that too. He always has some crazy excuse why I can't talk with his doc or counselor when he goes, or he says he only see his doc every few months. The crazy part is I am a Nurse!! I understand drug abuse, and sadly have watch family suffer though it, I know it comes first, nothing else matters to an addict. I hoped this would be a 1-3 year treatment but I am realizing people stay on this for 10 plus years. I don't have kids!! I want kids. I am so torn, I am scared that if I leave him he will relapse and it would be my fault but I am so unhappy. It is awful to love someone so much but I think I have to end it. I had a parent in and out of prison because of drugs, I suffered as a child because of it, so if by some crazy odds we managed to get pregnant I can't stand the idea of what life they might have to live. He picks up my dog and falls asleep while carrying her and I freak out because I know he could drop her....Methadone is a nightmare. All these prescribed opiates are from hell and I can't wait til Marijuana is legal in hopes that they might use it as treatment instead, but I can't live on hope and I don't think I can wait anymore. I am drowning.

Hello,I am also in a methadone clinic.and just like your husband I am also going thru the same problem.i have been taking it for almost 2 years now.and all a sudden I just can't get it up.its so embarrassing. Is there anything I can do about this? I went to my Dr and she got me a script for viagra.when I stop taking the methadone will this problem go away and things will come back and be normal again? Please I need help on this issue

Hi my boyfriend also has this issue and me being the sexual creature I am it hurts that our sex life is lacking and to no fault of our own.. When dealing with this the best and most important thing is communication and showing support. I don't doubt for one second that my boyfriend isn't in love with me or not attracted to me. Be open with him and let him know what it is doing to you and if he loves you he will make the effort to work on finding a solution to the problem. There are many different things that can be done and it's all about what works for the two of you. Trial and error is key as is patience because what might work for one person may not work for another. Get him to go to the doctor and rule out any other medical conditions that could be causing it and also research some natural remedies that can help. He just started trying maca root which has numerous health benefits. Anyway try and keep your head up and know it's not you, try not to take it personal even though I know this is difficult. that is a common side effect of MMT just be grateful he can get it up. Hopefully this helps and with some time effort and patience you two should be able to come to a solution that works best for you.

No,first of all in 90% of cases it does not stop on its own.The only thing that happens when your body gets used to methadone is you no longer get "high" or for a better word sedated from it.methadone severely shuts down testosterone production in men.I can tell you thru knowledge of biology as well as personal experience.I have been on mmt (methadone treatment) going on 2 years.I'm 33 year old, semi pro athlete and soon after starting treatments I started gaining weight which I could never do no matter how I tried.then my interest in sex was crashing where I could care less.With 3 years working as an RMA in urology I immediately recognized the symptoms of low testosterone.I spoke to my Dr at the clinic and was told surprise! I have to sleek with my General doctor,on my own and he would not even order blood labs to check my testosterone.after going to family Dr and explaining all above,she order the test.a man my age has testosterone from about 400-1200 range.my testosterone was 87. Less than produced in woman.I was referred to a urologist for testosterone replacement therapy and my sex drive has come back saving my marriage and I even last the weight again.Every man I talked to at clinic has these same symptoms but are usually embarrassed to talk about it.so i tell them what happened to me.it is the methadone,and it's true the Dr at clinic will send you away to your own doctor for ANYTHING other than wanting to change your methadone dose.so from my personal experience,get testosterone checked! I know this is old post but I had the problem for a year before I was treated so. Anyone else reading this know that this is normal side effect for men on methadone.

I am going thru the exact thing. My husband has been on it for a year and the mood swings as well are really bad. Some days I break down and cry and other days I want to smack the c**p out of him. I hope we find answers soon or I'm gonna have to move on some where else. After 19 years I hate to leave him but I can only take so much

tell your partner to get testosterone shots , it may or may not help .. in my case it helped but im starting to have my little problem again ,
its not only embarrassing but its also very depressing, so with that said , to add your partner leaving to the list of BS , you become to feel worthless and other thoughts start to come into play.
Would you rather have a partner addicted to drugs who can get a hard penis but possibly die from a overdose , or would ya rather have someone whos getting the help with a few sex issues who eventually will get over all of the problems and be a normal person?
i dont mean to sound like an ass hole but when you go from having a solid hard penis and a killer sex life to getting on methadone and not only do ya have a half hard penis or complete limp penis and half the time ya cant cum to having your partner either leave you or worse have a affair ?

buy a toy , get him to do other things to you to help you sexually , i bet with some time with his tounge and hand and a toy will do the job just fine ... dont leave the guy or cheat .

I was just reading ur issue and we r both on methadone but it seems to make a man's sex drive as u said 0%. I am a woman with a man that had 0% sex drive and we were a newer relationship. I have never experienced this problem at all. It was very new to me as well as him... I stood by him and one day he totally changed into wanting it everyday. This lasted for a good couple months. Now we still r ok, but every now n then he can't stay erect... I love him and try to understand and help. He feels bad and feels like he let me down. Which u gotta support ur man if u love him. He needs that or he won't get better. He will think more bad about himself and a woman that cares will be supportive rather then mad, rude, or plain inconsiderate. I was thinking is if me for awhile, he kept saying no no don't think that and it did up until I talked to a lot of men on methadone. He's also 38. Smokes , already has low self esteem from previous females that did him wrong. U both gotta be supportive. It's not his fault. I hope all is well.

Dude I feel the exact same, while on heroin I would have no problem getting it up and I would last for hours. But now on methadone I have no sexual desire, it's extremely hard to get it up
