My boyfriend went to a dr to get off heroin, the dr started him on only 15mg of methadone and it didnt even put a dent in it. well a few days later we came back and i went with, the dr put him on 40mg which my bf feels he might need to be on 50mg for a month or so then slowly go down once he has some clean time. the dr was talking about being on the 40mg for a month then a rapid detox. i really want my b/f to be comfortable because he is trying super hard to get clean. i dont want this to cause him to get sick and relapse. we are paying this dr 100 bucks every visit i dont know why he wont work with us. if we go back and my bf asks to be on 50 mg for a month do you think he would be willing to do that? its hard becuase we have to pay 100 bucks to even talk to this guy or get ANY answers. i am having a hard time finding another private methadone dr. i would like to see my bf on a comfortable dose, not pay for his services then be screwed. anyone have some experience with this, how we can talk to this dr to get him to understand we want my bf to recover and succeed.

Can the doctor put him on suboxone instead? If you think the pain from heroin withdrawal is bad, withdrawal from methadone is 1000x worse. I've done it about 10 years back and did a rapid detox off of 17mg of methadone - maybe the rules are different now about what the minimum dose is before you can do a rapid detox - but anyway - the rapid detox was fine - it's just that it will take months to feel normal energy levels again and I probably should have been on anti-depressants - my boyfriend at that time did the rapid too - we lived together - and he just ended up taking loads of amphetamines which wasn't the greatest.
Look, everyone handles stuff differently and your boyfriend is very lucky to have you caring for him, but I would definitely look into changing over to suboxone instead - if the 40mg of methadone isn't holding him, then if he does get on to suboxone - he might have a few days of discomfort, but seriously, it's so worth it. Speak to anyone who's ever been on methadone and actually managed to get off it and they would never wish methadone on their worst enemy.
I really hope the doctor does what you want him to and i hope what i've said hasn't scared you. Feel free to email me and i'll happily respond. It frustrates me to hear about pig headed doctors so flippantly making decisions that make such an huge impact on peoples lives.
