Hello! My sister who is only 16 years old has been diagnosed with mitro valve prolapse. Is her age normal for this condition to develop? Who has the predispositions for mitro valve prolapse? Is this syndrome heredity? Thank you!

Hi there! Mitral valve prolapse is the most common cardiac problem and affects five to twenty percent of the population. The syndrome is more common in women, but men get be affected too. With MVP, symptoms do not begin before the early teenage years (approximately age 14 in girls and 15 in boys), but adults of any age may be affected. MVP tends to run in families, so those with blood relatives with MVP have a greater chance of also having the condition. Has any of your ancestors had the condition before?
