I cannot believe it took me 8 months to put this together!  I don't actually feel like I'm gaining weight, but I'm sure not losing any!  I go to the gym 4 times per week for 90 minutes each time.  I work my tail off.  But, I look like I'm pregnant too!  All of a sudden I have belly fat that I've never had before...I feel deformed!  This is so frustrating!  I will call my doc asap and see what I can do to remedy this!  I knew something was wrong --- however, is it totally necessary considering my Hashimoto syndrome?

I have been on Synthroid for just over a year and have gained 26 lbs. I go to about 8-9 hours of dance class a week including zumba. My eating habits are the same as they have always been. When I bring this issue up with my doctor they just blow me off and say my TSH levels are normal on 100mcg of Synthroid. So they seem to think all is right with the world as long as TSH is normal.

I too was told that the weight gain and the under eye bags were not the result of the synthroid. Then did a quasi-scientific experiment. I went off the synthroid for a week.  The bags under my eyes went away and I lost 4 lbs. Then I went back on the synthroid for a week. The bags under my eyes returned and I gained 3 lbs in 3 days. Synthroid most definitely causes weight gain for me!

I too have gained 20# since being put on synthroid. At first I felt great, but the last 6 months has been difficult. I haven't had the energy to exercise and have muscle pains and weakness and so many other symptoms to list. They are all the side effedts of being on this drug.  By the way, my thy. levels - TSH, T4 n T3 are all normal. I want to try a more natural approach, possibly Amour Thyroid. I wish now I did not have the radiation treatment and stayed hyperthroid. They made it sound like there were so many dangers to staying hyperthyroid that the radiation treatment would help. Well, I am feeling worse and I think it is the synthyroid medication. I am planning on seeing doctor very soon and demand something else. It has to be worth a try.

You will be able to notice a change overtime. You have to take it religiously every damn day as you can not skip any dosage. I lost the bloating problem in 2 weeks but I am 29 with my thyroid problem since I was born (hereditary). Avoid sodium big time.

Hi, A few months ago I was here seeking advice on Hypothyroidism, and I started with 50mcg of Synthroid, I have since gotten up to 125mcg, by the way I currently feel I think I will be up to 150 soon. So far I'm doing a lot better than what I was before synthroid, to avoid any weight gain I really cleaned up my diet by cooking at home and eating more fruit, veggis, stir-fry’s, chilli and chicken breasts. I cut out all snacks, bread and as many carbohydrates as I can. What it comes down to is I changed the way I think about food, I no longer eat for enjoyment I eat for sustenance, and I have lost 15 pounds and I hope to continue loosing.

For those who are saying that they continue to gain weight even though they are eating like they always have, my advice is take a really close look at what and when you are eating, as your body changes your diet should too. Check the labels for calories, carbs and sodium and make changes to your diet. Many of my family members close and distant relatives have had Hypothyroidism for decades and have been on Synthroid the whole time and many of them do not have problems with weight gain.

My doctor suggested the other day that if I need go up to 150mcg I should consider switching from Synthetic to the natural hormone pills, and I figure that I have nothing to lose by trying.

Hi. I know I am late in responding (4 months late) but I hope things worked out for you with the Endocrin. doc. Let us know what happened. I havent taken any meds since I posted here 4 mnths ago. I lost my insurance, so I have no clue what my levels are....(sorry for bad grammar and typing but I am so pissed with this $hyt that I could scream). I never cuss, but this has help turn me into a different person. If you are reading this, anyone, please say a prayer for me as this is affecting my marriage and household. I feel impatient with people and "lazy".... Sorry about the language, but I am tired.....

Do some careful research on foods with iodine and animal thyroid glands . Hope this helps. It changed my levels, but NOT my symptoms.
