I gained 7 pounds within 3 months after getting on Synthroid. I've been seriously considering just weaning myself off of it altogether. I don't feel that the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Yes! I've been on synthroid 25 mcg for about 8 months and have gained about 25 lbs. of pure fat. No matter what I try I can't lose the weight. I'm seriously thinking about NOT taking the synthroid, I also have heart problems and I know the weight is not good for my heart.

I have been on 50 mg Synthroid since July this year and now in November I gained 12 pounds, no matter how little I eat, and I exercise 3x a week, moderately, but never changed my eating habits. Doctors claim it can not be the synthroid. My levels are now 2.5, ideal, however they said keep taking the synthroid. I stopped taking it anyway, as I had also for the first time in my life since on syntrhoid high liver levels! I do not even drink

I am not taking anything for 4 weeks will have my blood test redone and then go from there. Read online about he benefits of apple cider vinegar and raw honey, will try that for healthy weightloss, and hope it will get my metabolism going, main reasons I thought synthroid would help.

I am also disturbed that Synthroid is supposed to be such wonder drug per the doctors yet you can also not take anything herbal or any diet aids, not even raspberry ketones!

All I know since taking synthroid, I do not feel better, no more energry, still cold all the time, nails got even more brittle and the weight gain! Very frustrating.

Good luck to everyone here

This is aweful, so many of us out here with the same issue , yet no doctor is helping. I did wean myself off and am off now for about 2 weeks, no more added weight gain, but also no loss, am not feeling any different, just very frustrated of having gained this weight!

If this post is still active....I would love to know what to do. Just started on Synthroid (generic form) one month ago and have gained 6 lbs. and still very tired and sluggish. I tried for several years to avoid going on the synthetic hormone using supplements but had to give in. Now very upset and not knowing what to do.

I just started on 75 mcg of generic Synthroid and gained 6 lbs in the one month I have been on it. I am considering going off it since still tired and sluggish as well. But then what? I tried natural supplements for years..nothing works.

I haven't posted yet, just ran over to my computer to do a little research before my dr appointment. I go to the gym EVERYDAY, use a standing desk at work with an elliptical to run on between projects and on average eat less than 1000 calories a day. Perhaps you should put the computer down and go run into traffic.

Hi I do not understand why the doctors always stress not to stop taking it ? I am on 50 mg and stopped a month ago but I have to say I still have my thyroid and no other health problems but I gained 15 pounds now since July no change in eating etc just taking synthroid by liver levels since taking synthroid doubled !!! After I stopped synthroidy liver levels went back to normal I sleep better and my metabolism is a bit better. I now looked into taking thyroid pills from Gaia it's herbal you can get it from amazon and read very interesting reviews on it. For my personal circumstances it's worth a try I do regularly have my blood and bloodpressure checked It is so frustrating reading about sooooo many side affects with synthroid but the doctors just don't want to listen ?????

Amazing that you would take the time to post here as you post is not only offending but of no value to the discussion All u did was talk bout how much of a superwomen /guy you pretend to be with an elliptical under your desk omg ? ! Yet you did not contribute any value in discussion about synthroid

I have the same problem with synthroid.ive been on it over a year and keep gaining weight. I'm very frustrated because I eat very little. I considered just stop taking it but heard that could be dangerous. I don't want to gain any more weight from this but don't know what to do. If you hear of anything please let me know.

I am also on synthroid, my Dr. advised me not to take the generic form (said it was not as effective). I have also gained weight, but more uncomfortable is a bloated feeling in my stomach. I cannot stop taking synthroid because I do feel much better. My skin has improved 100%,
it was so dry I was miserable. My recent blood test says that my thyroid is now in normal limits and my Dr. says weight gain is NOT due to the synthroid but, I know it has.

Synthroid increases one's Basal Metabolic Rate. If started on it (assuming correct dose) and you continue to eat the same as you had before, and your levels normalize, by logic you should see a reducation in weight.

I am seeing on many threads that synthroid for euthyroid patients doesn't cause weight loss. That is false. It will and logically so.  It is not safe, however, for a euthyroid "normal" patients to take it for weight loss only.

Wow, I googled to see if my medication could cause weight gain. Since I have been on Synthroid I have gained 8 pounds a month, going on 3 months now. I feel bloated, hair loss, emotional, and have started my period after not having one for two years. I have had enough and I am going off it. I started on 50 and now I am on 88.

I am very interested. I was very thin when diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis about 4 years ago. I was prescribed 75 mcg. Synthroid 6 days a week, and I've been gaining weight continually since then. No matter what I do, I cannot lose a pound. As of 1/1/14 I went GF, and almost completely sugar free in an attempt to heal my thyroid. I've only eaten about a half dozen sugar containing items so far this year. I walk fast 4 miles a day 5-6 days a week. I have a very healthy breakfast smoothie made with raw plant protein powder, water, almonds, and banana, either a green veggie/fruit juice with a few pumkin seeds or green salad for lunch, regular dinner, apple snack. I began backing off the Synthroid a couple of weeks ago, am now down to a quarter of 75 mcg., not eating any of the goitergyn foods, expecting to lose weight...instead I gained 3 pounds! I'm ready to freak!!!!! I have no clue what I'm doing wrong or what the heck to do!!! I thought the Synthroid was making me gain weight by causing my metabolism to be sluggish, but now I'm having visions of my mother who never took Synthroid for her thyroid problem, and was always overweight! However, she never ate healthy, and didn't exercise......
