I started taking 50 mgs of Synthroid a few months ago.
My weight soared 30 lbs in about a month. Went to Doctor and told them what was happening and this was not acceptable and they said my dose was too light, so the increased it to 75mgs. My weight stopped gaining and seemed to level off, but was still way over weight, so got back to Doctor and now they are gonna raise my does to 100mgs, with hope the weight gain will start to back off and lose a few pounds.
Will see what happens.

Im 43 and started having problems with my throids. supposively, I was having some tachycardia and what seemed to be seizures. The endroconolgist radiated my thryiods a few times. and put me on synthroid. but since ive gained 30 pounds. although my dose is 88mg of synthroids daily, and my levels are finally level, I cant lose the weight. I am extremely actiive. I eat healthy and drink alot of water.  I Work out side alot  fixing roofs , Pipes , Motors and anything else that needs to be fixed but i feel so sluggish. Im tempted to stop taking the synthroid all together just to see the outcome, I already have heart problems but its due to all the radiation. All i know is i must get this weight off im so miserable. All this extra weight makes it hard to conduct a normal life, I am the sole caretaker of a disabled young lady and since my father died i take care of and maintain 2 households. Im just angry , I know the synthroid medication has alot to do with my weight gain. but cant prove it unless i go off them.

From my experience it is the meds, whether levothyroxine or synthroid.  I pleaded with my doctor to take me off the levothyroxine and put me on synthroid because of the side effects worsening, in the 3 weeks of the levothyroxine leaving my body i lost 2 inches from my stomach and waist.  All  my belly fat was just about gone and as soon as the synthroid was in my body for about 3 weeks the belly fat started coming back and just keeps on coming.

I'm 5' and have been a health nut all my life, work out every day for 2 hours and still can't get rid of it. The rest of my body is lean and muscular but my stomach makes me look pregnant and at 50 that's not happening.   I'm now looking for another doctor that will put me on a natural thyroid medication since my current one is refusing to even look at the research I've done on it.  I'm currently on 1.12mg of synthroid, it seems the higher my dosage gets the more weight I gain.  Do not believe anything you hear about people losing weight on the meds, I have never met anyone who has.

Im still on 88mg of synthroid , My cardiologist keeps telling me I need to lose weight. that fat is accumulating around my liver. Ive been at 169lbs now for around 6 months. Ive never weighed more then 148 at the most.. Im so discussed, im not sure what to do anymore. I really need to lose, Ive pushed my body to the max as far as work outs. and I barely eat maybe three extremely small meals a day, I mean really small ,I have tachycardia and am now taking enough meds to kill a large beast. All started from Thryoids. ,,, Im just now sure what to do anymore, any suggestions. ????

My doctor put me on synthroid when my thyroid levels were only marginally raised, and I gained 25 lbs FAST. I was miserable. I also felt depressed (maybe from weight gain?) and my throat felt closed all the time, I was tired and just didn't feel good. Never have I had any problems before this. My doctor said I was nearing 50 and THAT was my problem!! She said I needed to give it a chance and that it was the best on the market; but when I insisted that we change medications, I actually ended up NOT taking the new one... and within two months started losing weight and feeling so much better. She does not know that I am not taking any thyroid meds. Just a month ago she tested my thyroid "on this new medication" and guess what --- my thyroid is perfect!!! HA!!! I have lost the 25 lbs and feel awesome not being on any medication. Just be very informed if you have to take any thyroid medication ... my doctor did not give me the best advice.

The same thing happened to me. My doctor told me I should be losing weight. I improve my eating habits and started exercising more but, I gained a total of 13 pounds in two months.

It's definitely the Synthroid. Been on levothyroxine for 18 yrs and did fine -he changed me to Synthroid and gained 7 pounds in 2 weeks. Doc didn't believe me. Agreed to put me back on levo and dropped the weight. I ran out of meds and so used a couple days of leftover Synthroid....guess what? Put on 3 pounds in a few days!!!

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm on 50 mg and I've bloated out and all the fat has accumulated in my thighs. I'm usually very fit and I am discouraged to the point of taking myself off synthroid. Nothing else has changed.

What is the answer. I would very much like to know. I'm very self conscious about my weight gain. At first 2 yrs ago I lost over 29lbs in less than 2 months. They said it was my thyroid. But now I've gained over 20lbs in 2 yrs 10 of those lbs being in last 3 months!!
