Hi everyone I am new to this so bare with me
My husband had a partial colonectmy on Dec 18th and on the 21st the doctor said it looked infected so he removed the staples and opened it back up. No additional surgery was performed, just cleaning and packing the wound. On the 24th they sent him home with the open wound. It is 5 inches long by 3 inches wide and 3 inches deep. A home nurse came om Christmas and showed me how to clean and pack it, then came again the nect day to watch me change his bandage. He seems to be getting worse pain each day though, but his incision looks clean and healthy.
Has anyone else ever heard of a doctor semding home a patient with an open wound like this after surgery?????? I have yet been able to reach his surgeon since the 18th only her associates and they all say it is fine
I really need some input here. PLEASE HELP thanks

My wife had the same procedure and went home with the same situation just a smaller wound 2" L X 1" W X 2" D. Dr. says it will take 10 to 30 days to heal and maybe longer.
Healing from surgery is going slow but the wound seems to be doing OK at day 12. I pack it 2 to 3 times per day and there isn't much pain at all experienced due to packing according to my wife.

I am home with an open wound for a week and 5 days. I have a vac pump to get all the liquid out and am stuffed with sponges. Until the doctor prescribed liquid lidocainse last week, it was the worst pain of my life. Same story as about. Infection under the stables, removed them, yellow icky coating on the inside of the incision. The nurse comes 2 times a week and I go to the wound ccenter to see my doc on fridays. Every time I see it before the put in the new sponges, I seriously think about becoming a vegitarian. I feel like the 2 of you are very lucky because it's predicted it will take 2-6 months to be able to lose the vac pack. God bless you in your healing. I feel good knowing I am not alone. Thank you.

They told me the wound vac would become my new best friend (I hated it the whole time). I loved the fact that it heald me quicker by promoting a healing environment. I had to use the wound vac just over 9 weeks. I started on the wound vac with the gray sponge which was very painful to remove and very uncomfortable while in wound. My doctor swiched me to the white foam which is much softer and thiner than the gray foam...........what a difference. I no longer cried when they changed my wound. I am now back to work and doing great...........it feels good to feel good!
