A 70-year old with an arthitic hip suffered osteomyelitis in the hip socket, reducing the length of her leg bone by 2". The doctors said that the osteomyelitis was caused by an e-coli infection, which they treated with 6 weeks of infused antibiotics. They never figured out where the e-coli infection had come from. Looked at urinary tract for possible blockage but that was inconclusive. Someone suggested diverticulosis as a possible cause.

Searching the internet it looks as if a urinary tract infection, diverticulosis, or ingested food might be causes.

What's the likelihood of a recurrence of the e-coli infection, or what should I be most concerned about in terms of avoiding a recurrence.
