I am at the end of my rope. 20 years ago I would get an UTI and the doc said is was "honeymoon syndrome". So after sex I had the whole routine that I had to follow. That work for the most part. I would get UTI maybe every 4 or 5 months. It began to increase and I was diagnosis pulps in my urethra and they were removed. That cut down on the amount of UTIs and my doc retired. I went to another urologist and was diagnosis with IC. I did not agree with the diagnosis based on all I had read. The doc was very very nasty and went to my 3rd urologist. I like him we were treating the infections plus he would give me an extra antibiotic script so I I got sick while traving for work I could treat myself. The test always showed an infection. So, that doc retired. I went to the 4th urologist who I asked him to please let clean the slate and I wanted him to exam me and lets take it from there. I had had so many doctors and not the same diagnosis. She saw nothing unsual so I went to the 5th urologist who is an IC speclist he told I dont have IC, but I do have cystitis. When they run test a little blood and that is it. The doc feels that I had so many UTIs that were not given a strong enough of a drug, so the infection is now in the walls of my bladder. I am on 750 mg of Levaquin for 21 days. I am about 13 days into it and it is not helping. A heating pad between my legs seems to help, but i want my life back. I have been under his care for about 9 months and now things are WORST. I never use to have bladder and urethra, but now I do. For no reason at all. There is no sex in my life and I am only 39. I had wanted to try and have a baby and I cant even get to step one…sex. it is killing me and my life. The pain goes away when I stand or walk around. There are times my bladder throbs and right now my urethra feels as thought someone has scraped the inside. I do have endometriosis, but all the doc (a diff doc) could see was removed in July. I will say these extra pains were not going on until after the surgery I had to remove a fibroid and the endometriosis. I am going to 6th urlogist in 10 years next Thursday. My OB and Surgeon have both recommend this doc. I hope it helps. As you can see I am committed to finding a doc to diagnosis me and help me become whole again. I live in the DC area and I am so glad to have found this site. I look on the computer every night for at least 2 hrs trying to find a story like mines.

I have been having the same problem you have been having. For me, it does not burn when I pee, but it hurts worst when my bladder is completely empty. When my bladder is empty, i have the constant urge to use the bathroom and only undiluted urine trickles out. When that happens I get a strong pain right at the end. The only thing that seems to relieve the pain is drinking lots and lots of water - giving my bladder something to let go. I emptied my bladder before I went to bed at 12:00am and I woke up at 5:30am with the pain. The pain woke me up! I went to the OBGYN and my urine was clean (though, she still sending it out for a culture). She examined me and is going to test me for yeast infection, chlamydia and gonorrhea and she found some bacterial vaginosis. Something she treated me for before and said that the antibiotic probably didn't get it all. I just had sex with my boyfriend and I felt the pain the next morning. I thought at first it was just the rubbing b/c it had been 1+year since I've been sexually active, but it's not going away. I also feel like I've had this problem with a previous partner, but this is the worst that it's been. I have no idea, but I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one that's experiencing this because then I know it's not just me. I'll keep in touch with my test results in hopes to help all of you.

I'm having persistant urethral discomfort after being treated for a UTI with Cipro. As some of you have described, it feels like an open wound at the urinary opening. I just read about taking proteolytic enzymes on www.totalityofbeing.com as a treatment for cystitis. I'm wondering if they could help this condition. There's also an email address of a doc who wrote a case study using these enzymes. I hope this helps someone if not me.

Like many others i am so glad to have come across this post as it confirms that i am not the only one.
I have had 5 UTI infections in the past 10 months. I used to be treated with Trimetheprine but then i got a really bad infection that it wasn't effective in treating so i went to A&E and they gave me a different strain of antibotic, Cefelexin. This is what i'm treated with now if i have a flare-up. This always seems to work primarily but my urinary habbits have never returned to normal.
Like many others, i have a sore urethra constantly, like a throbbing pain and it only seems to ease when i drink alot of water, as if it dilutes the sting.
My troubles and syptoms started when i became sexually active. This never really was an issue with my ex partner as it was an unhappy relationship and i was glad of any excuse!! But now i am with somebody who i love dearly and would love to not have this fear hanging over my head after every sexual encounter.
I do everything that is recommended. I empty my bladder before and after intercourse, i wear cotton underwear, don't use fragranced soaps and i drink and eat cranberry's by the bucket load.
I keep a couple of antibotics in my bag where ever i go just in case i get flare-up as it petrifies me to be without.
I have an under active thyroid so have to take Thyroxine. I wondered if this was any connection. Does anyone else have this condition?
Also i newly take the contraceptive pill, Loestrine 20. Since taking this 3 months ago i've had two UTI's. Could this be a new connection thats not helping matters?
Also like others, when i go to my GP and have my urine tested, it normally comes back negative. But they still treat me with antibiotics as i have all the symptoms, burning on urination, unbelieveable persistance to pee, very uncomfortable to the point of tears and i can't sit still.
I've had all the STI tests (negative) but i haven't been to a urologist. I might get reffered.
I shall keep track of this post in case anybody finds a solution.
Good luck everybody!

hi all, i'm so glad i'm not going thru this nightmare alone. I've suffered when weeing since i became sexually active 8yrs ago. I was with the same partner for 5yrs and suffered symptoms like cystitis constantly. The tests for infection came bk negative and the docs put it down to honeymoon cystitis so i controlled my bouts with nurofen. Then a few yrs ago following sex with a new partner i started suffering again but this time with bladder pain too. This time i did have an infection and have suffered with UTIs every 5-6mths since. The only antibiotic that seems to work is Cefalexin. I had a cystoscopy and they fiund my bladder lining was slightly inflamed so treated me with a solution inserted through a catheter.A week after my treatment finished i got a another UTI so I'm now at the end of my tether. I really do feel the problem is physical almost as if the muscles of my ureter are too tight or the ureter is narrowed. Like many of you i need to drink lots because weing is painful if i haven' got a full bladder. I have found that fizzy drinks help for some reason-seems to flush me out better. The other thing is that the symptoms come on when I'm tires or run down which makes me wnder if it's related to the immune system. As we speak I'm awaiting another referral with a gynecologist-sex is really painful. I'll update u all with any progress.

I'm having the same problems. I got my third UTI and I had a really bad time with it. I still felt the discomfort and slight pain afterward. Nothing seems to help. I've been to the doctor numerous times, and they all tell me their is nothing wrong. I have also gotten cultures and std tested and nothing has come up. I am inclined to think it has something to do with what the bacteria has done to the urethra and it's having trouble healing because of having to pee. I don't know though. HELP!

Okay, first let me say I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone, out here! I too suffer with chronic UTI's. I have had these awful things, since I was 7 yrs old & I'm 47! I too have been to numerous Urologists. Some say yes, I do have a UTI- others say there is some blood in my urine under microscope, but just a trace, nothing to be concerned with. And, others have dilated my urethra, saying it was closed. I do have to say this with meds did help some for awhile, and I went the longest I ever had without an infection or the symptoms. Then bam back to the same ole same ole! I too have 'had' endometriosis, however I have had a full hysterectomy bc of it, with a bladder repair. The symptoms are the exact same that I had before surgery so I know it isn't related. I have been on numerous antibiotics, and currently take a "maintenance dose" at home, for after sex. Well, with you and many others here...I have no sex life, and hurt so bad I don't want one either! Okay so I go in for my anal female exam, and I'm about on the verge of tears. I told my Dr. how tired I am of being in this pain, taking all these antibiotics that never seem to make the pain go away, and the frequent burning when I pee. She tells me she just recently was at a Medical conference and learned that people can have herpes simplex virus inside their vagina and not even know it, bc there are no lesions present. So she wants to test me for it. She states there is a blood test now to diagnose it, w/o actually having to have a sore to biopsy. Well, low and behold I tested positive for it. So she tells me she wants me to take "acyclovir" everyday, once a day, with some creme of basically the same thing, while the burning is going on, and the pain. Well, at first mixed with the antibiotics (Macrobid 100mgs) twice a day I was feeling lots better. But still get these symptoms, still have chronic and frequent UTI's and my pain isn't just when I pee. I feel burning and discomfort after wards. The only way it stops is to take the Macrobid. Well, I can't stay on that for the rest of my life! I know at some point your body builds an immunity up to antibiotics then when you get really sick and need them. Well then your in trouble! I feel like all Dr's do is treat these symptoms, but they are not finding the cause! And honestly I don't believe that I even have herpes simplex (that yes, is sexually transmitted). My husband went to a Urologist and was tested, he doesn't have it. We have been together 19 yrs. I just don't get it! If there is a DR. or somebody out there that can help all of us here, oh you have no idea how much it would be appreciated! After what I have had done in tests, procedures, and meds costs now I'd fly half way across the world if you could HELP! FYI- I have been told my bladder wall, is very irritated and red too. And, I still have blood in my urine under the scope (I can't see it). My Dr, insists that it is b/c of herpes causing the blood to show up in my labs. There has to be someone out there somewhere that can HELP! By the way can PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) be the cause!? Bc I have read the symptoms really do mimic that! I have asked my GYN and was told "no". HELP!!! Anyone!?!?

well mine all started when i got married and had sex, my honeymoon and many months after i had terrible pain. I thought the pain was just from sex I didnt know I could get an infection from it. I finally went to my gyn and he treated me but the pain did not go away it was there for many years to follow.
Many years passed and so did the pain, but trying with my 4th chid brought it all back, the pain the urgency all in my urethra.
Went to the doctor and of course no infection I suffered many months of pain and tears.
Finally I got pregnant and the pain got better and better, I nursed my baby a year and felt pretty good a dull ache always there but the PAIN PAIN was gone.
My husband and I thought we would go to see the Uro to see if he could get rid of the dull ache once and for all.
He wanted to use the scope to see if anything was there (of course there wasnt). The pain is worse than ever before, the inside of my urethra is like a big huge sore of pain.
The doctor of course says "It shouldnt be hurting" well it is and its worse than ever. What ever happened to first do no harm hummm?
The pain is stealing my life now all I do is cry and sit on ice and heat pad, no drugs help and make it the small ache it was before I even went in there. I HURT TOO if you ever figure it out please let the rest of us who are suffering know too. I would like to be able after 3 yrs to show my husband I love him sexually too.

Well at least none of us is alone in this.
Background Info:
-Started after first time intercourse, and first UTI
-Frequent UTI's thereafter (2 within two months)
-UTI symptoms but no infection at LEAST once a month
-Common trends seem to be sex, alcohol or caffiene when I am not hydrated enough (although only SOMETIMES does this cause a "flare up")
-Had literally EVERY test to test my kidneys, urethra, and bladder with no results; everything looked "normal"
-Medications currently taking: Wellbutrin (100mg once daily), Allegra, Ortho try-cyclin Low
Things I've Found that help:
-No condoms
-Use non-scented, non-spermicidal, simple/pure lubricants for sex, and lots of it
-Avoid too much caffiene or alcohol; avoid it altogether if you currently have "flare up"
-Stay hydrated
-If you have a "flare up" of symptoms, take Cystex if you can. Although it turns your pee orange/red it helps the pain/urge to pee, and even had a mild antibiotic. AVO is another brand. They are in the feminine product aisle and there are different brands that do some of the same things. They also work quickly which helps. It says not to take for more than two days at a time, and I find if I do all of the above I never have to.
Like you all, this is all I know for now. If anyone finds something let me know. If I do, I'll do likewise.

I guess I will add my two cents in on this as well. I was diagnosed with a UTI almost 4 weeks ago. Klebsiella was the strain of bacteria that I had. This is my first UTI. I took 4 different types of antibiotics and then finally went to see a urologist who said that I no longer had the infection, however my symptoms are lingering because of the damage that the infection did to my bladder. He said it could take a month or two maybe longer to heal. I am frustrated as well but hopefully it will go away.

i had blood in my urine for 4 days, i looked it up and said probably a UTI, so i wasnt too concerned. I went to the ER on the 4th night because of severe pain in my abdomen.
I Have Kidney stones, UTI and a non vaginal (bladder) Yeast infection.
I just finished my antibiotics and anti fungal meds, and i still have to pee every 30 minutes, when i urinate only a few drops come out at a time. I'm forcing fluids to clear my stones. I think it may be the yeast infection that a lot of us are experiencing...
I went to the dr today, having bad symptoms for the past few days of UTI and he said there was no bacteria in my urine specimen. I know its not my stones bc they are still in my kidney and ureter, so they wouldnt be putting pressure and causing pain in my urethra.
I HAVE had a bad reoccurance of UTIs in the past, and I have found that if i urinate before and after intercourse, I wont get a UTI. Also, I read keeping your area clean and wiping from front to back keeps forgein bacteria from entering your urethra.
The best advice i can give, however, is to force fluids. It seems if i drink 5 or more cups of WATER a day, my symtoms arent so bad. I cut out colas completely since the ER, and the beer (dehydrates you) and it seems to have helped. Cranberry juice is good, grapefruit juice is bad.
Thats all ive gathered.
