Wait, you didn't have symptoms until AFTER you took cipro?

Hi there,

I have been suffering from the same symptoms for about 5/6 years now.
After seeing multiple doctors, Gync. and having what seemed like hundreds of different creams/pills/antibiotics etc, I was put onto Amitriptyline; 50mg, one every night, which after a few months made it much easier to cope with the pain.
I have been on Amit. for a good few years now and it makes the problem much better to deal with - of course I still get a lot of pain when my bladder is empty, I have not been drinking enough or when I drink a lot of alcohol but it has helped quite a bit.
I'm not sure if you have tried this drug, or talked to a doctor about it, but perhaps you might like to look into it?

I have also had a cystoscopy, which my doctor also said was all fine and nothing had showed up.
I have been checked for STD's, had blood samples taken etc, but apart from these pills I am on now, nothing else has worked.

I have heard of cases where after a certain amount of time this problem can just clear up by itself and while that is frustrating to hear, my doctor has told me that there is a big possibilty of it just vanishing on it's own one day.
I try to find hope in that and cross my fingers that one day I will wake up comepletley pain free.

But for now, attempting to keep the pain at bay is all I can do and chatting to other people that suffer from the same problem also helps, as I know I am not on my own.

Yup. 2 and half days into cipro treatment is when the burning and discomfort started. seems to be subsiding now though. I commented below on some supplements that are helping.

if I may ask, what was the cipro prescribed for? The reason I ask is because that is one of the most common drugs prescribed for UTIs, so it seems odd you wouldn't have had symptoms before they prescribed it unless they prescribed it for something else. I know it is prescribed for many types of infections...but curious. If you weren't diagnosed with a UTI prior to the Cipro, and you began having those symptoms AFTER taking it, I would really think that, for you, it would be linked to an imbalance of bacteria. I know that's not been medically linked to all these symptoms often classified as IC, but it seems many people are finding some relief from using probiotics. Probiotics replenish the good bacteria, which is very much wiped out from the use of antibiotics. I know that the chronic yeast infection symptoms I experience often are worse at the same time I experience the worst of the uretheral problems. Both get worse during PMS and after alcohol. Hormones, sugar and certain foods make both worse. Hmmm.

I had the same problem, treated for UTI for 10 days, went back to the Doctor for a follow-up, checked urine, infection GONE!!But,I'm still having a burning sensation when I urinated.I also spoke with my OB/GYN he told me to finish the medication and if I was still having the problem he would send me to a urologist. While I had the UTI I was seeing blood and started to pass clots as well.Im just concerned because this has been going on since April 23,2012 and it is now May 30,2012 still having some burning but the blood is gone.

hello...I don't know if u r still having issues but when I was young I had the same problem. My dr said my urethra was to small and the urine would form crystals and so I had to have surgery to enlarge it. I have never felt better and it has been thirty years and I have never had the problem again. I hope this helps u and u can get relief...I know how bad this can be

Hello...I was reading this post and I wanted to let u know I had this problem several years ago...it had nothing to do with my urine but had to do with my urethra...it was to small and the urine that stayed in the urethra would crystallized and cause severe pain. So my dr suggested I get my urethra enlarged and after what a relief. Now it was kind of painful after the surgery but it quickly went away and it has been over thirty years and I haven't felt a symptom or problem since. So maybe u should have ur urethra examined and see if this is an issue for you also...I know it sounds painful but not as bad as going the rest of ur life with this problem!!!

I'm curious if you know how they made it larger? That's a long tube for them to open up the whole length of it. Was it just restricted in one place? What did they do?

When I had heart surgery I had a catheter in me for a few days. When the nurse took it out I couldn't believe the size of that tube they had put in there. Of course they inserted it after I was knocked out so I never felt it but it looked to be larger than a pencil. For a while after it was removed it looked like a fire hose stream when I peed, but it went back to normal in a week or two.

I couldn't believe they were able to shove anything that large in there without tearing something.

Sometimes when untake antibiotics for a UTI it can kill all the good bacteria in your body have u tried taking probotics? It helps regenerate the good bacteria and also eating a lot of yogurt helps. Just something you may want to try because even though you are drinking a lot of water you are still flushing all the good bacteria out and the bad bacteria just keeps sticking to the walls of your bladder.

perhaps this can give everyone a starting point to talk to their Urologist about.  I to am going through this similar problem and still no answer other than the gyno thinks it's not female issues but more like a bladder issue.  This started shortly after I had a hysterectomy but I have always had problems with UTI's (it was something that I was born with). GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL.

Bet65- women do not have prostates, so swollen prostate for women is kind of an impossibility

Apologies! I just looked it up and see that female prostate has actually been identified! Seems it was formerly called something else. Interesting. I wonder why doctors aren't focusing more on the possibility of women with our symptoms having a similar problem to male prostate issues? Certainly similar symptoms to some of the male prostate diseases.
