However, the secret is to go to a doctor and keep going until they have got to the bottom of the problem. Both myself and my wife have been told the "Pulled muscle" one many times. The fact is, if you go to a doctor or hospital consultant and get told something, off you trot with a diagnosis and then you still have the pain 2 weeks later. If you don't go back to the doctor, he thinks he was right and that you are sorted.
Sometimes I just have to keep going back and asking the same thing until they come up with a diagnosis. Of course, I'm on this thread because I have similar pains. Doctors don't like hypochondriacs but when you are worried about pains like these, you need to ask questions. Don't be frightened to ask "could this pain be.....?" They will tell you reasons why it won't be what you thought it could be or they will suggest going to a specialist. Your health is in your hands. NHS24 are also good.
I have a 20 year history of kidney stones and many of your symptoms on this thread sound very much like that, but again, only an examination will confirm this. Lots of people have kidney stones and never know it, but if they get stuck, you will know about it because it causes 'back pressure' and depending where it is, could cause renal failure. In this situation, renal failure is recoverable, but it's still serious and will cause you so much discomfort that you are likely to be sick. I've only had renal failure once in 20 years and I couldn't pass any water, but I passed the stone while in hospital on pain killers (Pethidine) and lots of fluids. In the UK they don't like using Pethidine now and so I'm on morphine when I get attacks. I stay at home usually as I know the procedure now. That doesn't make it any less serious, I have to be aware of my conditions and when I may need an X-ray to determine if the stone needs help to be voided.
I also have cysts - quite a few and had a bleed on the kidney cyst which kept me resting for 15 days. Not very pleasant, but it helped the cyst to shrink and is therefore more comfortable.
My message to you all is that the internet can be valuable, but it is not a diagnosis and it may cause you to worry more. Always better to get the doctors opinion and value your health and your right to health. If you think your doc isn't taking you seriously, see another doc or specialist.

Hi I have amdominal pains in my sides (when I say sides I mean both of them) It has been ongoing for about 2-3 years now. The pain is near my hip bone. Now I am not constipated. I have had many ultra-sounds done they all came back normal, I have done urine samples still nothing. I don't know what could be causing this. Any ideas?

I readily make kidney stone and flush them out. Some people make them and never know they are there. You can get referral pain from one kidney to the other. Might be a good idea to get blood test for uric crystals - these form into stones and also deposits in your joints, which cause 'Gout'. However, the test will be negative if you actually have uric crystal forming in the joints - you have to be clear of a 'gout attack' before getting tested.
I also have cysts on my kidney (left) which is 7cm and bleeds and is very painful when it bleeds - for day (10 - 15), but not a serious problem apart from keeping you awake and you can hardly work.
Colon problems are numerous. At least you have ruled out one of them - or have you? Did you get a test to rule out constipation? I had a kidney scan which identified the bleeding cyst and at the same time constipation - and I'm regular at the loo. That was news to me.
Will you die of this pain? I don't think so. I've had it for 20 years - pain in the side and have a 20 history of kidney stones forming in a blink. Most stones flush themselves out (painful). I take co-codamol 30/500 for the pain (especially at night - helps sleep) or Severdol (Morphine sulphate) for extreme kidney colic. I only managed to get sevradol after years of attacks. Hospitals only monitor you if you have an attack and as a last resort - manually remove the stone - so I like to stay at home now rather than wait in a hospital.
You can take Ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time if you need to - always ask your pharmacist. You need to nail your doc down and ask what it could be and why he thinks it isn't such and such a problem. All the best.

Thank you for getting back to me, I didn't know I had a reply just checked my emails, when I say a 'normal ultra-sound'. That is the exact same way the doctor worded it, He and She said there was nothing un normal about it, and that everything was fine, now I have been experincing pain that in my lower back and goes all the way to both my sides and a little bit just above the private parts but on my belly. I saw a doctor yesturday, he told me to stop taking pain medications. Then later that night I ended up in the emergancy room with this pain, I had told them what had happened and what the doctor said to me and they gave me panadine forte, I am thinking about seeing a different doctor, all this pain in getting beyond a joke, I have been suffering pain for nearly 3 years, I have pain nearly everyday. If any of you have any advice about what I should do please let me know. Thank you in advance!

Hi Jessica, I've just been in the USA and realise that here in the UK we are spoilt with medical help. We can ask the doctor many times without cost. In Scotland, medication is also free at present. from your description, it sounds like you have could have more than one thing, or perhaps, your symptoms have even become more specific about the nature of your problem. If you can afford it, you need to mention all these specific details to your doctor. Pain in the pelvic area could simply be bladder infection (and that's sore - like a knife). At the same time, it could be stones in the bladder that are causing that infection, but you can't discount that the infection has come from outside. either way, the infection can travel to the kidney which would give you back pain which can become over-bearing pain. You need treatment for any infection like this. Urin samples are good to take to the doctor, or visit the doctor with a full bladder and ask for a specimen jar (which is clean) to give a present sample. I think the symptoms would have to be still present for any infection to show up. Doctors generally do not prescribe medication until they know what type of infection is causing the problem. They may also tell you that you have a non-specific infection. Bladder stones (from the kidney) can block the urethra and the pain will go all the way back to both kidneys causing the pain you describe. So can a bladder infection, which is why it is important to get it identified and treated. Otherwise, it will immobilse you until you get it under control. Drink plenty of water - but not too much (8 glasses a day) When the doctor tells you "There is nothing unusual or un normal", this can even apply to them finding cysts which apparently many of us are born with. I have a cyst which is bleeding inside itself. When it bleeds inside itself, this is not a concern (so it is normal) because it drains itself at the same time. However, this 'normal' is not to say it doesn't cause pain. It does, and you just take strong pain killers for it, but it is not dangerous (once they have taken scans / X-rays of it. The important thing to do is get medical staff to check you out rather than rely on forums. Also, don't worry too much. 3 years is a long time to have this pain. I've had it 20 years. So it's not serious, just a nuisance. I hope you drink around 8 glasses of clean water every day. If not, try to increase how much clean water you drink. Tea & coffee and soft drinks do no hydrate you like water. Yes, water is boring, but ill health and pain in more than boring. I'm really hoping you get to the bottom of this. If it is bladder infection, you may find you are prone to it (being a woman) and you will just have to try to change your lifestyle a little to avoid problems. And of course, when you find the diagnosis, look up on the internet what things can cause that problem and then you'll have a clue as to what to change in your life. All the best - Steve
