What you're describing sounds like a perianal abscess. Most perianal abscesses are derived from infected anal glands, which when blocked promote bacterial growth. Now the thing about perianal abscesses is that they can form fistulas, which is a serious complication that occurs in 30-60% of perianal abscesses (Emedicine - perianal abscess). Anal fistulas are a tunnel-like openings that would lead from your rectum to the skin... they require surgical intervention, so the recommended treatment for a perianal abscess is incision and drainage... watchful waiting while treating with an antibiotic is inadequate and not recommended. The key to dealing with a perianal abscess is early treatment.

The differential diagnosis for perianal abscesses are as follows:

1. Infected presacral epidermal inclusion cysts [a benign cyst].
2. Hidradenitis suppurativa - a long standing pus forming condition of apocrine glands (special sweat glands found in your pubic region and in your armpits)
3. Pilonidal disease - a skin infection of the gluteal cleft [nice word for a butt crack] that occurs mostly in young men. It's an infected hair follicle that eventually forms an abscess).
4. Bartholin's abscess (Bartholin glands are found on either side of the vaginal opening).

BTW, you're not describing any sort childhood cancer... so stop worrying and go see a doctor.

For almost all of you, it's almost certainly an ingrown hair.
Particularly for those who shave! And for those who are at puberty or a few years into it (you'll gain more hair as the years go on, leveling off at about 18).
For ingrown hairs, it starts out moderately sensitive, and after a few days gets more and more sensitive to the touch making you feel like shoving a needle into it as it hurts about that bad when touched anyways. But, it doesn't get worse beyond that --- well, unless you try squeezing it at that point to pop it -- OUCH!!!! The pain is pretty intense.
But, after a couple more days after that peak pain, it quickly decreases in swelling and you can then feel the lump under the skin, the hair. Usually at this time you can heat a needle to bright red over a lighter, then let it cool down, then poke the needle into the lump a small amount and hook out the hair pretty easily -- do NOT fish around for it!! If it doesn't come out easy, then leave it alone for a few more days. Even if you cannot get it out, your body will keep flaking off skin around the area until the hair is pushed out of the skin.

As for girls in particular, if it doesn't hurt much, then it is possible you have a small cyst and you can usually massage these out, as gross as that sounds... sometimes if you can pinch the skin under it you can massage it until it pops out of the skin, just like hard zit puss that comes out like a small grain of rice. It's totally normal.

I was wondering if any of the female responders are noticing this lump a week or two before their cycle. I have had this for some time ( and since I started shaving) about a week before I was due to menstruate. I am wondering if this has anything to it?

ugh. ok so im 16yrs old i had sex last year with my bf at the time then i moved 2 oregon and well after i haad sex with him a couple days later it felt like my ovaries were being yanked and pulled on and when i went to the bathroom it hurt so bad to pee, and when i peed i peed out blood but it was kind of watery ...and when i wiped myself there was no blood on the tissue. remind u i was 15 at the time so i thought i just had a misscariage. well wen ii came here, a couple months ago i had this redish bump in between my anus and vagina. it hurt so bad to sit and even to touch it. when i pee'd it stung really bad and even when i wiped myself. so everytime i went to the bathroom, id hop in the shower and wash it cause that would stop the pain (i was taking 4-5 showers a day) when i first came to oregon i had my first papsmear ever, they said i didnt have anything...but then i just recently found out that papsmears don't look for herpes or any other thing lke that, they just check to see if everything is running right, i also got a h.i.v test so i no its not that...im too afraid to tell my gramma, i dont ever have any white bumps or any crust things like i be reading on the internet...this has only happen once, and within a few days it went away. ive only been sexual w.that one man and his ex girlfriend and i are friends now and she says she's had the exact same thing that i have...im worried because im so scared to be with someone else. i dont want to give anybody something that i may have! its scary. oh and also, ive had a lump like at the top of my vagina on and off every since i was like 12. its one bump, and its there for a couple of days but it goes away...what is that? i wasnt sexual then..at that time. im just afraid and i really need help plz someone!

i've something like that and it's been there for 4 days now, except mine is located to the right of my vagina parallel to the urine canal, just before the thigh joint..
it's also a sore, stiff area the size of a jellybean and it actually feels muscular..
actually it feels like there's a lump of swollen, strained muscle of some sort beneath the skin.. it's making me nervous and it hurts to touch it or even to sit down and walk sometimes..
i know what a zit or a block hair feel like and it's not either..
i'm thinking it probably has something to do with a strained muscle as it appeared the day after some really rough sex..
could that be? can one strain a muscle in that area?

it's also a sore, stiff area the size of a marble and i think it feels muscular..
actually it feels like there's a lump of swollen, strained muscle of some sort beneath the skin.. it's making me nervous.. it hasn't grown or anything but it feels like it hasn't shrunk either.. and it hurts to touch it or even in some sitting down positions and to walk sometimes.. nothing astronomical, though, but it's a pretty annoying pain..
i know what a zit or an ingrown hair feel like and that's not it.. the area actually feels really rigid and tensed up..
i'm thinking it most probably has something to do with a strained muscle as i noticed it the day after some really rough sex, it might have even appeared right after, but i was kind of drunk and i don't really remember..
could that be? can one strain a muscle in that area?
how long should i wait before contacting a doctor (last option) and if it is indeed a strain how do i treat it?
THANKS!

Hi there, I think that you should probably tell your mom about it. Please bear in mind that if you have a lump, it can sometimes be something that's really bad for your health. If you don't tell someone about it, it can get worse and even hurt you! Do you think you can tell your mom? She will be understanding, I promise.

Ok ladies, I have read ALL of the responses to the original post, and Im here to offer my experiences. When I was a Sophomore in HS (I'm almost 23 now) I got a bump at the very end of my vagina, on the right side. It was very painful to the touch, to go pee, to sit in any position that wasnt laying down, and you could just forget about walking normally. I was talking to my cousin (we are the same age) and telling her about my problem. She at first thought it was a hemorrhoid, just judging by what I was telling her but it wasnt in the normal area of a hemorrhoid. She gave me some pimple fighting cream, just in case it might have been a pimple, and I went home. Over the next few hours I used that cream every chance I got and that night even slept butt naked b/c clothes seemed to irritate it to no end. The next morning I woke up to fluid draining from it and the swelling going down. There was no more pain and I could walk just fine.

Since then, every time I got something like that, I pull out the pimple fighting cream. Sometimes it works within the day, sometimes it take a week or so for it to have an effect. When it takes longer then a day, I take nice warm baths with Epson Salt to help draw out whatever is in there. In my case it was never an ingrown hair b/c I never shaved down there, I just kept in trim.

Now I have another sore like pimple right at the end of my vagina and at the beginning or my anus and I have measured it with my fingers and this one is a doosy. Its about the size or a quarter and driving me up a wall. but I'm using the same pimple cream / hot bath method as usual and it seems to be working. Hope this helps anyone. also, if you ever feel one coming on that diesnt seem to be coming out of no where.... try taking a warm bath immediately or as soon as you can and scrub it with soap and warm water. usually only takes once for me before it disappears but keep doing that till it goes away, then you wont have to deal with all the pain if you can get rid of it before it becomes an issue.

i am a fourteen year old girl and i have noticed the same problem. it is just below my vagina on the left side, it is rather small and causes me no pain unless it is touched. i am not sexually active so i am slightly confused on what this could be. it looks very similar to a yellow headed spot that you can get on your face only slightly bigger. i have been keeping a log on what it's been doing just to be sure, i first noticed it 3 days ago, it seems to be smaller today than it was yesterday. i have not yet told my mum or been to see a doctor, should i continue to wait it out? if you have ANY idea what it could be, please tell me :'(

i have two zits near my anus, across from each other. yesterday i noticed them (cleaning in the shower) and they popped almost immediately, oozing somewhat brown and thick puss. i have no way of having an sti, but i am worried as to what it could be. My mom and sister think it's just a cyst and it should be fine, but i am admittingly a hypochondriac and obsess about my health. i squeezed almost all of both of them today, with oil and blood spotting out sometimes. it hurts to sit and pee. i've looked all over the internet and this thread, and some of the suggestions worry me. what is it?
