I had a hammertoe repaired. The doctor suggested leaving the pin in my toe. It is now 4 months. My toe is still sensitive. I also get numbness in my metatarsal area. Have you ever heard of leaving a pin in your toe? Should I insist on its removal?

I have never heard of leaving a pin in the toe for such an extended time. I believe it should be removed. The surgery is nothing to be feared. Of course, there is recovery time and it is slightly uncomfortable but nothing to be scared about. Go for it. It will feel better than the toe problem prior to surgery. :-D

I would certainly get a second opinion. Only if you are a slow healer, would the pins have to stay in longer. Age is a factor in healing time.

If it is a pin that is sticking out of the toe, then yes. Make him remove it. It should have been removed after 6 weeks. The only reason for the pin is to fuse the bones in your toes so your toe will be straight.
If it is an internal pin then it will eventually dissolve (6-12 months) and it cannot be removed.
Good luck.

I believe I am in the early stages of getting hammertoes. Can someone tell me what the main symptoms feel like? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
