I am 18 years old, and it is 2 months post tonsillectomy. Nothing could have prepared me for the pain of having my tonsils removed. I have had kidney stones, obstructed ureters, kidney infections, and many surgerys, and nothing is like the recovery process of this procedure!
Before I had my tonsils removed, I asked a few friends who had also had the procedure when they were younger, and they said 'oh, mmm, yeah, it hurts a bit'. Under statement of the year. My doctor told me id be in excrutiating pain for 2 weeks, I didn't believe him. if only i knew!!
Before I went into my operation, there was a girl the same age as me just coming out from the same procedure (it takes about 45 mins max) and she was screaming with pain. I thought, if only I could wake up and be okay, ill be right. How wrong i was!
I have made a checklist of things to be prepared for!
1. NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN YOUR JAW! Your jaw has been extendedopen for an hour and you'll be luck if you can open in 2cms in the initial days.
2. NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK! Arm yourself with a notepad and pen to communicate. You will sound like you are deaf with you speak.
3. Recovery process of about 12 days. Prepare yourself mentally and remember the rewards at the end. (NO MORE TONSILLITIS!)
4. Invest in a good icepack. Hold it under your jaw and around the top of your neck and throat, it will numb the pain, and feel like this has solely saved your life!
5. Be prepared for ear infections. This is a very big problem for a lot of people. Your ears, nose a throat are all joined, and if one thing is sick, they all get sick.
6. Pain in the morning. During the night when you were asleep, even if you breathe through your nose, you will have such a dry throat in the morning, and it kills! No matter how much water you have, it wont seem to go away. So use FREEZING cold water, this will also numb the throat partically.
7. Problems with swallowing. I found that when I swallow (even now) the liquid will go out of my nose. it is as if you cant block your nasal passage to prevent this. It will hurt initally, so perhaps it is a good idea to close your nostrils with your fingers to block it, and swallow.
8. Try not to cry. The strain on your throat will hurt. Not worth it.
GOOD LUCK!!
