I am running my approximately 40th race this morning and I just realized that I am not nervous about it. I used to get nervous that I hadn't trained enough or that I would go out to fast or to slow etc. Now I just show up and race. Granted right before the start I start concentrating on running a smart race but I am no longer as nervous as I used to be.

I guess I am realizing what my limitation are and setting more realistic goals for each race.

I hope that everyone who is racing today has a fun safe race.

I don't think I get nervous, but very excited. Using a heart rate monitor is nearly impossible as we line up for the race.

I don't classify mine as nerves because I already know I'm NOT going to win anything. :D

Have fun, and good luck at your race!

Especially if it is a new (longer) distance or I am going for a PR.

I still do. I guess it is good. It helps me get my mind focused on what I have to do.

I usually get excited about it. I definitely will be alot more nervous for the half that's coming up for I haven't raced that distance before.

If I've been training hard, I do.

If I've been a slug...like lately...I don't because I know I won't run that good.

I guess there is a benefit to slugliness.

still do...I actually am relieved when I spot a woman that I "know" will beat at a race. The burden of "trying to win" is gone and i can run my own race---which is something that happens more often than not :|

Pre race jitters or butterflys in the stomach = Flight or flight response.
Do your best to get them back or good race times (performances) will go out the window.

Even though i'm still only getting back into running, and have run one race in the past 3 years, i'm gonna say yes.

All through high school and college, i was nervous before every race. When i did some road races during the same period, it was the same thing. I suspect i'm someone who'll always get the butterflies before the gun goes off. As soon as i start the race, the butterflies are gone and i'm doing my thing (at whatever speed my thing happens to be)

Depends on the race for me. Most of the time I do get some sort of jitters.

so once you become a superstar, you still get nervous??!!!
That stinks!
I don't really get nervous much...Think the only time i was really nervous was when I ran that 10K injured in Madison with mega...

203 races and still do... nothin' major mind you, but it never gets easy knowing it's time to lay out 100% on the road. Heck, I even find myself getting a little warped when I head to the track for intervals. There's just something a little unnerving about knowing you'll be reaching deep into the tanks. I look at it as a positive though. My body is flinching a little about what the mind is asking it to do. If it didn't happen, I'd think I wasn't focused enough.
