I am confused/concerned, today is July 22 2009 and my period was supposed to start on July16th or17th 2009 and it did not show up. I have taken 2 HPT(home pregnancy tests) both have come back negative. I followed the exact directions in the box. I am not able to get to my doctor for another week and a half hes on vacation. I have also been having dull cramping on and off as well as dull aching lower back, dull headaches and every once in a great while a little nausea but no vomiting or spotting also i find i have been much more sleepy lately. I have never been pregnant before i am a healthy 27 year old married woman .What i am wondering is if i am pregnant is it normal to have the dull cramping on and off for the last 6-7 days if so how long can the cramping last? Also why are my HPT's coming up negative i am not sure if its any help but i was using the "First Response" HPT's? I took the first test 2 days after my missed period(july 18th and the 2nd one yesterday, July 21st I am not quite understanding why this is happening and its very frustrating, because my husband and I would love to know if i am pregnant or not. Either way i am going to the doctor when hes back in town but has anyone else experienced these things before? Any help would be great , Thanks for your time!

If you are pregnant, you may be testing negative for a couple of reasons. If your urine doesn't have enough yellow coloring in it, it may be too diluted to use to accurately test for pregnancy. Also, some women just don't test positive at all or for a while using HPTs. Therefore, it would be wise to get a blood test. See if you can't call the hospital and ask if they can contact the doctor and ask to get you called into a lab. You don't actually have to see your doctor. You can just get a blood test scheduled at a lab.

Yes, it's normal to have cramping such as this during the first trimester of pregnancy. This typically happens because the ligaments attached to the uterus are stretching and/or are irritated. It happens quite often for some women, especially a first pregnancy. This cramping typically goes away after the first trimester, although some women can experience it further on.
