I want to be a supportive friend without overstepping boundaries for the moment.  We aren't married, and he isn't telling me much.  He suffered a dissected aorta a few weeks ago, is getting very slowly "better," but what can I expect?  I just wish I could hold his hand, but he wants me to stay away for now.  Of course I'll respect his wishes, but I'm wondering what his life will be like.  How much better will he get?  He's in his early 60s, lived very healthy, very active, a very youthful early 60s.

Hi Concerned,

Your friend is very fortunate to still be with us.  A dissected aorta can be, and usually is, life threatening.

Assuming there were no other issues as a result of the dissection, then there should be minimal issues.  One of the problems with such a surgery is that it is often quite invasive.  There is usually not an easy access to the dissection and it is often done under "emergency" conditions.  Recovery can be painful.

Keeping active, within prescribed limits, will help ensure that he keeps his strength up and his muscles don't atrophy.

Control of blood pressure will likely be the long term concern.

Hope it helps.
