Good Morning all. I had a Splincterotomy done last week. My advice is don't go overboard with stool softeners. Especially when you undergo colonoscopy it will take 2-3 days for your first BM. Just wait it will happen. Mine happened on the third day. A bit of discomfort but you will feel fine soon. If you are going for the procedure go for it. Its fairly safe and nothing to worry.

I had the LIS proceedure just over 4 weeks ago due to a re-occuring fischer. The surgeon made it sound like a cake walk however, my experience has been the total opposite. The first 2 weeks were unbearable. I eneded up in the emergancy room the weekend following my proceedure due to the unbearable pain and fear of infection. It turned out that the Tremadol they prescribed me for pain was doing nothing and they sent me home with a new prescription for morphine. I was taking 2 morphine pills and 2 Advil 400 gel caps every 4 hours even through the night. Sitz baths helped tremendously as they were really my only relief. The best advice i can give you is be prepared and get as much info as you can before hand, drink lots of water, increase your fiber and avoid all foods that can possibly constipate you, sitz bath after every bm on top of the recomended 3. I have followed all the instructions given to me and 4.5 weeks post surgery i am back to work (light duties) but still full time. Im still not completely healed with a minor infection (even though i sitz bath twice a day still and use sensitive cleansing wipes as well as rinse with moistened toilet paper after every bm and to cleanse any discharge every hour) which i have been prescribed fucidin cream for. I also developed granular tissue at the insicion site which can look scary but its actually normal and healthy but very sensitive, and am still experiencing some light bleeding and still very sensitive and after 8 hrs of retail work i need to lay down and relax the rest of the day. I'm looking forward to when it is all over. I wish you and anyone one else who decides that this form of treatment is neccessary the best of luck and hope your experience is better than mine.

My husband had a lateral sphincterotomy 3yrs ago due to an anal fissure. He had minor pain, healed well, but developed itching in the perinium area and flairs up at times and is VERY itchy!!! He never had this problem before surgery. He saw an allergist, dermatologist who gave him creams to try. He just saw a new dermatologist and said sometimes the surgery can cause nerve endings to be damaged near the area. What do you think??

Eat strawberries and walnuts and take miralax. No oats, wheat, starches...you'll cause harder stools.

Hello,

I am a male in my mid 30's and I've been diagnosed with internal and external hemorrhoid (they retract) and an anal fissue. I've been scheduled for a colonoscopy, hemorrhoidectomy and a sphincterotomy.

I've been reading through the numerous post here and i'm seriously rethinking whether or not i should proceed with this surgery.

A bit of background.
All of my life i've been the type to take 30min-1hr on the toilet...not because i needed it but because it was my way of relaxing and usually catching up on some reading :) So i've never had any real issues when it came to the bathroom....until about 3-5 years ago. One day i had an experience on the toilet that felt like i blew out my innards through my backend! EXTREMELY painful and what looked like lots of blood. So i'm guessing this was the day my fissure happend. Since then, the bathroom hasn't been so inviting. Shortly after this incident i went to a specialist which was the worse doctor visit of my life. The exam turned into a 30min heated debate of him yelling at me to relax when he simply didn't understand i spent 30+ years keeping that door a 1 way track and i wasn't about to let him make it a 2 way! Sorry, have to make some humor out of a negative. Since he was never able to get in for an exam he didn't diagnose me with anything and He wanted a colonoscopy. But after that visit i decided the pain was easier to deal with than dealing with that jerk.

Since then though the years i've had ocassional bleeding during bowel movements and i've notice more of a presence of external hemorrhoids (they retract a few hours later). Since hitting my deductible late this year i decided to go back to that clinic and see a different doctor. Told the doc what happened last time (old doc no longer at this practice or in the area) and he tried to make me more comfortable this time. Before even getting in he noticed the fissure and stopped right there because he said it would cause me alot of pain if he did the exam. So he's the one that reccomended the surgeries.

So after reading all the post here, i'm really starting to rethink these procedures and wondering if i'm jumping the gun and assuming more risk than what my current discomfort is.

The only discomfort i have these days is during a bowel movement when the internal hemorrhoids go external. It doesn't hurt to have the bowel movement itself, it's just the discomfort after that feels like i have a couple marbles hanging out. After a few hours they go back in. So i always do my bowel movements right before bed. Yes, there are times when i'd love to go during the day and suffer some embarrassing stomach gurgles because of it.
The only time i have bleeding (not sure if it's the hemorrhoids or the fissure) is if i would have multiple bowel movements in a day or if i'm sick and i have diarrhea.

So the big question......Are the risk/complications/discomfort of surgery worth the discomforts that i'm experiencing day to day?? Do i just need to eat more healthy and excercise and i'll be fine?

Thanks in advance!

I've had 2 seperate bandings for hemorrhoids, that left a fissure. Just had the sphincterotomy, 4 days ago had first bm today,. Not too bad but I had use laxatives,. Sucky. Here's a tip, 3 colace per day, 1 glass of miralax. Consume 2 apples 4 fiber gummies, 1 fiber bar, and a salad with lots of greens. Plus 60-80 oz of water per day. No caffeine no red meat for at least three days days after. Don't believe the horror stories everyone is different. And if people aren't eating 28-30 grams of fiber and 70 oz of water,. Then you reep what you sow,. Stool softener s from the start. If your taking pain meds, up your water and try raw cocoanut oil, 1 tablespoon per day, in water decaf coffee or straight up. Your gonna have to poop, so man up, relax and use that sit bath. The anxiety of the bm is way worse than the bm.

The banding isn't too bad,. I wish I had tried stapling technique 1st, but it is what it is. I just had sugury for my fissure,. but weather you get surgery or no, your diet MUST change. Your not 20 anymore, pizza burgers all that awesome sh*t, is kids food. 28-30 grams of fiber 60oz water, no exceptions or you will pay. Research your fibers 1)soluable 2)insoluble and 3)ruffiage. And 2-3 colace per day. You'll thank yourself. Honestly,. My diet has completely changed over the past year,. And really for the best, I lost 25lbs and look great! I'm 34 and I'm back to my college wieght.

I had this surgery and I had band ligation and am experiencing the same symptoms it's been 3 1/2. How are you now and how long did it take for you to heal and be pain free?

I had a lateral sphincterotomy with removal of skin tag yesterday and was told by my surgeon that the skin tag would take longer to heal and be considerably more painful. Just wondering on people's experience with this. Also very paranoid about incontinence, is it something I would already know about or develop over time? I did have a moment last night after passing wind for the first time and had to check that's all it was. So far I have been very fortunate in the sense I have felt no pain although I have not had a bm yet but the thought of it terrifies me to the point of nausea

Did u have a BMO yet? How was it? I am thinking of having the LIS done but not sure if my pain warrants having surgery. I got my anal fissure around Christmas time. Intense burning an hour after my bum that would last for hours. I was scheduled for LIS a week ago but cancelled because I was terrified!! Pain has decreased to a mild discomfort. Am suppose to see. My general surgeon in 3 weeks.

My daughter had her surgery 12-1-2017. There was no complications. She is eating right and no excessive bleeding. After two weeks the doctor stated she is right were she is suppose to be for the healing process. She takes Colace twice a day. She does not require a laxative. She has a normal bowel movement everyday. We use the shower head and sitz bath to keep her clean. She is down to 400 mg of Ibuprofen after the bowl movement. She is still very sensitive in that area. It is now 11 weeks out and she feeling it still on the left and the right. It is still better than before the surgery, but how long is the healing process? I keep reading a lot of people bounce back after 6 weeks. I know everybody body is different but how long is two long before you start to worry? The doctor told my daughter it might be 3 months. Is there anyone that has had it take longer to heal than six weeks?

The surgery is well worth it. I was terrified to have it done myself but so very glad i did. I dealt with it for years and it only got worse. I was afraid to eat or have a bowel movement because i knew the pain would set in about an hour later. Yes it was painful after surgery but with time it healed and i have no problems at all now. Thats been about 8 or 9 years ago now. Please face your fears and have it done you will be so relieved and thankful later on.

It seems like it took me @ 2 to 3 months before I felt completely normal after the surgery. I to was a bit worried for the same reason. But it it is a sensitive area and with pressure from passing bowel movements it will take time. I have had zero complications since the surgery @ 8 or 9 yrs ago. So very glad i had it done. Good luck. Be patient.
