I just had a fisure cauterized, a lateral sphincterotomy, and three hemorrhoids removed. The most relief I have received is with a sitz bath that fits into the top of the toilet. The wet heat relaxes the rectal muscles, and a bowel movement is relatively painless. I hasve passes feces into the sitz container, which I promptly dump out and clean. Sounds gross, but it really works. I am raking citrucel powder three times a day also.

Had a fissurectomy and sphincterotomy and one polyp removed four days ago. I stopped taking pain meeds and noticed some pus drainage. Am hoping that antibiotics will cure this and not cause any other problems. I would like to know how many grams of fiber I should be consuming each day the first week after this surgery. Have been taking Citrusel twice a day. I am wondering if anyone else knows if some pus drainage is common after this surgery?

I recently had a sphincteromory/anoplasty and I had drainage for about 10 days after surgery. I was told it was normal. I just kept the area packed lightly with half a piece of gause. and changed it 3 times a day after sitz bath.

One week out of surgery, am feeling better each day. I am almost comfortably walking around -way better than in days past. Would like to know how others have progressed during weeks 2 and 3? What has worked for other people regarding how many stool softeners, metamucil type products? This discussion topic has provided much needed information. It is important to get back to a normal higher fiber diet, but wonder what other's have experienced. I'd like to progress smoothly, without too many issues. The most helpful tip has been to soak in water...could not have done without it. I have found that it is not easy to have this surgery and then have the Dr. Go on vacation for ten days.

I had my surgery on the 03/08/2010 and its now 1 week and 5 days later. the pain is excruciating, basically go into a cold sweat just thinking about having a bm. not to mention the fact that i pass wind whenever - MOST EMBARASSING - why do the drs decide to neglect to tell us this before surgery. or the fact that "oh the surgery and post surgery is not so painfull" you may return to work the very next day. what a load of hogwash. i am glad i had the surgery as i know i will be felling alot better in the next few weeks. i too have the pus leakage and "dripping" after a bm. i would not even wish this pain on my worst enemy. but would recommend it, if it gonna help. best of luck to everyone and hope you all be feeling loads better shortly.

I had my surgery four days ago... tonight was the first night that I was actually able to sit in a car comfortably. I'd have to lift my butt for every bump we hit in the road. After the first day, I was dreading my first bowel movement so bad. I had heard and read horrible things and to expect the equivalence of your first bowel movement after giving birth. I am only twenty years old and had a fissure. After having ongoing stomach pains and blood in my stool my gastroenterologist recommended me to a surgeon. First I had a colonoscopy then was told to get a sphincterotomy. The doctor did say 2-3 weeks should be recovery time but after reading everyone elses posts I'm a little bit nervous. I have been taking stool softeners 2-3 times a day, i take benefiber, and mineral oil. My first bowel movement was today and it hurt A LOT. I cried afterward and fell asleep with an ice pack on my butt. You need to be on a high fiber diet. And it even hurts to pass gas. I chose not to take the pain killers prescribed because my surgeon said it constipates you so i'm sticking to extra strength tylenol which I generally take at night so I can sleep through the pain. It is getting easier as each day passes, I just dread those bowel movements and I try my hardest to keep my stool soft so it will not hurt. I recommend doing a sidtz bath three times a day and changing your diet temporarily to help ease the pain.

TO ALL YOU PAIN IN THE ASS SUFFERERS!!!!
I understand every word you pain and your torment, Its been 6 years since I had my Ass reconstruction and Guess what time for another one!!! I still have the memories from the 1st time let alone having to go through that all again. However as you know living with a pain in the Ass is worse than trying to Fix it. Hmmm So I do hope that you get a better used by date on your Buts cause I didn't realise it came with an expiry Date. For all you Readers the best thing I could have got to help with those 1st few Days of Cronic Pain in the Ass BM's was Para Choc a liquid Laxative that really helps and tastes nice 2. It has a Lube effect. If ya know what I mean lol. Salt Baths and Pain Killers of the best type you can get. I personally think that its a shame that you have to go through all the Pain and Torture and know one even gets to see it. Not like getting a Boob job or a Nose Job or your Ears Pinned Back. But yet its like an important part just not a Feature. Ripped off I reckon. Well at least we can say that we Know what a real Pain in the Ass Feels Like. LMAO lol XXXXXXX my But!!!! Love to you all.

I had a hemmoroidectomy, fissurectomy and sphincterotomy on Aug. 13th done as a day surgery. Was put on citricel twice daily a week before surgery and after surgery. Followed Drs. instructions after surgery to try and have a bowel movement, milk of magnesia after not going for one day, second day adding senokot. Returned to Dr. on the 18th after doing all the previous plus enemas still not having a bowel movement, was impacted, was sent right to hospital for more surgery that afternoon. sent home. Followed same regiman as above including sitz baths, this was a Wed. Returned to the Dr. the following Mon. 23rd without having a bowel movement and of course in excutiating pain. Was impacted again and this time was admitted to the hospital to undergo yet another surgery. Was told I could not go home until I could have a bowel movement on my own. Was given metimucil, mirolax and enemas twice a day with no results, Finally on Thursday they did a disempaction right in my room as I could not be put under anathesia again, blood pressure was running too high. This was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I do not believe my care was handled well at all. I am a healthy 57yr old female.

I had my sphincteronomy 5 days ago.
I could not have gone on without the operation. I was in 10/10 agony after every bowel movement. By the time I had my surgery ( I'm a 48 yr old male) I was in a terrible state. Movements are still painful and I ache for ages afterwards. I am having trouble getting stools to be soft and so am bleeding a bit during them so will go back to my specialist tommorow. This has been a really hard trip tbh and to all others out there I know this is very very painful. If something is not working see a specialist, get advise and take charge of your situation. Don't just suffer because the apin can be unbelieveable. If you're at the very early stages ie have a fissure see your Doctor now, drink lots and lots of water... do not eat anything with sharp edges. This is not a fight you want to lose.

hi C.HH ..wow two weeks post op. What did you have all done.? I am going in tomorrow to get lateral sphincterotomy , fistulectomy , polyps removed and fissure fixed. I am freaking out totally. I bought a sitz bath , did you use one.? How painful was it after wards. Can you walk around now , how long did it take you to walk around after the surgery.? sorry so many questions I just am so nervous. I have had a hysterectomy Tah two and a half years ago and wasn't as nervous. I am just worried about the pain. I already have severe pelvic dysfunction with chronic pelvic pain , pelvic congestion syndrome , cyctocele and enterocele. this bum surgery is a result of all the pelvic pressure and spasm. .......sigh.... would like to get that all fixed too. I hope your appointment goes well and your healing well. thanks for sharing and i hope to hear back from you very soon..

I heard it takes around two weeks for any pain to subside, trouble is pain killers can cause constipation which isthe last thing you need after this surgery.

Cream, potions and tried everything all bar a Peruvian witch doctor although right now if I had his number would give call. Had tailored sphicterotomy 4 weeks ago. Week one pain and infection. Took ciproflaxin, no change in pain from before op. Fourth week second infection at site. Now on augmenting. Sat hear now typing on my knees. No let up. Regret op. Many succeed so this rant is selfishly for my benefit and hope not to put off.
