I guess I must have been very  lucky , I had my surgery yesterday , it was a breeze, really , went into surgery at 8:30 am, was totally out of anesthesia by quarter to 10 , left the hospital at 10;30 , went home , took one of the pain killers, although I had no pain , followed the instructions, on using ice for 20 minutes every hour , drank plenty of water , had a light dinner , soup and chicken . Went to bed, tired , but no pain, took half of the pain pill just in case , slept like a log until early morning ... Ate fruits , tried to go to the bathroom , but nothing happened , took the rest of the dressings off, there was a very small amount of blood . Took a tub bath, ate some more fruits and drank more water , and finally went to the bathroom . Very little discomfort , no blood , huge but soft BM 's . Very surprised  by the total lack of pain ,or blood ,etc. So far I think this is the best decision I ever made when it comes to my health . Pricey but I  think is worth getting my life back . Side benefits , weight loss, becoming more aware of eating healthier , realizing life is too short to suffer cause of your butt .... this surgery is a no brainer , do it, and believe me there are more positive stories than negative ones , don't be scared by what you read , don't let that influence your decision . XD

Thanks! Had my procedure this afternoon 1/13/2014 to relieve a fissure. Home now and the surgery anesthesia just wore off... OMG. Used my first pain killer, but what "worries" me, is the seeming inability to pass wind, or BM. Is this natural, "expected" this soon? Any help, or reassurance would be great.

Considering hemorrhoidectomy. I have lichen sclerosis. Any survivors out there?

Thank you so much for your positive words and encouragement! I also have lichen sclerosis which could cause complications, but I am hopeful.

I had my sphincteronomy on Friday (4 days ago) and I am in so much pain. I have not had a bm since before the surgery. I keep trying to "go" but due to the constipation, it opens me up but nothing comes out. Just unimaginable amount of pain. Everytime I try to go, it makes me so much more tender and sore. SO much worse than my fissure. I've been eating fiber, drinking double the dose and twice a day with the fiber drinks. I also take a stool softener three times daily, but I'm pretty sure the codine they prescribed me made me so constipated. I called my doctor today and they told me to use a laxitive which i did 5 hours ago with no luck and to keep taking the codine! I am so upset and am probably going to miss work tomorrow. I work at a Tax Law Firm and with tax season approaching, this isn't good. Furious at my doctor for not telling me there was a possibility of NOT being okay for work the next day... or 5 days later. If you're considering having the surgery, tell you work that you may or may not need a couple days off. And find a good doctor! Mine sucks. I wish I would have gone somewhere else.

You need to ease up on the fiber since without enough water, it can worsen your constipation. Drink, drink and drink more water. You can also try a laxative that pulls water into your colon to soften things up such as Miralax. After my surgery, my doctor put me on a regimen of stool softeners and Lactulose and that worked well for me for the last month and a half. I am moving from the Lactulose to the Miralax and so far so good. If things really get bad, you might need to use a suppository or an enema but be sure that your doctor approves those. Good luck!

H, I am at day 7 post op from hemorrhoidectomy. I am in the same boat. I go to the bathroom in the morning and for 4-5 hours after I am in excruciating pain. Pain meds do nothing. By the afternoon my pain is gone. My doctor says is could be my sphincter spasiming so he gave me some cream to try tomorrow. What was your outcome? How did you get through it?

Dear guest Thank you very much for your words of encouragement. I've had my sphyncterotomy and hemmeroidectomy 12 days ago. After the surgery I stayed the night at the hospital. I managed to void my bladder so I was released with the following recommendations: lots of fluids, stool softeners, high fiber - soft diet and mineral oil. My first bm was three days after the surgery, during which I learned the meanig of the phrase "seeing stars". My eyes went dark and my whole body was shaking, but it was over and right aftdr came a great sensation, one of sweet relese. Since than I have a bm every morning and it gets better every day (still pretty painful, but less than before the surgery). The thing is that after it's over, during the next couple of hours I have a horrible feeling that I'm not 'empty'. I consulted my doctor about this, and apparently this is a misinterpretation of my sensations. Apparently pain in the sphyncter area is often mixed with the sensation of pressure. Since that I changed my morning routine which now starts with Optalgin (I don't know a parallel brand name, this is the name of the medicime ib Israel) and continues with a little wait (as much I can so that the medicine will take effect), a bm and a bath. The pain during the bm is still severe but as I wrote earlier it gets better every day. Once every few days I don't take the medicine before the bm in order to know what's the real situation at the moment. My most important messages are: 1. It DOES get better. 2. Keep in touch with what you feel. Learn to recognize which sensation means what and how to take care of it. I hope this will help someone else

I know it is very lengthy, but if you read it patiently it will definitely help you in some way or the other.

The problem(before surgery)....why am i writing this you will get to know

I cannot remember exactly but it all started somewhere around December 2013.All of a sudden i started having the following problems. The problem which was troubling me the most is ranked 1st and so on...

1.Itching bottom(specially after BM and after continuous sitting due to the nature of my studies)

2.Stinging Pain during BM( Also little pain if i am sitting for a long period of time)

3.Blood IN stools - this is how i came to know that something was wrong. The amount of blood was so small(as small as tiny spots here and there) i had to use flashlight in my mobile to check it .It was sort of mixed in stools but would not at all mix with water.

4.Prolapsing Hemorrhoid(i thought...but it was something else) - It would occasionaly feel it prolapsing when i wiped and sometimes it would automatically go and sometimes i would have to push it with finger.

Visits to doctors.

1. A general surgeon- He told me i have anal fissure and internal hemorrhoids. He wrote me laxatives, painkillers and an ointment(topical anasthesia) and told me to have sitz bath.He

It did not seem to help.Sitz bath would give relief for about an hour or two...but again the itching would return which was very annoying since i am a 20 y/o Chartered Accountant student and have to study like 12-15 hours a day.Besides sitz bath consumed a lot of time.I visited him again to say it wasn’t helping. He then suggested surgery

In addition to this during this period(7-8 months) i tried out many home remedies too but I DID NOT WANT TO LIVE WITH IT AND WANTED PERMANENT SOLUTION  and i decided that after my examinations will get over i will undergo surgery as it will permanently solve it.

2.Another general surgeon(after exams were over) – It was 1st july 2014.Another surgeon on recommendation of my family doctor(he thought this one was better).Besides I also wanted to have a second opinion

He checked me and said I Have an ANAL PAPILLA(it wasn’t the roids but the papilla that was prolapsing), internal roids, and fissure. He too gave me meds and said my condition was LESS THAN MODERATE…and I should manage it with meds.YOU DO NOT NEED SURGERY

I tried that for a week, very impatiently as I had about a month of holidays left before I have to absolutely get back to my routine. I KNEW THIS WAS MY ONLY CHANCE.

After trying that for a week I came back and told him my decision to have surgery.Yes, my family was against, kept saying about the complications but I did not listen. After all only I knew how much trouble I had to go through.

I HAD THE SURGERY( STAPLED HEMORRHOIDECTOMY, ANAL STRETCH, EXCISION OF ANAL PAPILLA.)

AFTER THE SURGERY

WEEK 1. Well!I still remember every bit of it. It was worse than hell.I had got a major problems… worse than problem I actually had. I woke up every morning with yellow stains in my underwear. It was stool.(FECAL INCONTINENCE) I would also have a sudden urgency to have BM.I googled this problem and this was when I came to know about this website and all the complications which could arise after surgery.

The bowel movements were bloody and very painful. The pain would not go even after having sitz bath after the BM. I mixed betadine(a microbicidal anticeptic solution) in my sitz bath to help with the healing and protection against infection.

I also suspected narrowing of stools and difficulty in expelling stools. They would be like stuck in my anal canal and come out after lot of straining.(ANAL STENOSIS).

I was losing all hope as I read that problems like fecal incontinence and anal stenosis cannot be easily cured.

Fortunately by the end of the week the problem of soiling my underwear went away. But I wasn’t sure

FOLLOW UP WITH SURGEON- he checked me and said I was doing well i.e. as expected. When I told him about fecal leakage – “It is the topical anesthesia(gel) mixing with some stool in the rectum which is dripping”.He told me to use the gel only before BM, not after Bm.

When I told him about narrowing of stools and stools stuck– “There is no narrowing.Drink plenty of water. Increase intake of laxatives”. I WASN’T CONVINCED ON THIS as I was already having high fibre diet, plenty of water and was sure that stools that were narrow(as pencil) were easier to expel. But as their diameter increased they got stuck.

He wasn’t happy with my attitude. He thought I was too much anxious ,arguing, and full of negativity as I was not appreciating anything.

WEEK 2

It seems that he was right. Leakage had stopped once I stopped applying anesthesia gel after bm.

Pain and bleeding was gradually decreasing and by the end of week there was no bleeding but some pain(tolearable)

But still stool were coming slowly and sometimes they were stuck. But I kept assuring myself…”No, you don’t have anal stenosis.Trust the doctor. It will be alright”

But a new problem had arisen right at the start of week. I noticed that my anus was becoming moist and a drop or two of white stains on my underwear every 5-6 hours, the moisture did smell like stool(although I did not change). This was causing me lot of itching.I put a small piece of cotton between my butt cheeks to help with itching as it trapped the moisture.

FOLLOW UP WITH SURGEON:

He heard all the above problems, checked me and said these exact words “IT CANNOT BE BETTER,95% wounds have healed”

I kept arguing stools are narrow, they get stuck – ”The problem is in your head. Stop thinking from your anus, think from your brain”. He was annoyed with me

I told him about itching and moisture - “It will subside don’t worry”

On my way back home I was in a dilemma. These thoughts had gripped my mind :-

1.Maybe he screwed up something and now hiding it by saying problem is in my head.

2.I should trust the doctor , it is a routine surgery and he is very experienced. And if something was wrong why would he hide.

WEEK 3

Negligible pain.

Moisture and white stains totally subsided. But not the itching(I STILL HAVE THE ITCHING), although it has reduced.

Stools were no longer being stuck. PHEW!!. . ANAL STENOSIS

But wait a minute I started seeing blood again.SAME OLD STORY.Tiny spots of blood mixed in stools.I became very worried. For once I even thought that source of blood was intestine or something. That wasn’t true.

WEEK 4.

It was more or less the same as week 3.During this week I attended a 5 day training also (7 hours of sitting).

FOLLOW UP with doctor-

I did not want to go to the same doctor.I knew what his answer would be.So to be doubly sure I went to a new surgeon.

I told problems. Blood, Itching, Little pain. He said I was totally normal. Some wounds have not healed that is the cause of blood. He prescribed me another antiseptic gel ‘Silverkind nanofine gel’. Said “ENJOY LIFE,NOTHING IS WRONG”

I WAS VERY HAPPY.I became doubly sure I am fine.

WEEK 5:

As I had hoped, blood did stop by the end of week 5. YAY!!

But itching was like a stubborn child. Not going away.

Bowel Movements had become very smooth.

WEEK 6(present week)

Itching…Itching…Itching…Why is it not going?

Trust me from week 1 I was waiting to post my story.I thought I would post when I will be totally alright. But I don’t know when this itching will go so I couldn’t wait any longer. But there is a belief that I will be totally alright soon.

The purpose of my story was not only to share how I battled in the recovery period but to tell you guys what all problems you might face and to motivate you.

The important thing is to HANG IN THERE!IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS!BUT ONE FINE DAY YOU WILL BE TOTALLY ALRIGHT!

Don’t ever lose hope due to the post operation problems and  don’t regret the decision of having the surgery. NOBODY DESERVES TO LIVE IN PAIN!

Anyway I wish you a speedy recovery. I am sure my story in some way or the other it will help you.

And sorry, I know it is very long and might be boring.

Two weeks ago I had a sphincterotomy, fissurectomy, and hemorrhoidectomy. Prior to surgery I had a hemorrhoid with a blood clot in it that was removed. Unfortunately, the cut did not heal, causing my bm to be EXTREMELY painful. (To the point that I needed to take pain killers after.) Now that's it's two weeks after the surgery, it was one of the best decisions I made. From hospital check in to check out, total time was about 4 hrs. (My surgeon specialized in colon and rectal surgery for over 15 years so I had full confidence in his ability ... Especially since I've read that incontinence - loose bowels - can result from the surgery.) After the surgery, I was given a narcotic pain killer and was told to take a fiber supplement, increase fiber in my diet, take sitz baths - 3 a day, and take mineral oil. I finally had my first bm about 2 days after my surgery ... Which I was dreading. To my surprise, it was not bad at all. Some pain and blood, but no where close to the pain I felt before. (Also, you shouldn't use toilet paper, but instead something softer like wet wipes.) For the first 3 days I took pain killers on schedule, but I made sure I increased fiber so I wouldn't get constipated. After the first few days I only took them as needed .. Which was after my bowel movement. Now ... Which I started doing probably a week after my surgery ... I am having bm's without taking pain medication. There may be some discomfort but it's more of stretching. So two weeks out ... bm are regular and only with very little discomfort, if any at all. I'm still very conscious of what I'm eating to make sure it's high in fiber, and still taking a fiber supplement. I have noticed that i'm also very tired, which I think is my body's way of telling me to rest so it can heal. My anus also itches a lot, but as the wound heals, that is expected. I usually sit in a warm bath to soothe it. All in all ... I would recommend getting the surgery. After having it, I wish I would have done it sooner rather than waiting 3 months to see if it heals on it own. Also, from reading some of the posts, I would say make sure you find a great surgeon that specializes in this surgery and colon/rectal issues. Lastly, make sure you increase your fiber as much as possible. Since my surgery, in pretty much only eating warm chicken soup full of vegetables, beans, and vegetables ... If it isn't high in fiber, I'm not eating it. Good luck to anyone having it done in the future.

Oh yeah, make sure you drink plenty of water since your fiber intake has increased.
