Hi
Im 20 yrs old. And just had tonsillectomy and my adenoids removed. I'm currently on day 6. And every day so far has been a pain. The whole time.
I went in for surgery and got anesthesia. I woke up in a panic- turns out my body cannot handle it well. I started having these seizures/shakes even in my sleep for 3 days. It got better. Yay
The shakes werent that bad- it just panicked my mom. I also struggled to breathe due to the swelling. I tell them that i cant breathe and they say i can breathe and no one takes the swelling into account- it blocked my airway. My mom is a superhero- she seeds i cant breathe as well and in the end i had an oxygen mask.
I slept overnight which is great cause the meds are better there in hospital.
I have not been eating well due to the difficulty swallowing. Let me tell you, it sucks, alot. So much pain, i cant sleep well, i wake up every few hours and my throat feels like the dessert in egypt- dry.
But drinking loads of fluids help. Avoid fat type foods- bloody hell i had such bad heart burn and i only ate avocado. My docter recommended me drinking coke, both good and bad idea. The gas boils on the throat and helps the weird white scabs somehow. but the gas stayed in my body and for a whole bloody day had been in so much pain-my parents tried to get me to burp. This was day 4. And im on day 6 now.
I wish i knew what to expect besides "ooh at your age, its gonna be very painful".
I cant speak well either- not sure why. Today was the day i could speak clearly (not much). I tried to somehow use sign to tell them what i want. I am gonna be honest- i have been constipated since surgery.
Ice is your friend. Ice cream= mucus=more painful swallowing.
Jello is great. Papaya too. Avoid bananas- nurses said it makes your throat burn more.
My ears hurt as well as my face(jaw mostly).
People encourage you to eat soft foods for 1st week- today i tried some soft steak, it was a mistake- my throat now hurts worse than yesterday. Though i was more adventurous and not as tired as the days before.
They say this will be better in the long run- well 'they' suck for the next 2 weeks. I am writing this thinking that i should not have done the surgery. But alas it is done and all i can do is take it one day at a time.

Hi Everyone! I am a 34 year old woman and I just had both my tonsils and adenoids removed 3 days ago.

The first 2 days weren't so bad, as the anesthesia and high doses of pain meds were still in full effect.
Today, on the other hand has been awful. I have projectile vomited very acidic water 3 different times today. I'm assuming that happened because I have no food in my body, only water and the prescribed oxycodone liquid plus liquid Tylenol for the in between times of pain.

After my first vomiting earlier today I became very fearful of taking anything so I completely cut out the tylenol(it is very acidic) and went over 9 hours without the oxycodone. That was a mistake!!
I'm drinking plenty of cold water and an occasional sip of coconut water here and there and back to taking the oxycodone every 4 hours.
I puréed some broccoli cheddar soup and managed to keep it down but only ate about 1/8 cup.

So far the best tips are:
1.) Set alarms about every 30-40 minutes to have a drink. (A dry throat is a one way ticket to agony)
2.) Sleep sitting up as much as possible. (A swollen uvula feels like your choking on a piece of gauze abs laying down makes it 10,000 times worse!)
3.) A humidifier is your best friend.
4.) Stay on top of your prescribed meds. Trust me.
5.) Keep your mouth clean. I've been brushing my teeth about 6-10 times a day and switching with a rinse specifically for dry mouth. The doc actually told me no gargling but I was okay to swish.
6.) Don't even try to blow your nose. It was the first thing I wanted to do after waking up from surgery and once I was allowed to get up and go to the bathroom on my own I tried to blow my nose. I physically couldn't do it. It wasn't that it hurt it just wouldn't work. I can't explain it but don't even try.
7.) Avoid dairy! Everyone was like "oh yay you get to eat ice cream and pudding all day!" WRONG!! Doc told me to avoid dairy for the first few days as dairy produces phlegm and the last thing you need is to a phlegm coated throat as you're trying to heal.
8.) Avoid citrus. I, like a common fool, decided a lime Popsicle would be a swell idea. NOPE. One bite and it was burning the back of my throat Iike hot coals. Stick to the least acidic Popsicle flavors. What those flavors are? Damned if I know.
9.) Chicken soup is a bad choice. I made a package of noodle soup that has the chicken flavored bouillon powder. Then puréed it in the blender. It taste good and was okay for about the first 5 minutes, then it was hell. Too much SALT! Salt will dry out your throat BIG TIME. I actually think they salty broth contributed to my multiple acid pukes of the day.
10.) DRINK DRINK DRINK! I know that is number 1 as well but I can't stress it enough. No mater how bad it hurts just keep drinking that water. It will be the difference between tolerable pain and wanting to fling your self out the window.

Hi! I’m 17 years old and I’m on Day 5 of post operation. I was prescribed 5 MG oxicodone and was told to take 1000 MG Tylenol with it and rotating with 800 MG ibuprofen every 3 hours. I ran out of Oxy today and I am in pain so bad I cried to the point where I threw up and got light headed. This is the worst process ever. I’m so hungry and so I ordered Chinese food only to find out I have no pain meds so I can’t eat it. I can barley drink water or even swallow. I’ve been constipated for a week now and my stomach hurts so much more. I’m so tired I just wanna sleep but the pain is preventing me too. Any tips? Hi there, I feel your pain...literally!!! I am day 8 post op and I have to say that today is the first day I have started to feel better. My ears and face were hurting so much that I went back to my doctor who gave me Naproxen and a second lot of antibiotics as apparently I have a viral infection/ear infection. My ears were also blocked for a few days and I couldn't hear a thing. I can honestly say that Naproxen is the only thing that has really worked and I wish id had it sooner. I was taking paracetamol, Ibuprofen and codeine. A good tip is rinse and gargle your mouth and throat with dissoluble aspirin, it numbs everything!!!!! Use it as much as you want just don't swallow it...apparently you shouldn't take it while using ibuprofen but I did for a few days because the pain was so bad!!! I've eaten bits and pieces over the last few days and am starving but every-time I try to eat or drink anything I produce so much saliva that I have to spit it out. As for the constipation, I actually thought I was going to die, it was that bad, to the point where I had to take a hot bath and try to poo in there (disgusting I know), anyway it didn't happen so I took senna which cleared it through eventually. Every day I feel a little better and I just keep thinking "not long now and I'll be back to normal". I had mine done due to sleep apnea issues but when they took them out they said that they were chronically infected inside, which couldn't be seen from the outside. I'm consoling myself with that fact that my health will significantly improve once I'm all healed and i've made it to day 8 now so things can only get better...I hope!!!!

Best trick ever is to chew gum. It opens up the Eustachian tube. If not the pressure builds from fluid in your sinuses, jaw line and inner ear. Go to a party supply store and get the small ice cube trays so you can have cups full of them and like others say, stay ahead of the pain meds by alternating tylenol, ibuprofen and the strong prescribed pain med. No matter how painful, continue to drink lots of water. Day two I ate pastene with 1/2 chicken bouillon and an egg whipped in it. Best to eat 20 minutes after taking prescribed pain med. Do not stop taking pain med for at least 8 days. The pain was the 4 days in when I tried to be a tough guy and stop the pain meds. Good luck. I had it done at age 40. It was painful but worth it.
