I guess I would consider myself a pretty athletic person, I excell at cycling, rock climbing and mountain hiking but, within 5 minutes of starting to run, I feel like my chest is gong to explode and my entire body feels miserable. What is this? am i not breathing properly? I hate the fact that I can't run and I've made it my next challenge. I would greatly appreciate any advice!

Can you describe the feeling in your chest a bit more detailed? If you also feel a painfully pressure on your chest mostly to the left it is possible that the blood flow in your heart isn't functioning optimal. To take no risk I would advise you to go and see a doctor and describe your problems and probably he will let you do a stress test for your heart in a hospital, this is nothing scary. You must sit on an ergometer en bike as hard and as long if you can, during the excercise an ECG is made.
Remember chest pain and other complaints in the heart region should always be taken seriously.

I agree with p1243. But I hope there is nothing serious out there.
That's how you start running - 7 minutes on day 1, 8 on day 2 and so on... There is no rush. You have to breath through your nose, not with your mouth, when it is cold out. Also, first few minutes of running outside usually hits you pretty hard because of temperature change, fresh air, etc. Try running on the treadmill first and then you can take it outside. I hope things will work out for you. Good luck!
