Hi Ann May,

Salivary gland is responsible for production of saliva. It is really unknown why salivary stones are formed but what is known is that they are made from calcium.

The main symptom of the salivary stones is then salivary duct is blocked and the saliva is not able to come out. This is then causing pain and swelling of the gland. Usually pain and swelling would go away after few hours. The treatment is consisted of several methods. Gentle probing into the gland is one option. This can sometimes free the stone and it will fall in to the mouth. Another one is small operation for drastic case only.

I hope that this was helpful in any way.
