This is the most useful thing I’ve seen so far. I almost died last night. How long does it take for the pain to go. I can’t sit on the toilet, it feels like my vagina wants to tear.

Hey Ladies, I've had this identical pain syndrome on and off for many years now, and, after a complete hysterectomy in 2000 (for other reasons entirely), I can guarantee you that this pain is NOT caused by either uterine or ovarian problems, since I still have it occasionally. But, I can tell you this: no physician is likely to either identify the cause or offer you any real relief, except, perhaps, pain medication. However, the woman who mentioned the constipation is on the right track. So, I will offer what I have learned over the years, to add to her suggestions. First, do not have sex when you are extremely full from a heavy meal, especially if you have had either constipation or diarrhea recently, and, most especially, if your anus or lower rectum is sore (from hemorrhoids, too much wiping, etc). Plain old gas does not generally bring on this pain syndrome, but sex after a heavy meal, combined with already irritated intestines (from a virus, diarrhea, constipation, even overeating, etc.), especially when your anus or lower rectum is sore or irritated, will do it every time. And, once you get the pain, do not have vaginal sex for at least two days! Also, when the pain is at its worst, if you can sit on the toilet and either pass gas or have a bowel movement, the pain will subside afterwards. Yes, doing either of these things will hurt like hell, but they will help end the pain. Once you have done this, lie quietly in the position that you find the most comfortable until the pain subsides (usually within the hour). So, save your money! I am not a physician, but, from my experience I would suggest that you only need to see your doctor if you have this pain syndrome combined with other symptoms (e.g., unusual, or foul-smelling, vaginal discharge; or black, tarry stools; or extremely prolonged episodes of pain; or pain accompanied by fever; or pain that could be from an organ, including the appendix; or pain accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea that is not caused by a vasovagal reaction, which is itself caused by the pain; or if you have this pain syndrome every time you have vaginal sex; etc.), or if you need prescription pain medications. I am still researching the precise mechanism behind the pain, and I will update you if I discover it. But, in the meantime, I think that I have found the combination that is the most likely to result in the pain, and, avoiding sex under the set of circumstances mentioned above has kept me pain free after vaginal sex for a long time now. Good luck! This pain is truly miserable!

For the last few years, I’ve read post similar to yours in search of answers. Unfortunately, reading multiple posts no one has received a clear diagnosis. I noticed you didn’t post if your pain occurred days before your period. Most women experience it during that period of time. Most of us were prescribed Naproxen, which the pain laughs at. Although I don’t have an answer, i wanted you to know you are not alone nor are you crazy (several people have posted that their doctor didn’t believe them). My doctor ran a battery of test, but nothing. I have more test today, because the pain is becoming more severe.

The problem with these message boards is that there is no follow up, hence it's all just conjecture. I would love for someone to just post an update!

Endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum (the partition between vagina and rectum) could cause deep pain during intercourse that is relieved by passing gas. Also - endo can cause adhesions that tether your anterior rectum to the back of your cervix, so the sex pain may be there regardless of where you are in your cycle. Finally - rectovaginal endo would still be present after hysterectomy (because it's behind the vagina/in front of the rectum).

Of note: Diagnosis is hard -- physical exam, transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic MRI are usually negative. They need to do a laparoscopy (key hole surgery) - and even then it may not be found (skill of surgeon important there). If you come in without "traditional" symptoms, then they may not entertain this as a diagnosis.

Yes!!!! Omg!!! That makes so much sense!!!!! I was experiencing the same thing last night and I was constipated and that I had a feeling it had something to do with the constipation. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

I have this exact pain after sex once in awhile. It is very painful for about 3 or 4 hours after and I feel exhausted for the great of the day with mild pain. I would like to know what causes this also.

I get this when my ulcerative colitis is acting up. Well meaning after vagunal intercourse anyways. Never thought of the being linked until i finally asked my gi dr about it when i had a flare up and realized it could be linked she said yes.

Could just be a muscle spasm in the area which is making it difficult to pass gas. The build up of gas can cause sharp pains as well. Should check with a doctor if this is persistent
