I have a similar problem. I wonder if I am biting my tongue and the pain wakes me. I too was wondering about neck vertebrae problems I have.

Have there been any answers to this. This thread is a year old. I have the same thing and it's very painful. It seems each time it happens it lasts a little longer. Is there anyone who monitors these posts that can see if there has been an answer or solution?

I experience this as well. Tonight was the worst, happens when I am about to fall asleep. I have been stressed over the last few days and didn't get good sleep for days. The answer seems to me stress and lack of sleep.

Another person with the same undiagnosed symptoms here. I'm a medical Dr actually and tbh I'm not finding anything in the literature so I'm pretty sure most drs are gonna have a stab in the dark here and guess. It's very interesting though, if I can get to the bottom of it I'll let the thread know.

Symptoms seem to be:

Pain in the left or right mid tongue
Occurs on awakening from sleep or potentially wakes one from sleep
Usually subsides within seconds no more than 30
Can happen sporadically
No definitive prompts or relieving factors

Massaging the tongue helps to make the pain go unless its just coincidental.

I am another one with these symptoms of an acute, stabbing pain in the tongue close to morning which lasts only for a few seconds but hurts like hell. It actually causes me to cry out sometimes as it is so painful and unexpected. It can happen for a few mornings in a row and then, perhaps, nothing for a week or so but it always comes back. Once I experience this pain I always end up with some nasty ulcers on the side of my tongue so my tongue continues to be sore all day. I have issues with my spine - arthritis and sciatica and I also take some fairly potent medications relating to my mental health so I don't know if any of these things might be connected with the pain. I find it staggering that there is really nobody who can come up with a definitive diagnosis for this problem as this would possibly lead to a potential treatment for this horrendous problem. I can't believe that so many people have drawn a blank when they have told their doctor about this. I am sort of disinclined to mention it to my doctor because of what I've read. Don't want him to think I'm an even bigger nut than he already thinks :-) It is really becoming unbearable. I have also noticed that I am inclined to drool at night (gross I know) a lot, particularly since the tongue 'shocks' began.

I had the same thing happened to me this morning just before I wake up .
add to that I noticed redness in front of my tongue in the same spot.

This is my second post. In the beginning the tongue "shocks" as they have been called were everynight sometime 4-7 times. It had created what felt like callouses on both sides of my tongue.
Whats new is that I've been taking Turmeric Curcumin with black peppercorns everyday to help alleviate my arthritis pain, which for me its working great. BUT what I noticed is the tongue shocks were gone for a long time. The callouses even went away. I had one 3 days ago but although the pain in the tongue was nasty it was no where near the pain it use to cause. Granted this could just be a coincidence but I'll take any kind of relieve I can get besides my mood is great my bp is down and my feet, ankles and knees dont hurt so bad.

It was a coincidence. The tongue shocks are back with a vengence. They no longer hit on just the side of the tongue but through the top down now too. I have lower my potassium and B2 dosages. I'm returning to the original dosages. I will keep updating.

I returned to the original dosage of 297mg of potassium. Not one tongue shock has occurred. The B2 i take 100mg every other day. Im a happy camper now.

I've had the same issue. It gets a lot worse when I'm under the weather / fighting a bug or stressed. I'm currently pregnant and getting it a lot, along with many ulcers on my tongue that make it painful to talk, eat etc. Apparently it can be related to changes in hormones. I'm also waking up with an extremely dry tongue at the momemt so think dehydration is also cause (despite drinking approx 6 pints of water during the day and 2 at night!) I used to find red wine causes it too - potentially sulphites or associated dehydration. Am going to apply anbesol (antiseptic /anaesthetic) before bed to see if it relieves symptoms. I've found applying tea tree oil directly to the ulcers is most effective at getting rid of them but doesn't stop recurrence. It's also not advised to apply tea tree oil undiluted or internally so I'm trying to avoid doing that!!

It may just be a coincidense but since I take one 99mg potassium in the morning and 2 after the dinner meal, I have not had any tongue shocks. I'm just happy its working for me. Hope it works for you. Took a few days I think.
