Sorry to break the chain, but I'm in my late teens and have this too. I get burning/stabbing painst in the sides of my tongue occasionally when I wake up. I also have slight vitamin D deficiency and a back problem that shouldn't be related to it. Occasionally I get numbness and tingling in my hands and face but I believe that is only due to extra oxygen/caffeine. Maybe it has something to do with dry tongues or it could be a nerve issue. Hope you guys find out something, and hopefully it's just dry mouth.

Pretty sure it's from grinding teeth. You're not biting your tongue, but moving your jaw in such a way that it bumps a nerve that connects to the tongue. That's why for most, it's during sleep or just as you're about to sleep.

I'm not a doctor, but it would seem incredibly logical. Wisdom teeth can push on it, moving your jaw wierd alcna trigger it, or possibly sinus or neck issues.

Let your doctor know, maybe this can give them an idea of where to start.

My doctor prescribed iron tablets and vitamin B for the sharp pain on tongue. Lack of those in a blood test.

I just told my wife the exact same symptoms are happening to me. When I am sleeping I will be jolted with sharp pain on right side of tongue. I take pain meds, my wife thinks that is the cause? (Pain meds are for herniated discs)

I've had this problem as well. I have no idea what causes it but gargling salt water help drastically. It happened for the first time this morning.

I have the same exact symptoms. Every now and then I get a sharp, electric like pain, in my tongue that lasts for a few seconds. It is incredibly painful. Sometimes it feels like the pain occurs in a short line through the tongue. The pain could be described as taking a needle and stabbing the toungue or biting your tongue. It almost always happens while falling asleep or half asleep but sometimes can happen while awake.

The diagnosis for this problem is "glossopharyngeal neuralgia". It is from a nerve in the neck being pressured by a blood vessel, or a tumor. The treatment is medication such as Gabapentin or surgery to relieve the pressure on the nerve or the tumor. This diagnosis has been mentioned several times throughout this thread but I still see people commenting that they don't know what it is....it is "glossopharyngeal neuralgia".

I too have this same exact problem as I’m falling asleep ... it’s FU$@ing SEVERE PAIN. last night felt like a vein popped. Sometimes fells like I bite it or it’s being electrocuted. I saw a ear throat and nose doctor about a month ago and she say nothing wrong. I’m a 30-year-old male, decent health. I don’t understand what this pain is coming from.

I have the same sharp, shooting pain as described by people on this thread - I found this....
https://www.mayfieldclinic.com/PE-Glossopharyngeal.HTM - it's a site talking about something called Glossopharyngael, and sounds pretty spot-on.

Maybe sleep apnea causes a lack of oxygen, and the tongue tingles, or maybe sleep apnea causes a lack of oxygen and it causes you to stick out your tongue, and after you stick out your tongue and get some air you wake up and your tongue is asleep. Or maybe sleep apnea causes you to have lack of oxygen, and. You then stick out your tongue, and then a spider comes to feed and bites your tongue. But I would not be suprised if it actually does have something to do with your neck because my neck is bad and it seems like that had something to do with it for me. I had this happen last night, and it hurt so bad I woke up yelling. Never had it happen before. Wierd.
