Well, I'm glad I'm not alone in this... Although we seem short of an actual diagnosis, I'm happy to read about the Vitamin C remedy! Thank you very much for having posted that, and I will be trying it as soon as I find myself a chewable organic-sourced vitamin-c supplement. So far the only I've seen are synthetic vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
I'm 31 - I've had this problem since my early 20's as far as I can remember. I never drank much, so all of my reactions were most times directly set off from foods, some other times - oddly enough - only drinking water does it too! I'm a smoker, as well - and the reason I chose to mention this is because of the fact that a lot of times, I find it's directly following having smoked a few cigarettes after not having anything to drink for a while. The first thing I drink, or even eat, might very well set off one of these shooting pains on both sides of my face - right below the jaw bone all the way up to the bottom of my ears.
I found myself a remedy that hasn't failed me yet - I brush my teeth as soon as I feel it coming on. Not only my teeth, but my tongue as well - as I figured it might be a chemical reaction between my taste buds and the food/drink/cigs. I find that, as soon as I brush my tongue with mint toothpaste - the pain evaporates instantly!! I suggest this to anyone, as I truly believe it can't hurt to try this at home. :-)

Can anyone speak to the efficacy of the vitamin C solution? I thought that it would work but I haven't tried it yet. Can anyone enlighten me? I'd like to hear if it's working!

Last night I was at a pizza joint and had 2 glasses of Chardonnay with my pizza. I experienced a sharp pain in both of my jaws, right below my ears. This is a pain that I have experienced roughly 15 or so times in my life, and I have only noticed it when drinking alcohol. I am a wine lover and primarily drink red wine. I haven't fully paid attention to what types of alcohol are causing the pain.
The pain itself is very short-lived and not too bothersome. I am a fairly regular drinker...wine with dinner a couple times a week and wine or cocktails on the weekends with friends...and I only get this reaction every once in a while.
I decided to look up the symptom just to make sure it wasn't anything serious. I'm shocked to find so many people with the same puzzling question and no real answer. It's not necessarily that I'm looking for a pain remedy, as this happens so infrequently. I just want to make sure this isn't an indication of something I should be worried about.

Just had this happen... decided to find out what was causing it...
Here's my log:
1. I grilled pork chops and pineapples and had a beer (bud light from a kegerator) while grilling
2. The wife made a spinach-leaf salad with italian light dressing.
3. Came in and ate the dinner, refilled the beer (beer #2) as well.
4. Went into the garage and spray-painted some primer on a few boards for a project I am doing.
5. Came upstairs and got on the computer to check my e-mail.
6. Took a sip from my beer (still beer #2), and jaw pains started exactly as previously described:
Pain just below the ears, along the jawline, near the glands. Feels like a charlie-horse - a dry, atrophe of the muscles/tendons...
It's painful, but not enough to be dabilitating. Sharp, shooting pains that linger for many minutes...

My boyfriend and I had this happen...first at a mexican restaurant where I had a margarita...then at another restaurant where he had a hot chocolate with tequila. We narrowed it down to the only thing in common...tequila. Maybe just the cheap stuff?

The disorder relating to the salivary glands and ducts blocked by stones is called Sialolithiasis. See the Wikipedia article, and scary pictures of the stones, here:
I just experienced this pain when I took the last gulp of red wine after finishing dinner. I don't recall specifically experiencing this before but it wasn't entirely unfamiliar as though it happened in the past but the specific event doesn't stand out in my memory. I will also note that I ran out of Vitamin C and multivitamins about 3 weeks ago (I only like the brands I get at home so haven't repurchased yet), but still have calcium pills.
I've taken warm tea and mango juice to make the pain go away. Only faint residual pain is left.

I am so happy I found this site! I've gotten this sharp jaw pain for years, especially after drinking any kind of wine. But today I got it for no apparent reason, though I do have the flu. So I decided to try the apple juice trick, and within seconds the pain went away completely, and hasn't come back. I'm blown away, and thank all of you for the recommendation. The pain gets quite severe, so it's wonderful to know there's a solution. I can't believe how well this worked :-D .

Hi All...
I have had this problem for a few years now. Wine or beer bring it on for me. Was told possibly sulfites may have something to do with it but I dont think there are sulfites in beer. (?) Anywho... I think the vitamin c trick may work as a by product. I have found that if I am getting the pain, I take about a teaspoon of lemon juice and swish it around my ENTIRE mouth for a few seconds and spit and rinse (I dont wanna have the added acid in my stomach...). It hurts like HELL for about 3 seconds, kinda "pops" the glands or whatever (I call it a "reset") and then all is right in the world again. It doesnt ALWAYS happen to me, and I cant pinpoint any particular brand or type of beer or wine. Sometimes it doesnt happen at all. I think the sourness of the ascorbic acid that is vitamin c may be doing the same "extreme sour" gig that my lemon juice trick does. Give it a go and let me know what You all think!

Omg, I've had this problem for years. It seemed though that it happened after I had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 22. I am a social drinker but the pain has ruined the social experience. I used to be a heavy Corona drinker and have switched back and forth between wines and hard liquors but the problem always returns. It doesn't happen all the time. I just had 3 kokanees the other day and never had a problem but just last night I had one Corona and I about killed myself. I don't swell or anything but feel like my jaw is being zapped. I always thought that it could possibly be the silver fillings in my teeth reacted with the salts but figured since it happened with other alcoholic beverages that, that wasn't the problem. It never happens with soda or water.
I will try the Vitamic C or lemon juice. I really hope this works. I will love the World Wide Web forever!!

Wow, this is cool because no one else I know has had this problem and I really thought it was just me! I'm going out to buy some chewable vitamin c tabs now that I've read this.
The thing I really don't understand is why it only happens occasionally. If I drink 10 times a month, I'll only get this pain about once during that period. Always with alcohol, never anything else. And it doesn't matter what kind of beer, liquor or wine.
How do you know if you have stones? Other than this and some mild gingivitis I don't have any other oral problems.

wow, I'm sooo happy to see that so many other people feel this excruciating pain as well. That sounded wrong. I don't enjoy that you all have to go through this as well, but I'm happy to know that I'm not alone. I literally have been reading these posts for about an hour, and it's really unreal that doctors are clueless as to what this is. I'm hoping this means its nothing to worry about. That said, it seems to me that this kind of pain can't be great. I have also only experienced it sporadically, coming on once a month or so, and it seems to always occur when I'm drinking a beer, wine or liquor with a meal. I NEVER leave alcohol in my glass, because I hate to waste, but last night I was in a really nice restaurant in paris, and couldnt drink more than half of my over-priced beer because of the pain! That's when I finally decided to google this. I guess I'll go out and buy myself a tub of vitamin-c, but I really wish someone could show their doctor this site and the pages and pages of posts on it. We should all write a book or something. Please email me if anyone has any more info on this, thanks!~

I have this exact same problem as well, all the described symptoms, down to a T. I just had the pain for the umpteenth time in the last couple weeks and so I looked it up, and tried the vitamin C thing. Half a scoop of Tang was all it took for me! The first drink caused a sharp pain and then it just went away. I drank some more to confirm that it hadn't just faded for a second, and sure enough it was gone. It's been like 10 minutes and no pain, and it had been there for like 30 minutes. SWEET! Thx all.

Wow, thought I was the only one in the world with this problem, today I had a couple of beer before the pain started. It feels like needles stabbing my jaw line beneath my ear last only about ten minutes but very painful, please find a cure, and don't say stop drinking cause that ain't going to happen

I've had this for over a decade as well, never known what it was. Same symptoms: sharp pains in the jaw and below the ear after drinking... though honestly, not always with alcohol, sometimes soda or tea. Happens maybe once a month even though I drink significantly more often than that.
I was extremely skeptical of the "Vitamin C trick" though I just downed two gulps of a Gatorade with Vitamin C in it and, while the gulps were excruciatingly painful, the symptoms are completely gone now. I know this isn't a placebo as I've certainly tried drinking a ton of water and stuff in the past thinking I was maybe dehydrated without receiving the same kind of response.
Honestly, I'm still skeptical of it, but I'm definitely going to continue to try it.
For what it's worth: I've never had a cavity, and thus no fillings or whatever, though I did have my wisdom teeth taken out at 15. I don't really recall when this started, but it could have been around then. Also, I've never had any "stones" or anything strange like that. Certainly seems glandular.
I'll continue the Vitamin C thing, and if it continues to work then I'll post here again in a few months.
