yes for me its not the alcohol thats causes the jaw ache, I'm pretty sure that its the sushi aspect of it. Very odd, it's happened in the past after consuming sushi. Maybe it's some type of reaction to the raw fish, wonder if this could be scientifically proven somehow.. ?

K I'm sure everyone is long gone from this topic, but I just found it while this was happening to me and it's happened to me many times in the past. After reading this I went and took a Vitamin C capsule and the pain was gone within a minute. I cannot believe that a pain so intense could just go away that quickly, and I can't express how grateful I am to have found this.

Thank you all!

i get the pain whenever i eat anything... it starts as soon as i bite into some food but goes away pretty quick.  i dont really drink but i get it all the time and its really annoying, sometimes ridiculously painful.  its generally more painful if im eating something thats more sugary or sharper/greater in taste.

Been having the sharp jaw pains but only with alcohol.  Usually Tequila or hard liquor, and only as the "buzz" was wearing off.  Was talking with one of my beer nerd friends and he said it sounded like I was alergic to the alkali. This vitamin "C" solution jibes with what little I know of acids, that some counteract each other.  Tannins also strike a note as some beers make my mouth itch, and stuff up my sinuses, and leave a taste a while after drinking like old wet rotten wood.  Not that I've ever eaten any.  And then I was reminded of a old apartment swimming pool that had tons of leaves in it and the water left me with the same taste.  Found out later the PH was extreme.

I have also been getting this stabbing pain that I would describe as coming from underneath my tounge as well as right underneath my jawline near my throat.  I believe that it is a glandular pain.  I used to get something I called blocked saliva glands as a kid and my mom also got them.  Doctors never could really give us an answer as to what to do when this happened to us.  They were terrible and our saliva glands would fill up with puss/saliva and you could visibly see them puffing up under our skin on our face just below our ears.  I would always get mine on the left side.  Now, instead of getting those I get this.  It especially happens when I drink wine but it also happens with the first thing I eat or drink on an empty stomach.  I think that it has to do with me salivating.  Even before I eat something if I start thinking about eating and salivating at the idea of eating something yummy the pain will start.  I won't even bother going to the doctor about this because they were never helpful with my saliva gland blockages because doctor's won't know what we are talking about.  It's so annoying.  They look at you like you are crazy.  At least this new gland pain only lasts a few seconds usually.  The blocked saliva glands would last about a week and I would refuse to eat solids because it hurt so freaking bad I would rather starve.  This pain reminds me of that pain so that's why I wanted to post.  In my opinion it has to do with saliva glands since I've always had issues with mine so this is no surprise to me.  Will try the Vitamin C trick though since I'm not going to quit eating and drinking.

I have had this same pain for 20+ years and noticed that it came on when I drank chardonnay wine. I stay away from all white wines. I can drink champagne. I was told by a wine professional at my local wine store (they have specialists for various liquors come in every Friday night) that champagne is made with 3 grapes, 2 red and 1 white. The skin is taken off and thus the champagne comes out clear or rose'. This is why I can drink champagne and not white wine. It is mostly red grapes and I can drink red wine no problem.  It is the sulphites from the white grapes which are different than the sulphites in red grapes.

Last night I was at a champagne tasting. The first bottle was called a Chardonnay champagne...stupidly I tried it thinking what can a little taste do? Sure enough, 45 minutes after the taste, I was in excruciating pain for about an hour and my jaws were very sore once the cramping subsided. The server could not tell me if the chardonnay champagne had 2 red and 1 white chardonnay grape in it. I was curious if such a small amount triggered such a painful reaction. OR is chardonnay champagne an American champagne and not made by the 2:1 rule?

It would be nice to have a medical explanation for this crazy reaction.

I have had this all my life, occurs after wine or beer with dinner, about 1/2 hour after eating. Definitely feels like my salivary glands constricting.

Mine has also only happened once before now, and both times with frozen margaritas. Weird. It hurts very badly, and I have yet to find anything to work for it.

Not sure if anyone is still looking into this, but so glad I finally found a thread about it. I'm 33 and drink socially fairly often, and this only happens to me with white wine, and even then probably every 4th or 5th time I have some.

It just happened, and thanks to this thread I tried some juice out of one of those plastic lime dealies, and it seems to have worked. Like a painful gland release.

Good times!

I just had some red wine and sure enough I get this sharp shooting pain starting in my jaw and made me salivate a little. It went away quickly, but of course I had to test out the source of the pain with a couple more sips of wine ; ) I swished my mouth out with mouth wash to see if it was the alcohol causing the pain. And it wasn't. So, I take another sip, DUH I felt the pain again. Either this scar was from my bottom molar being pulled, or this is my wisdom tooth coming in where my molar was, but I saw some sort of mark and thought the alcohol was going into the cut and sending nerves all around the bottom of my jaw. Obviously I am not a dentist, just a random thought.

Glad to see I am not the only one with this issue, but it stinks to see that there is no real diagnosis or solution other than possible vitamin C gum.

Just a follow up from me...

For about 2 years now I've had this problem solved.  The "vitamin c trick" eventually turned into "anything sour" and that's been great for me.  If I'm at a bar and I get the jaw pain, I just ask for a lemon and suck on it and I get the "pop" followed by relief.  Sometimes I'll have to get another lemon because it only half-pops, but once I've popped it I'm good for the rest of the night.

I still have no idea what causes this, but there IS a solution, and I'm grateful to have found it... just wish that would have been 20 years ago!

I looked up this post because while I do get this pain sometimes - usually right after drinking something tart - I just came from the dentist where I was getting a cleaning. It happened while the hygienist was working on the very back of my mouth. It caused very intense pain and my salivary glands started working. I've had this maybe 20 times in my life and it's usually short-lived and related to drinking or eating something so it would seem it is related to those glands. This is the first time it's happened at the dentist - perhaps it was because my jaw was under pressure while she was poking around which stimulated the glands.
