I am almost 50. To varying degrees I have had this condition since I was a small child. I have it 90 % of time I eat acidic foods with alcohol. I get it less frequently and less severely without alcohol. I have had it to extremes I have had to leave meals in restaurants. I have just this minute had a burger and a bowl of cherries and a glass if wine. I have had to stop drinking the wine. The pain is borderline excruciating. It did not occur until after the cherries. I had it last night to same degree with chicken and pesto (and glass if wine). It's still hurting now half hour later but more as if someone has their thumbs pushed into jaw at back of ear as opposed to hot knitting needles. Even swallowing saliva at this point hurts. No idea what it is. No one else I know has it. As I say I can get it without alcohol, but any alcohol exacerbates it. I have not tried sycking a lemon or sour sweet. Frankly the thought of that pain scares me! I find antacids ease it marginally. But I usually just have to sit it out. I am ve4y long suffering with this and don't think I have come across anyone else on line or in the flesh or through hearsay who has it the same. Mind you I have not massively researched it. I just accept I am going to experience it, and feel pi***d off still everyone it does!

I am sad and happy i found this post. Sad because there seems to be no explanation for this and happy because this is the first time i have EVER found anything about this. I thought i was alone and my wife thinks im nuts. We even have a name for it, we call it "my shockies".
Im now 29 years old and have had this for as long as i can remember. Every time i havent eaten for a few hours the first bite of something, especially if its sweet, will send a painful shocking feeling to the muscles in my jaw but only for 3 seconds or so.
Then as with a lot of folks in here - when i eat and have alcohol it lasts 10 - 15 mins and is highly uncomfortable.
There has to be some answers out there people!!

Hi Matt,

I've been looking for an answer to this problem and was wondering if you've done any additional research. Unfortunately for me, vitamin C, chewing gum, sour stuff, nor anything else seems to give me the relief that works for other people. My symptoms can also last for HOURS. It's so agrivating.

After reading literally hundreds of posts made by others all over the internet, I've definitely noticed some commonalities and repeating patterns associated with it:

- Alcohol can trigger it, particularly beer and white wine
- Acidic fruit, yogurt, cider, and fermented products and trigger it
- Dehydration could contribute
- Not being properly rested could contribute

After my doctor told me that I'm nuts for the 20th time today, I'm on a rampage to figure this out.

Cheers,

Steve

I had this pain. I read these posts. Went to my fridge and grabbed a tiny orange. Peeled it. Ate it. After a one-second, big time pain on both sides- the Pain was instantly gone. Thank you Google!

Hi, i do suffer from this as well: it started few years back or at least that was when i hve noticed it. When i was on emigran/zomig (migraine med) 1st reaction was spasms in jaws right below the ears especially right side.
It happens with consumtion of food and alcohol it could be because the food is under "seafood" section or it has some spices

Holy c**p ive randomly had this for years and decided to Google it for the first time. Ran inside, drank some O.J., swished it around(which did hurt) and then it was gone! Thanks a bunch

The pain always occurs for me when I drink alcohol and water within short time periods of each other. You mentioned water with the Crown Royal experience. Do you have water with the sushi and Saki, too?

I've also noticed this problem over the last few years (I'm a 36 year old white male). At first it would only happen around 15 minutes after drinking a beer while eating food. It would not happen if I only drank a beer alone. Now it's starting to happen sometimes with slightly less intensity after only consuming food. Drinking orange juice or taking a vitamin C relieves the pain quickly.

I asked both a general practice doctor and ENT about this issue and both were puzzled.

I also have an issue with clenching my teeth while sleeping due to a stressful job and type A personality. I wonder how many of the comments here are coming from people who clench their teeth. This was also mentioned by the M.D. answer.

Candy and Mexican food set it off for me, the worst episodes I had recently (no alcohol) first bit of a soft chicken burrito, last night a piece of chewy candy. I'll try reaching for a lemon next time. Honestly, I do not rule out dehydration, drinking water has always been a low point for me.

Same thing happens to me! I’m 26 and it’s been occurring since I turned 21 and could legally have alcohol with meals. It happens with any combination of food and alcohol, and the only thing I’ve noticed makes it easier is if I make an effort to chew very slowly and gently. I’ll have to try the Vitamin C trick. Do any of the other sufferers of this grind their teeth in their sleep? I do, and I wear a mouth guard at night for it. I wonder if that has a connection. Never had salivary stones to my knowledge nor any allergies.

I have never been able to drink beer and eat pizza together at a meal because I get intense sharp pain in the corner of my jaw on both sides. This has been happening for over 30 years. I’ll try the vitamin C trick and see if it helps. Thanks for posting.

I periodically get a shooting pain in my jaw/ears after drinking a hoppy beer and have just dealt with it and dismissed it for a long time. Today I had an extremely painful shooting pain in my jaw after drinking a beer/eating. I found this page off google and CAN CONFIRM: VITAMIN C RELIEVES THE PAIN. All I could find with vitamin c was a multivitamin with 150% daily dose of Vitamin C. I chewed it up and a minute or two later the pain was gone.
