I have never spit out the mucus from a throat infections or cold. A friend told me that you are supposed to spit it out or you can re contaminate yourself. Is this true?

No, if it is a viral infection, the body is fighting the virus regardless. If bacterial, chances are the stomach acid will kill the cell. However, it is better to spit anyway, because the ingestion of mucous in the stomach can lead to nausea and vomiting.
