I had the same problem until my Dr put me on Nexium, now I can take the topamax. AS long as I take it with a LOT of water and wait a few hours before I eat. Also, pepto does noting but make it worse! I also found that if I drink some Cranberry/blueberry juice when my stomach is burning, it stops it! I KNOW that sounds really off the wall, but it works for me. AND if I have to take it late, before bedtime that is when it REALLY burns my stomach, IF I do that, I will eat a plain cheese sandwich nothing but american cheese and plain bread and that doesnt burn my stomach and seems to help keep it from burning. I hope this helps. BUT any antacids made mine 10 times worse.

It comes down to sugar causing the stomach pain. Topamax and sugar are not a good combination. I have been on it for a year and it took me several months to figure out that whenever I have anything that contains sugar I will have stomach pain and if the amount of sugar is alot, i.e. ice cream, I might even get diarrhea. The only thing that will reduce pain is fresh made LIME juice, not pepto, or anything else over the counter.

I just wanted to thank you. Long story short, I was a zombie for over six months, on my death bed. After someone suggested that it was the Topamax ruining my life, it all made sense. I even printed out your response to take with me. I honestly could have written you story. Thank you for sharing.

OMG!! i'm so glad I found this post. I've been using Topamax for 3 weeks now and just made it up to 75mg. The first week was tolarable but the last past 2 weeks have been unbearable. I don't know which is worse the headaches or the stomach aches. I've tried Zantac and Nexium and it hasn't work. And it just so happened that I also recently changed my eating habits so I thought I had eaten some bad greek yogurt or something until I read this post. I will try the cutting down on sugar thing and if that doesn't work I think I just might toss the topamax all together. My stomach aches all the times especially right after eating. I had gotten so bad that I stopped eating dinner and would just eat a banana for breakfast.

I'm glad I googled this topic and I hope it helps other people who are suffering.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE stay on top of this and talk to your doctor. It has been 4 months since I took my last Topamax, and the damage it did to my body is still hurting me. My lower left quadrant still throbs so bad that I've been to pain specialists, and have been essentially hooked on opiates just to make it through the day. I am no longer the mental zombie I was when I was on it, but the pain is still there. I was on it for 2 years before the side affects hit, but once the pain showed up, there was no turning back. It ruined my life, and I don't want it to ruin yours. If you want to talk more extensively, I am willing to share my info with you. This is no joke. Pleas, hun, talk to your doctor!! !

WHY would you take this drug for only weight loss??? it is an anti Seizure, anti Migraine drug. it is NOT a weightloss drug!

I am 50 lbs. heavier in 3 months...so I no longer get headaches but im fat, depressed and uncomfortable!

IDUNNO....I mean Im only 5" and used to be 90-95 average.....not sure whats worse???? Maybe a new med but then Im afraid that it wouldnt work...Im afraid either way. Any advised is would be appreciated. :-)

get off it I have been taking Topiramate for a year now about 3to 5 months in I started having bad pains in my stomach it took weeks for them to go away but now I suffer from diarrhea on a daily basis I'm done I'm going back to a medication with less to no side effects. I think if someone were to stay on this too long with these side effects they could end up in the ER or worse. I also have strange headaches I call floating headaches. They pop up from time to time and feel like they are between my brain and skull in different spots in my head. Lite

I was put on Topomax August 2011 & in October developed chronic diarrhoea. Was in hospital Dec 2011 & March 2012 & had colonoscopy & gastroscopy - both clear - and was finally told I probably had IBS or something worse. Nine months later I have lost 35 - 40 kg, have all the negative side-effects that Topomax gives and though I am migraine -free for the first time in 45 years I can't even get out and walk down to my local shops. This is not living. I have decided to talk to Dr about going off Topomax to see if I get better because I'd rather have the migraines. Seriously.

ive been on it for years in and out of the er. no help.doctor after doctor.topamax my newest doc says finally can have horrible side effects except i gained weight i cant keep anything down either dont get it

Ugg so confused!!! The topamax really really helps my migrains but I to have lost 57 lbs in a years and have devoloped intense pain on my right side and in my back. Sometimes the pain even shoots up my neck. I have had every test done known to man kind with all of them coming back that there is nothing wrong with me. (sure feels like there is something wrong). I have quit taking the topamax but am still having some (not as bad) pain. Dont know what to do :(

That's how I feel now! Exactly like your son! I've been taking it for about 4 months & am currently in severe pain after eating some Thanksgiving leftovers so thinking I may have to go to the ER !!
