Im wondering if anyone that responded a year ago with no pain or answers is still in that.. pain free without answers. I work in the OR on the spine team and get this noise quite frequently and am told its air.

I have just developed a similar occasional painless noise/sensation in the past month, with no trauma I'm aware of. It is located at a spot on my right side at the base of the skull (the occipital bone?) At first I thought my collar had grazed my skull. I would not describe it as a crackling so much, but I can simulate a similar sound if I block my ears tightly and lightly scrape a fingernail across hair against the bone. The sensation has a texture, as it were, like drawing your nail over a tweed jacket. I do not have any confidence that the doctor will not just laugh and be dismissive.

HEY!! IGOTBADNECK - STOP GIVING PEOPLE MEDICAL ADVISE & DIAGNOSIS OVER THE INTERNET! YOU ARE CLEARLY NOT... A DOCTOR. SOME OF THE THINGS YOU SAID ARE RIDICULOUS & YOUR ADVICE CAN BE DANGEROUS TO SOME PEOPLE! ESPECIALLY THE MAGNESIUM! THIS SHOULD ONLY BE TAKEN IF A DR ADVISES IT, NOT YOU! STOP THIS NONSENSE BEFORE YOU HURT SOMEONE! THIS IS JUST A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO SHARE WITH & SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER, NOT A PLACE FOR YOU TO PLAY DOCTOR. I AM HARSH BECAUSE I NEED TO BE. DO NOT EVER TELL PEOPLE YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW & HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR MEDS OR MED HISTORY, OR YOUR OWN MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THAT MATTER, WHAT TO DO OR WHAT TO TAKE. THAT IS CRAZY DANGEROUS! DO YOU WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE IF THEY TAKE MAGNESIUM AND HAVE A DYSRYTHMIA & DIE? STOP THIS NONSENSE IMMEDIATELY! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE SAYING AND WHAT THESE THINGS MEAN. IT IS JUST A BUNCH OF STUFF YOU LOOKED UP ON THE INTERNET. JEEZ... UNBELIEVEABLE.

First of all please take caps lock off as there is no need for it!
Secondly if you take time to read through the section at the bottom of the page in grey you would actually realise it says this site is for advisory purposes only and to seek medical advice, the person's podt you are referring to doesn't actually tell them to take stuff as you have said they do all they have done is advised and also advised of only taking the correct dose in other words as stated by a doctor!

also look into the energetic system (not physical biology) and specifically what they call kundalini rising / awakening.... look at the spiritual aspects of this

This sounds like it could be a spinal fluid leak.

Hi all. I've also been experiencing this sound sensation since August of last year after falling asleep on the couch. Woke up with a stiff neck followed by some neck grinding / popping. Gradually I started hearing this fizzing / sizzling sounds at the base of my back thinking it was from my neck. Got an X-Ray checked out thinking it could be a case of cervical spondylosis but x-ray shows my spine is normal. Went to see a physiotherapist and they conclude that it's likely to due to weak muscles and advised to do neck strengthening exercises. But now it seems like this fizzing / sizzling or pop rocks sounds you guys are describing seems to be coming from my back / right shoulder as oppose to my neck from where I initially thought it was. Only found that out when I was bending over and I hear that sound. But the other strange thing is if I straighten my back and bend over, that crackling sound doesn't occur. Also discovered that I can trigger that sound easily by shrugging my right shoulder backwards and also pushing my back forward / backward. Basically if I'm in a relaxed position and I move my back / shoulder, the fizzing sound can be produced. It still sound like it's coming from the back of my neck but I suspect that's because our ears are closest to that area which makes me initially think I'm hearing it from my neck.

Never had any trauma / whiplash besides just waking up from sleeping on the couch. Really have no clue what could be the case. Saw a couple of comments saying it's stress / anxiety related which I do have. No pain associated although I've been experiencing more headaches / lightheadedness ever since this happened but again, I'm not sure if it's related. Been to several doctors and so far have no real diagnosis nor solution. Might considering seeing a therapist and see if it's really anxiety related cause it's been a horrible couple of months constantly hearing the sound.

First, like so many of you, I am grateful to have found this string!   I was a very healthy 48-year old that prior to the Pandemic, went to the gym at 5:30 am every morning, ate a fairly healthy diet and was overall in great health (never took meds, and had a pretty healthy balanced life).  The first week of Jan 2021; however, I started feeling this sensation in my throat as if something was stuck/caught 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way down.  Initially I thought it was allergies, yet no allergy medicine did the trick.  Within about two weeks of detecting the "lump in the throat", the back of my head/skull (occipital and suboccipital) began to feel very tender/sore. Like I had hit my head on something, yet I never experienced an accident, or otherwise.   Within another week or two, I started experiencing massive crackling (pop rocks)..NOT typical crepitus, in the back of my lower head/skull and behind my ears.   In short, in 2021 I saw over 20 different doctors (saw more docs in 2021 than in my entire life), invested over $30k (and that's after insurance), and NOTHING has been diagnosed/detected.   I have had a CT scan on my throat, an MRI of my brain, had countless gastroenterologist tests (three ENT's thought it was GERD...NOT, as my gastroenterologist wrote a very lengthy letter to all 3 ENT's indicating that she ran every test under the sun and I have absolutely no acid reflux), and various blood work.   I have also visited many Western and Eastern medicine practitioners (changed diet, fasting, no alcohol, caffeine, etc.) .  You name, I have tried it as I was sooooo desperate to get "my old and healthy self back".   So, fast forward a year, I gave myself a "mental health break" over the holidays of 2021/2022 because frankly, I was both mentally and physically exhausted from dealing with all of this.   I am convinced that all three symptoms (lump in throat/crunching/tenderness in skull) are related.  I am so baffled as to what this might be, and the possibility of dealing with this for the rest of my life is almost too much  to bear.  Other things that MIGHT have caused my symptoms include having Covid19 in Nov 2020.  I also wore invisalign retainers (Smile Direct Club actually) and completed my year long treatment in Dec'20/Jan '21.  I mention this because I wonder if this could be TMD/TMJ related.  I have looked into the medial pterygoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles and think that these two ligament/muscles could also be the cause of a lot of my symptoms.  Lastly, I have poor posture/forward head tilt and the soreness in my skull/neck regions adds to my crocked neck/spine/head ligament.   My neurosurgeon said that I have one of the straightest necks he has ever seen, so I do what I can to keep as straight as possible, but still believe my head/neck/shoulders positioning is still very much out of whack.  I had been seeing chiropractors and physical therapists prior to taking my break going into 2022, with some relief, but nothing of any significance.   Again, I am thrilled to have found this site, and very hopeful that someone may have some advice for what steps I might want to consider next.  Thanks!  Tara

These symptoms, including the heavy head, is very typical of craniocervical instability (CCI). Docs aren't well educated in this, if they have even heard of it in the first place.

Accidents can cause it. It's more likely to be seen in patients with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome - another condition that most docs either don't know about or don't take seriously.

(I'm not a doctor, just a frustrated patient with ehlers danlos syndrome)
