I have this. It's caused by a herniated disk in my neck. It's the fragments of the disk that has herniated. Years of x rays showed nothing. It wasn't until an MRI after it got much worse and a CT with contrast. I had a diskectemy -removing only the herniated part and the sound went away. The disk herniated the rest of the way and the sound is back. It's worse now, not just when turning my head but also just the normal jostle you get when walking.

I've been experiencing a clicking/crackling sound in my skull right above and behind my left ear when I move, or tilt, my head upward. Aso while walking with my head tilted down. I've gone to a ENT, neurologist, neurosurgeon, chiropracter, and haven't gotten any answers. I had to quit exercising and it's annoying to even walk around, very depressing. If any one has an idea of what this is or who to see who can could provide a correct diagnosis, please let me know. Thank you.

Yes, almost like it's aggravating my sinuses. I don't know, once it gets going my whole face hurts. I find myself pressing on my gums on the outside of my mouth underneath my nose

Hey, thanks for the reply, sorry this is so late, but I don't use the hotmail that was linked to this question very often. No, that's not what I felt, whatever was up with me seems to be gone. It stopped after a week or two.

I had my surgery done in 3/2011, I still have issues, but I refuse to go under the knife again. So I try and maintain what I can. I live in a state where MMJ is legal, so I eat MMJ and it works great on the pain;

I have this crackling also. I did TRX when I was overweight - they said oh you can't hurt yourself  it's your own body weight at a Clubsport in CA.  It began above my breat bone I thought it was muscle but a masseuse told me it was hard & it was just rock messed up mass that had to be worked on so I bought this cane looking thing on amazon to break it down & use a mini-roller, tennis ball. Went to a chiro for awhile got too expensive. Am self employed so not covered. However this was 2 years ago, since then it progressed to my head & neck crack & basically all over crack. I do zumba & have this cracking sound. I am 60 but nothing really hurts too much. Just seems like my bodyis adjusting however in the last 2 months my head started hurting & I have knots in my head not (not hair, people say brush your hair LOL)  Ipress on them & they are tiny I feel they are in veins. It's scary since we have stroke history in family. Going to Kaiser for physical.  Oh  my back cracks and all that. it seems kind of common when I talk to people the back & neck but the head thing..I am a single & stressed about money lately working a lot, relationship issues - where is life going should I move you know that kind of thing so it could many things. Crossroads empty nest moving on to what? Etc or physical Glad I found this blog Does anyone have head tiny knots? I woke just now scared. I wake up with panic attacks at times related to relationship I am in so that is oh joy . In it or out of it plus my best friend is dying, my immediate family is gone but I have children nearby but of course they have their lives and i am happy for them. who wants to be a downer which is what it sounds like to people when they are young who don't know better (yet) I remember those days of telling older people have fun, get a life..now you learn later that sometimes life has it's ups and downs which we all go through no matter what This is minor of course compared to other things but you start thinking when you live alone. Knots anyone, seems like they are on the veins and the head crackles. The crackles are spreading and also at times my right only gets bloodshot after exertion but have been told that's normal. What about slightly numb lips? Could this be dehydration, not drinkng enough water?

This is very common in Degenerative Disc Disease. I suggest you bring it up to your doctor and get an MRI. If it's not painful though then it's not a problem. Lots of people have DDD with no pain for many years.

I had radiation therapy for Hodgkin's 27 yrs ago and now have radiation fibrosis syndrome. With me, the clicking sound started 5 yrs. ago, just slightly at first. Now it is out of hand. My clicking emanates from the ligaments that anchor the muscles that go up and over the skull. They are fibrotic, "dried out" or not sliding over itself as it should. At least I have a reason for the clicking. I do think it might be your ligaments at the base of your skull.

I am having the same exact thing. It happens randomly and it sounds like sand/gravel going down my skull in my neck. It happens when I'm laying in bed or if I'm just sitting up. It always happens when Im sitting stil though!
