My 3 month old had a bowel movement yesterday and had a stringlike white substance in it. Is this any cause for alarm?

Did this happen just that one time or has it been happening afterwards? I don't want to overly concern you, but if this has happened more than once, than there might be a good reason for you to see a pediatrician. In most cases it's just the diet and the baby's developing digestive system that is causing all sorts of "strange happenings" with stool, but sometimes there might be a more serious situation that causes baby's inability to digest the food properly. It could be lactose intolerance or, depending on whether you are breastfeeding or using the formula, celiac disease (even though the latter is not very likely to show signs so early). So, depending on if this is happening again or not - see the doctor.

Bring a stool sample to your baby's doctor. It sounds like worms, which are common, but way gross. There are plenty of antihelminthic drugs out there that are safe for pediatric use.
