is happening to me also, and as long as i am not the only one, i guess it's ok. am 47 years old and has been happening off and on for 10 years. this is the worst now as it has been non stop for 6 days now.

only thing i could find out was it is likely "occipital neuralgia."

good times.

i get the same thing nearly everyday, and just then i had a bad one that lasted 20 seconds. not to scare anyone but i did have a serious brain injury (hemorrhage) a few years back and i assume thats why i get this. i think anyone else who gets them this regularly should get themselves checked out!

I am 15, and for the past 3 years have been having these sorts of pains occasionally. THEYRE SO ANNOYING. For me, they're always on the right side at the base of my head/top of my neck and its really intense pain. This morning I had one that was so bad it caused me to curl up on the ground. They last max. of 5 seconds, but after it feels like the pain is still 'echoing'.

i have been having the same feeling for a few days now and it got so intense i phoned the nhs...they diagnosed me as a 'simple head cold'. it doesnt feel right still and pain relief doesnt help but just so people dont get to concerne apparently it's 'only a head cold'

I have had the same, ive been having mine since i can remember, around 6 years of age maybe even younger, and ive always been curious as to what it may be. ive been to the doctor many times in the past but hes pretty rubbish and didnt seem concerned. they also make me grab my head like what everyone else is saying. I sharp shotting pain sort of like being stabbed, it started in the right side but now im experiencing it in the left aswell, it used to happen very often and not as painful, and has gradually got to happening less often, yet much more painful. ive also started experiencing soemthing new in the past year or so, ive started noticing that i am getting cold spots that seem to form at the top of my head and run down over my whole head with a cold sort of freezing sensation. i really hope i can find out something it oculd be as my doctor cant seem to diagnose it or just cant be bothered.  thanks :)

I also have been having shooting pains in the back of my head, they are horrible they started six months ago.  They fee like contractions as well anthey last a few seconds and then they stop.  And they carry on during the day intermittently.  >I have good weeks were i have it for 2-3 days and they i am fine and some weeks it lasts all week, like this week.. It also happens when i am sleeping.  Sometimes it ends up pressing after the shooting pain has gone all over my head..  I went to GP and he decided they were migraines so iam being treated with pizotifen 1.5mg on for prophylaxis, but it has not helped, they pain is less strong than without the tablets but still there and often, also sometimes i take ibuprofen and paracetamol and it makes no difference.  I somethimes think it could be related to my back because i have scoliosis, but not sure because my back has never given me problems.  I am due to go back to GP next week so we will see wether he sends me for a CT head.

I have had the same pain. Years ago I had them on the left side. Had an MRI done that showed lesions and small vessel damage. As of the last few months I am now having them on the right. I also have migraines and the pain is very different. Doctors disnt seem to want to be any more specific back then. Do they grow, move, does vessel damage spread? So I just try to exist with them. Very scary though.

Hey guys I have read all your posts and I suffered from the same headaches. I was always scared and lived at the doctor's and hospitals. After many CT Scans and MRI's...doctors always told me I was fine. I was frustrated and scared because the pain was there on and off.  Well after doing my own research I found that I suffered from jaw tightening. Its not TMJ but what I found out is that all your head, neck and shoulder muscles are connected.  When you tighten you jaw, even if you dont notice it, you are tightening all the muscles around your head, neck and shoulders.
So what you can do is this and IT REALLY WORKS TRY IT!!!
You have to spend at least 1 hour every day with your mouth WIDE open. I mean really open.  You will release the tension in your jaw muscles which in turn release tension all around your head.  I promise this works.
Please let me know how it goes....good luck

I THINK THIS WORKS....
I also get those scary, painful, minute long headaches. After CT scans, MRI's and doctors telling me there is nothing wrong. I began my own research. Turns out your head, neck and shoulder muscles are all connected this including your jaw muscles. Tension and tightening of your jaw muscles can create tightening of all your other head, neck and shoulder muscles. Therefore, you have to release the tension in your jaw. Its not TMJ just tension there.
TRY THIS IT WORKED FOR ME....
You have to keep your mouth WIDE open for 1 hour each day. I mean WIDE open. This will release the tension in your jaw muscles and head muscles. The pain goes away.....it really works.....good luck

I have been having them for 5 years now. Mine start at the back of my head and shoot upward, very fast, very sharp like an intense electrical shock. They last a second or two, but i scream and freeze immediatey still when it happens. Scares me too. They started from happening twice/year to once/week. I was recently diagnosed with cervicalgia, cervical spondylosis, bulging discs c4-7, and degenerative disc disease. I am only 32. I now have severe pain daily in my neck, shoulder/traps, middle traps (between shoulder blades), and radiates through left arm. I don't know if they relate to eachother but just my 2 cents. By the way, my shooting pain occurs when I turn my head suddenly but not sure exactly how I'm doing it to pinpoint my exact position.

I have for the past year been having these similar pains in the left top of my head toward the back. It is instant and feels like a million needles that has been shot into my head. It scares the c**p out of me too and hurts like heck.  My Dr. said it was probably just nerves, which I didn' like her answer at the time, but maybe she was right, after reading everyones posts I feel a little relieved that maybe I'm not going to have a stroke or something. I hadn't had one for about two months until last night during my sleep it hit me again, woke me out of a dead sleep. When I yelled I woke my husband up also. I have found that if I just lightly scratch the whole area its helps alot. Maybe this would help someone else. Also I have been going to a chriopractor, he took xrays of my back and neck, and clearly shows that my head is not in alignment with my spine. Good luck to everyone and hope this goes away for all of us.
