This very thing has been happening to me for about four years, off and on with no apparent trigger.  It happened to me at the dentist's office one day and as I explained it to her and the staff (who'd come in for a look), they offered lots of suggestions, but nothing definative.  One mentioned MSG as a possible cause and we agreed that I'd read up on MSG and read labels carefully on ALL foods, and ask at restaurants if their food contained any MSG.  I do believe we've found the culprit!!  When I do not eat processed foods, or am very diligent at which ones I do consume, I do not get the swollen spots.  If I eat what someone else has cooked (esp. a casserole), or get lazy and buy something processed, then I will get them.  Restaurants aren't so bad, as I usually try to stick with fresh veggies and no condiments.   Here is a link to a chart of additives that contain, or potentially contain, MSG:   ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

I've also noticed I simply feel better all around when I don't eat processed foods, and I've completely eliminated diet sodas from my diet.  Don't want to preach, but we have to be diligent at taking care of our own health.  The food manufacturers, medical establishment, and even our governments are too tied to the cash, and don't care what happens to us (with the exception of my dentist).  And remember, just because something such as MSG is "natural" doesn't mean it's safe.  All mushrooms are natural, some are deadly.  Wishing everyone good health and good luck!

This posting seems to have lots of activity.  I too have suffered from unexplained swelling from time to time.  It started about six years ago on the bottom of my feet and like someone else explained it it feels as if you are walking on top of a packet of ketchup.  However, more recently it has become more prevalent more frequent and in different parts of the body; just this morning I woke up with a new one, lets just say that is like sitting on top of a packet of ketchup.  I have just started to do some research but do not have many answers yet.  I did come across a interesting website as far as I can tell they have nothing for sale just information but will not post the address because it is not allowed.  Simply search for lymphedema.  I am curious what others say about this.

This is kind of scary. Lip is huge! Haven't eaten anything different but I'm nervous driving an hour to work in case it goes into my throat or something. Now that I think of it I also get unexplained itching episodes that seem more like bites but they come and go within a half hour or so. I hope this is the same because it is so big it feels like it is going to split right open. Amazing all the same symptoms people have an no answers yet.

I have been doing some research and would like to know if any one has seen a doctor that has excluded the following.  I have some good medical resources and according to them this is Edema related to the lymphatic system.  Edema can happen as a result of an adverse reaction to a medication, stress (yeah as in psychotic), lymphatic system issues, coronary heart condition, kidney and liver disease.  It seems to me that any health care physician would need to do blood work, urine work and so on in order to properly diagnose this condition.  As I type my right foot is in pain and I can't hardly walk.  I also got very itchy last night.

Is no use posting and avoiding tackling this thing head on.  Last night I spoke with my brother that has a master in physical therapy and homeopathy and in spite of dislike to medical doctors he recommended me to contact one.  Just thought I share this.

You should visit a doctor or the very least a health center. My research shows that this could be underlining kidney, liver, heart disease. I am making arrangements to see a doctor soon and then visiting my regular doctor in January. Your symptoms are accompanied by other symptoms which should be taken seriously. Don't mean to scare you just being honest with you.

I also have had many of the same symptoms/experiences described in these posts. Good advice to see a doctor to exclude any liver, kidney, heart issues. Unfortunately, I too can't help with any diagnosis but I will tell what is working for me: 800 - 1000 mg. of curcumin mixed with yogurt works great to reduce tongue and "inner" lip swelling. I roll it around in my mouth and let it set there a couple minutes before swallowing. Many times I have had good results within an hour. Eat something first if you have stomach issues with spices. Also look for the type of curcumin that is more "bio available".

Stress reduction has also helped a lot. Unfortunately its hard to do sometimes in the world we are living in but its worth the effort.

It's an allergic reaction.  Any swelling is dangerous.  I had all those symptoms and for me it was a reaction to NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs i.e. advil, asprin etc.)  It is very serious and can come on suddenly.  It's scary to think that something as 'harmless' as Advil can put your life at risk but such is the case with me.  Stop taking them immediately.  I stopped and have never had a reaction until recently as I've been taking Tylenol cold and flu and my wrist has swollen up but nothing as scary as the HUGE lip I had with Advil.  Hope this helps!

I feel like I walk on marbles too, my hands and between my fingers start out itchy, and then they get red and swollen. Then that goes away and then my lip either (mostly top) bottom feels itchy and then starts swelling up like CRAZY big. Have no idea what it's from but it's really scary. I'd love a reply back too if you or someone else knows any kind of reason this would just start to happen. Im not allergic to anything every, and I'm 28 years old. Thank you very much.

I have had the same symptoms: my heel, my feet, my lip, my wrists in the past month. In all cases itches, then swells then subsides. It must either be a virus, an allergy or a possible organ like kidney or liver malfunctioning. If you find out what it is  ***this post is edited by

My right index finger began to swell unexpectedly and right foot began to swell also. I am not sure if I am on to something, but I own an older house that I used to rent. My first tenant stayed there for many years and had trouble with her extremities swelling. She was an older lady and said that it was common, she used to swell all the time because she had gout. The second tenant moved in and she had swelling in her feet, but she told me she has always had swelling and that was part of her disability. I was over working in the house a couple days ago to get ready to move back in and noticed swelling in my index finger. Today, all of my fingers are swollen and one of my feet after spending about 4 hours in the house. I am not sure if there is some undiscovered mold or other harmful agent causing the swelling, but I am going to have the house safety inspected to be sure. Just a thought, did you recently move or make changes to your current residence?

My 16 year old son is experiencing similar symptoms. It started with hives for the first couple of months. Then moved to facial swelling. He's going to a holistic doctor/chiropractor that has diagnosed him with high yeast in his body. He's been eliminating yeast products for about 2 months and things have improved, but not gone away. He had another bad episode today - worst ever. that's how I found this site. My wife is a nurse practitioner, so he has a medical professional watching his almost every move and it's still happening. And yes, frustrating and scary. Strangely, we have other friends who've had the symptoms, went to the same doctor and was told they had high yeast. And by eliminating yeast, the problem eventually went away - some faster than others. So there is some evidence that it is a potential cause. We will continue eliminating yeast, but are still looking for other possible answers.

I have all of the symptoms mentioned in the earlier posts for the past few years: swelling, burning and itching of feet and hands, swelling of lips and tongue. It began after many years of using (abusing) antibiotics to fight sinusitis. My research indicates that these symptoms are indicative of Candida. Candida Albicans is an opportunistic fungus (or form of yeast) that is the cause of many undesirable symptoms ranging from fatigue and weight gain, to joint pain and gas.The Candida yeast is a part of the gut flora, a group of microorganisms that live in your mouth and intestine. When the Candida population starts getting out of control it weakens the intestinal wall, penetrating through into the bloodstream and spreading throughout the body.As it spreads it produces toxic by-products that cause damage to your body tissues and organs, wreaking havoc on your immune system.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

Like many of the earlier posts I went to my allergist and he performed many tests without identifying the problem. He was as puzzled as I was and one time I visited him, my lip was swollen so he go to see a symptom first hand. He thought that the Candida diagnosis might have some merit. However, I wasn't aware of the Candida diet until recently. I've just started it and will let you know if it works.

I too am having the same symptoms. Have gone to an allergist and had full tests done. One marker showed out of range but all allergy tests came back negative. In the meantime I am on Zyrtec as well, but after being on it for 10 days had a massive nosebleed and irregular heartbeat. I don't do well with antihistamines. I also live in NYC. Could you provide the name of the top specialists in the world for these conditions? I would like to get a second and third opinion.....Thank you so much
