I'm so glad I'm not alone with this. Since January this year I have had various swellings. It started with my feet where I would feel pain and an intch and then it would swell, this could be anywhere on either foot at anytime. Literally feels like you are walking on a golf ball or something. I went to the doctors and they told me to wear insoles. A Week later it happend to my hands very painful swollen fingers and pain in my wrist. I went back so the doctor did some blood tests which all came back nornal. The doctor then sent me for some xrays on my hands thinking it might be arthritus. These showed nothing also. I now have swellings almost everyday either on my body, (torso, legs or bottom) and feet or hands. It seems to be worse in the mornings with my hands. This morning when I woke up my bottom lip was swollen. I am starting to think it must be an allergic reaction to something but am struggling to find out what. I am baffled but it is starting to get me down. Always worry that it might be something more serious.

its caused by angioedema. I have the same issues and thats what my allergist diagnosed me with after about a year. Its not harmful unless it occurs in your throat. Benedryl will help the swelling go down the quickest. You can also take zertec to help prevent it. What causes mine is pressure for long amounts of time on a particular area (sometimes just from sleeping wrong). Its more annoying then harmful though.

Wow, this has been happening to me over years now. I've chalked it up to 1st signs of arthritis when it effected my fingers (you know - that getting older thing that happens to everyone) but couldn't explain the lip, sides of hands(wrists) and feet, especially when it occurred on the bottom of them. I too thought it could be stress related, I'm a pretty chilled person, but our bodies do their own thing sometimes without consulting us. Things would swell, wait anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days and it would disappear. Ahh the power of stress. At least, I related all of it to stress since there wasn't anything else I could contribute it to.
The last two big bouts have come when I've had a small occurrous of diverticulitis episodes. The 1st happened when I was taking meds (antibotics) and started to swell in my right hand, then my left foot, then my bottom lip. Of course, I attributed it to the type of antibotic. Immediately stopped taking it, pain from diverticulitus or not, took benedryl (that just put my to sleep) and after 3 days off from work and lots of yogurt and water, I was much better. That was back in March. Just 2 days ago, now that school is out (I'm a teacher;-) - no stress there!), I started having a small diverticulitis episode again (off my regular eating routine - yogurt everyday, lots of raw veggies, you know the healthy eating pattern), and with it comes all these swelling issues. I did not take any antibotics this time, so I can rule out the bad reaction to meds. Benedryl again did nothing but make me sleeping. But I did increase lots of yogurt and water (even watermelon - it's hot here in Texas and watermelon increases the water intake a lot) plus I wanted to help flush out my system to deal with the diverticulitis thing.
What I'm wondering about is the theory of having bad stuff leaking into our blood system. My case - flare up of diverticulitis, others could be from something consumed or stress related, maybe a combination of all, and the angioedema is our body's way of dealing with it.
I read the reply about the candida (too much yeast in the system) and it started me thinking about my own relation to this swelling issue. It's just amazing to me that in this day and age we have come along way in technology and science; we know a lot about our bodies, but we still have areas that we don't have answers to. But it's comforting to be able to come to blogs, like this one, to know that we aren't alone and can reach out for answers even if there's no cure. Thanks to everyone for helping me understand that it's just not me this is happening to.

This is going to sound strange! For the last couple of years I have been having these "flares" that an explanation cannot be given for. The first time it happened it was on my lip. I felt an itch on my upper right lip and within 5 minutes it started to swell. The swelling actually extended out to my cheek. It kind of felt numb, but not completely. It was huge...literally! After about 4 hours it started to go down. The next morning it was totally gone. This was not a cold sore, I've had those. There was no sore. It itched and was swollen...that's it. The next thing to happen was on my foot. The bottom of my foot suddenly started to itch, so naturally I scratched. I then felt like something was stuck to the bottom of my sock, because I could feel that I was walking on something, only there was nothing there. I almost felt like a marble. I took my sock off and found nothing except that my foot was swollen, itching, painful and was sort of pink. The third thing that happens, and the mot painful, is the underside of my wrists. The same exact thing happens...pinkness, itching and pain, mostly burning. I have tried to put all of this on food, detergent, allergies, etc..There s no pattern. A flare could last for 2 hours or 2 days! My doctor says he doesn't know what it is, its not dangerous, an dont worry. Well, I AM!!! I would love to hear back from someone that has experienced this or anyone that knows what this is.
I am experiencing the 'walking on a marble' sensation around the ball of my right foot. This has happened several times, same foot, in the last 6 months. Also, I had small area swelling on heel of both feet. First, itching; then swelling. Usually this all comes and goes in 48 hours. I have also had swelling of 1st and 2nd joint of middle finger of right hand.
This past weekend, Sat pm experienced itching then slight swelling in small upper right area of right heel. After 12 hours swelling and itching subsided. Last night, the the first joint of my ring finger swelled. I felt the swelling coming and I removed my wedding band. This morning the swelling is slowly subsiding. I am baffled about these symptoms and looking for answers.

I have also experienced these symptoms for about 6 years. Like most people who have experienced the symptoms have gone through all the regular testing (blood work, allergy testing (pin pricks, blood testing, etc) and all comes back negative.
Here are the things that I have found have worked to manage the symptoms for me. Although all food testing comes back negative, I find eliminating wheat, dairy, alcohol and eggs from my diet(try to stay on a candida diet) minimiziing stress (deep breathing, relaxation tech) and exercising daily (keep the body moving to stimulate blood flow), and using sauna (sweat to rid the body of toxins).
I have been on numerous supplements from naturapaths, but I am not sure if they do much. Now I take a vitamin b complex, zinc (i was tested and was low), Vit D (in the winter as I was tested and low), and liver detox drops). I also found the antihistamines do not help one way or the other
I find that I can eat the foods I mentioned above occasionally (1x/week or every 2 weeks), but when I do fequently 2-4x/week I get the symptoms. I can go several months without symptoms and then I find with cheating on the diet the symptoms come back, but they are usually mild in comparison to 4-5 years ago (they would happen daily, was nauseated daily etc).
When my feet or hands swell I use hot/cold contrast. You can try having 2 bowls of water one as hot as you can tolerate and one as cold as you can tolerate and then put your hand/foot into one then the other for as long as you can tolerate (it helps for me)
I have a another appointment with a different allergist in December 2012 and will see what they have to say.
