You have a fungal infection in your sinus. I had it and had surgery to have my sinuses scraped. The thing is you can't totally get rid of it in the sinus. .here we are 2yr ago I had it and again now. Try a sinus massage.It felt like I only had a little bit of congestion, but a bad taste would build up everyday and I didn't know what was causing if. I saw a Dr. and he didn't know either. I see this post is old but I am going to reply in the hope it helps someone else searching for a solution to this problem.
This first happened to me around ten years ago and nothing seemed to help. I did sinus flushes, antibiotics, everything mentioned in these type of posts all to no avail.My doctor finally suggested acidophilus milk. Within a week it was gone. About 4 days ago I noticed that old familiar smell and taste coming back. It took me a couple days to get to the store and the smell worsened constantly. I went to the grocery store and got the milk at 10pm on Monday night and when I woke up Tuesday it was better but still there. Today is now Wednesday ( evening) and the smell and taste is almost completely gone.
I hope this helps someone out there as I know how bad and embarrassing this problem can be.

I have had this exact same thing for about a year. It comes and goes, as others said, when I scoff or sniff or sometimes just randomly. When it comes, it lasts anywhere from hour to the rest of the day. My boyfriend says that it does not affect my breath at all. I have one additional twist that no one else has mentioned, I have determined that it is coming exclusively on one side of my nose. I can tell because when it happens, if I block my right nostril, it instantly goes away, and as soon as I unblock it, it immediately comes back, even if I don't inhale. I also frequently have congestion only on that side of my nose. I've had 2 rounds of antibiotics, 2 different ENTs looking in my nose, a CAT scan of my sinuses, daily nasal spray (generic flonase), and use a neti pot almost every day, all to no avail. It is not a dental problem either. It's ruining my quality of life because I live for food and wine. The doctors act like it's all in your head! There are tons of boards like this with people like us who all have this problem, and none of them has an actual diagnosis. How is it possible that no one has found the cause?
