I have just been diagnoised with Thalassemia. I am 48 years old. and have suffered with chronis anemia all my life. I am suppose to see a specialist very soon. Some of my symptoms are severe hair loss, fatigue, hypothyroidism, & uterine fibroid tumors. Are these conditions part of Thalassemia? If I was treated correctly as a child could I have avoided these problems?

Hello, I know something about this. Thalassemia, also know as "Cooley's anemia", is an inherited disease of the red blood cells, classified as a hemoglobinopathy. You will need blood transfusions. You have some immunity against malaria with this disease. If you are not a heavy case of this condition then your blood transfusions will not be that often. That is everything I know about this disease.
