I am a 31 yo male and I had my tonsils and adenoids out 6 days ago, and to be honest it's horrible. The surgery and hospital portion of the process was very easy, show up, change, get a little prick to start an IV, sleep, wake up with a numb throat, feel funny from the goofy gas, eat apple juice/ice chips, go home and sleep. Day 2, feel decent, push the limit a little on what you can eat/drink, while the steroid and local continue to work. Day 3, for me is when all hell broke loose. THe steroid wore off after my mid morning nap and I knew something was up, my head started to throb, I tried to take a sip of water and cold not swallow, I looked into the mirror and saw a white face with purple ears. I called in and of course they had me come in asap for fluids and some drugs...I wish I could have just stayed there for the next three days! =)
So after another round of decadrone, morphine, 2 bags of fluid, and a antibiotic, I was all set to go home...why didn't i stay? I was surprised that I actually got 2 bags of fluid since I had been on top of my liquid consumption but what can ya do.
Day 4 was pretty decent and I was doing well until about half way thru day 5 and I napped for about an hour. Same old wonderful feeling was back, there's really little you can do either. I start by drinking some ice chips and water to calm the swelling down so I can take my meds. Try as hard as I can to get some yogurt/applesauce in me so I do not get upset stomach with a ton of pain. So getting up every 4 hours for meds usually means I'm up for at least an hour since I'm in so much pain. I was prescribed oxycodone which helps but takes a little while to kick in. anyways, the truth is that the surgery is easy...from getting to the hospital until day 3ish. After that buckle up for pain and being uncomfortable, and probably as uncomfortable and in pain you'll ever have been in. I am 6'3" 230lbs and this can take me down no problem. I took off 1 full week from work in which i had surgery on a monday, which I would recommend since the doctor will be open the whole rest of the week, in case you need help getting more comfortable afterward. Then I am working from home the following week.
Wow, that's upbeat huh? sorry to be debbie downer but I think that helped me more than it will you, just to vent! best of luck to you all and I hope that you can prove me wrong with your experience and it goes much better for you. Take care and God bless.
