I have been having the same problem except I have gel nails. Its very itchy an I now have little bumps around my cuticles. The only thing I have found that soothes it a little bit is washing my hands in dawn dish liquid.

I dont think its the uv light as it helps with any skin irritation, you may be allergic to nail product, as i am also, and i have nail psorasis, not fun! i get my nails professionally done with non acrylic liquid. Hope this helps...

I am absolutely certain it has nothing to do with cheap products or contact dermatitis - The reason I can be so sure of this is that I do my own nails from home. I have never done anyone else's nails - I would not know how too, so it is not a cross contamination problem. I was also half way through the normal product that I had been using every time I do my nails - so a new product being used is also ruled out.
I am thinking it is more along the lines of some type of allergy or intolerance our body develops in relation to the chemicals, I am only guessing, but that is what I have come up with.
The same thing happened to one of my girlfriends - Funny thing is - we both have the same problems with our bodies. Both of us have had gallbladder issues as a result of a dairy allergy. I have no idea if this is linked - but it is definitely a problem both of us have developed before having the itchy horrid rash problem with our nails. I just wonder if other intolerances in our bodies are making us more cerceptable to this weird little acrylic problem. As said - I am just guessing - but it would be interesting to hear if anyone else has food allergies or other unrelated intolerances.

Wow, an interesting forum to stumble onto. I goggled my symptoms and here you guys are! I thought I was having a stress reaction at first due to a job change, etc. That possibly I was just picking at my cuticles making them worse. But I could never explain away the itchy swollen reaction.

They look awful so I'm clueless as to what is causing this. I have been going to the same nail tech for 13 years with no problem. The past couple of times I've gone this has happened. I use the pink and white powder with the primer but never use the UV dryer. I wear a French manicure so she normally just buffs out my nails and I leave.

But within a week,my cuticles start itching, puffing up and turning red. The skin underneath my nails turns tough and starts peeling away along with the skin on the sides of my nails. It's disgusting. Again, I thought this was stress related until I stumbled onto this forum.

I'd love to know what the heck is out there in the market that is causing so many of us this misery!! I know I won't give up my nails because my real nails are more disgusting than the peeling skin. (I think?!?!)

When my nails are done with gelish or jessica polish, they have itched, but the Shellac seem to be ok.

It must be something that is used in the glish and jessica.

Formaldehyde and toluene is the problem... Go to gelcolour or shellac. Buy hypoallgenic polishes. Good luck

I absolutely think and agree with the UV light having a negative effect. I started using a new salon & they were right into the whole finishing me off with "multiple dips" under the UV light. Each time I experienced a tingling almost like I was being "cooked" sensation & left each time over the last 6 weeks experiencing a burning, itching & painful sensation in most of the skin all around my finger tips. I have had acrylic nails done on & off for over 20 years & have finally come to the conclusion this is no longer for me, however not sure if it's just the UV light thing or an allergic reaction to acrylic???

I just got gel nails not long ago today and they are itching like crazy! Don't do it! Also, they hurt but maybe it's just the shitty place I got it done at, although you would kindve expect them to be alright for $60 but not this place

Hi girls, I am a qualified nail tech of 17yrs, just a question is anyone using nail polishes and top coats.?? If so, some brands have formaldehyde and toluene which some people are slightly or severely allergic too. Any question feel free too ask. ;)

I also get the same reaction, I thought it was acetone at first, then one day I did not use acetone only the UV light, I could scratch my fingers off, I tried a cotton pair of gloves and I cut out the part where my nails are, it is not so bad but I keep trying different things, as I use shellac on my nails and I also have to use the UV lamp, I have also been told to put sun tan cream on my hands, if you know of any other remedy please post. I just keep trying as my nails are soft if I don't use the shellac. :(

Gallbladder could also be due to birth control. It's becoming a huge problem among women lately (including myself). You and your friend should look into it if you haven't already.

I totally agree. I have been using acrylic fills for over 21 years, and have only now developed contact dermatitis. Will be switching to wraps next weekend. For the record, I have been going to the same A list salon for the ladt 22 years.

Same problem here after YEARS of having them professionlly done with every technique known.  I too then bought the gel system, same problem.  Finally I just starting applying the gel products to tips of my nails only and this seems to work at least with helping me grow my brittle nails longer.  Yes, I have a ridge where the gel products start and end but it's better than nothing I think.  I have researched this and once you have the allergy, you will always have the allergy and the procedure/products all salons use are made of the same chemicals.  So girls, it looks like another beauty product is on the do-not-use list.  Why can't I be sensitive to junk food instead????
